Cooling System Chapter 5

5. COOLING SYSTEM
The analytical table is cooled by a closed circuit of circulating liquid.

The water pump is simply powered at 230 VAC by the WATER PUMP switch located on the distribution
panel at the rear of the instrument. Two versions are available, one for 50 Hz supply and another one for 60
Hz supply.

In case of a motor breakdown, the complete module must be exchanged.

5.1 Maintenance and Water Filling Procedure

There are two models of water pumps:
♦ Small pump, tank diameter of about 95 mm, supplied with instruments delivered up to approximately
October 2000.
♦ Large pump, tank diameter of about 140 mm, supplied with instruments delivered after approximately
October 2000.

Check the operation of the water cooling circuit. Check there is no water leaks at fittings. If the water be-
comes trouble, or if pipes are dirty (seaweed, etc.), the circuit must be purged and pipes must be replaced.

Check the water level, and if necessary top up with demineralised water.
♦ Small pump (Ø 95 mm), the level must be approximately to 3/4 of the tank capacity.
♦ Large pump, (Ø 140 mm), the level must be approximately to 2/3 of the tank capacity.

In case of purge or full water circuit replacement, follow the filling up procedure below:

1. Remove the water pump from its support

2. Switch the Water Pump breaker to Off.
3. Put the device upside down, the motor on top.
4. Release the clamps of the motor assembly and fill up the tank with 2 litres (large pump, Ø 140 mm) or 1
litre (small pump, Ø 95 mm) of demineralised water.
5. Put back the motor and close the clamps so that the water input and output stay approximately on the
same axis.
6. Switch the Water Pump breaker to On.
7. Leave the pump running for a couple of minutes. It will be most probably necessary to raise up the pump
to the stand's height in order to ease the starting of the water circulation!
8. Check there is no water leaks.
9. If OK, stop the device by switching the Water Pump breaker to Off.
10. Put the device upside down, the motor on top.
11. Release the clamps of the motor assembly and top up the tank with 5 dl (large pump, Ø 140 mm) or 2½
dl (small pump, Ø 95 mm) of cooling liquid. Use only the cooling liquid supplied by Thermo Electron
(P/N AA25631, 1 litre).
12. Put back the motor and close the clamps so that the water input and output stay approximately on the
same axis.
13. Switch the Water Pump breaker to On.
14. Fix the pump on its support.
