Excitation (Hi-RepII Source and MBS201 Stand) Chapter 3

3.2 MBS201 Stand

Electrical diagram: see S111734 Interconnection

Mechanical drawing: S010705

List of components: S426464

The sparking is made under an argon atmosphere environment in order to prevent the analysis sample's
surface from oxidation.

A closed water cooling circuit maintains the temperature of the table and the sample at an acceptable stable
level.

3.2.1 Electrical Part

The electrical part of the stand itself is shown at the right of the S111734 diagram.

There are two valves:

♦ The SHUTTER valve that should only opens during the integration time.
♦ The ARGON valve that works during the entire analysis cycle, so as to set the analytical argon flow
(about 4 litre per minute).

A high integrity safety system (according to CEI 1010 standard) breaks the power relay (ON/OFF) of the
source through the VDE SAFETY contact of the stand's door. When the door is closed, the mains is present
and the power relay is supplied.

3.2.2 Mechanical Part

The S010705 drawing and its corresponding part list S426464 indicate all mechanical components of the
stand enclosure. Some of these components are not available as spare parts, but only the sub-assembly whose
components are part of.

The table is crossed by a water circuit so as to stabilise the table's temperature by thermal conduction. The ta-
ble exchange is very easy.

The heated lens is mounted in a lens holder assembly, and can be easily removed for maintenance purpose.

The stand's enclosure (in fact the sparking chamber) must be aligned on the spectrometer optical axis,
according to the conventional method (dummy grating and target). The S419736 target must be put over the
electrode and the optical axis must be set 1 mm above the electrode (or 2 mm under the sample!).

Most handling and maintenance procedures (removal of the table, cleaning the lens, etc.) are described into
the Reference Manual, chapter 4, Routine Maintenance.
