PRINCIPLES OF ARTS
*The principles of Arts describe the ways that artists use the elements of art in a work of art.

1.BALANCE
- Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space.
Balance is part of the principles of art, which are also referred to as design principles; these are
namely, emphasis, movement, rhythm, proportion, scale, harmony, unity, variety, and
contrast. If you are not familiar with the principles of art, these act as guidelines or rules, so to
say, that assist in composing an artwork into an identifiable format.

2.PROPORTION
-Proportion in art is the comparative harmonious relationship between two or more elements
in a composition with respect to size, color, quantity, degree, setting, etc. Proportion is the
relationship of two or more elements in a design and how they compare with one another. How
proportion is used will affect how realistic or stylised something seems. Proportion also
describes how the sizes of different parts of a piece of art or design relate to each other.

3.EMPHASIS
-Emphasis is the principle of art that helps the audience put the story of a painting together in
their own minds. Any object or area of emphasis is called a focal point. The focal point is
meant to be the part of an artwork to which the viewer's eyes are first attracted. EMPHASIS is
used to attract a viewer's attention to the focal. point, or main subject, of an artwork. For
example, in a portrait the artist usually wants you to see the subject's face first, so the artist
will use color, contrast, and placement to direct where your eye is attracted.

4.VARIETY
-Variety is the principle of art that adds interest to an artwork. Variety works through
juxtaposition and contrast. When an artist places different visual elements next to one another,
he/she is using variety. Straight lines next to curvy lines add variety. Variety refers to how
artists and designers add complexity to their work using visual elements. Contrast, difference
and change, and elaboration all add visual interest to an artist's work.
5.MOVEMENT
-Movement in art is one of the several other principles of art, these are, namely,
balance, emphasis, pattern/repetition, harmony, unity, scale, proportion, and variety.
An art movement is a tendency or style in art with a specific common philosophy or
goal, followed by a group of artists during a specific period of time .

6.RHYTHM
-Rhythm refers to the movement within a piece of art that helps the eye travel through the to a
point of focus. Like in music, rhythm in art can vary in its speed ... some works are more calm
and relaxed while others are more energetic and active. Others may even seem a bit off balance
if the rhythm is regular.

7.HARMONY
-Harmony is the principle of art that creates cohesiveness by stressing the similarities of
separate but related parts. One should note that harmony is not the same as unity. Harmony
does, however, enhance unity in a work of art. Harmony is the visually satisfying effect of
combining similar or related elements. Adjacent colors. Similar shapes.
