What are the Factors affecting friction? May 14, 2020
https://dewwool.com/factors-affecting-friction/

The Factors Affecting Friction are:

1. Texture – it is the visual or tactile surface characteristics and appearance of something.

A rough surface has stronger friction than a smooth

surface. Ball bearing, oil or grease are some ways of
reducing friction between two surfaces.

2. Shape - is the form of an object, outline, or external surface.

Objects having streamlined shape face much less frictional force or drag when moving through
a fluid (air or water) than the objects which do not have streamlined shape.

3. Speed – is how fast something moves.

Friction drag force causes objects to slow down as they move through a fluid, such as air or water.

4. Weight – is the amount that a thing weighs

There is greater friction between the surfaces of the heavy objects

than between the surfaces of light objects.
Example: Friction in a Ramp
Materials:

4 books 1 marble Chalk for marking 1 towel

Procedure:
Set Up A. 1. Stack 3 books and use 1 book to make a ramp.
2. Hold the marble at the top of the ramp and release it to roll over the ramp.
Observe the speed of the marble rolling and mark the distance covered by the marble.

Set Up B. 1. The same set up but cover the ramp with a towel.
2. Hold the marble at the top of the ramp and release it to roll over the ramp.
Observe the speed of the marble rolling and mark the distance covered by the marble.

Guide Questions: 1. In which set up did the marble roll faster? _____________
2. What made the marble roll faster? __________________
3. In which set up did the marble cover a longer distance? ____________
4. What made the marble cover a longer distance? _________________
5. What factor affected the movement of the marble? ________________

Activity:
Directions: Compare the strength of the frictional force between objects affected by the identified factors. Put
more than (>) or less than (<) on the space provided.
1. (Texture) carpet _____ wood
2. (Shape) motorcycle ____ tricycle
3. (Speed) bus _____ airplane
4. (Weight) 100 kilograms _______ 200 kilograms
5. (Texture) Wet road _____ dry road
