FIRST WEEK (04/06/2021- 10/06/2021):

This was the first time, I’m interning under an advocate. I was in very eager but at the same

time I was little nervous. This internship lasted almost a month. I was interning under

advocate Mr. K. THILAGAR who is both a Civil and Criminal lawyer in Cuddalore. He

knew that I was new to this and he was so nice and handled everything politely. On the first

week, he asked me to know some basics. First, he advised me to read both Tamil and English

newspapers daily. I felt strange and I don’t know why he asked me read Tamil newspapers. I

thought English Newspaper help us to improve our vocabulary but why Tamil Newspapers. I

asked him why and he said most of the cases in lower courts are always in Tamil. He gave me

a case file which was in Tamil and asked me try to read and understand what actually the case

is and tell me tomorrow. I was so confident that I could easily understand all but the reality

was different. Most of the words especially legal terms in Tamil were so hard to understand

and I really didn’t know the meaning for most of the words. I asked him “Are Tamil Words

really relevant?”. He said that it would help me future if I decide to write competitive exam

like civil Judge Examination, District Judge Examination and he said these exams always has

a translation paper and most of the aspirant failed in ths part of the Examination. So, I started

learning some basic Tamil terms by reading newspapers and in Internet. So, the first week

was all about basic like learning new tamil words, legal terms and trying to read and translate

Tamil cases files. He taught me very basic things that a lawyer must know. He asked me to

define the terms really simple even a layman could understand.

LAW – I said “laws are set of rules to ensure peace and enforce justice”.

TYPES OF LAWS

1) SUBSTANTIVE LAW- It is the law which talks about “Rights and Duties”
2) PROCEDURAL LAW- It is the law which talks about “How to Enforce Rights and

Duties”

3) MIXED LAW- It is the law which speaks about both “Rights and duties” and “how

to Enforce them”

In case friction between, Substantive law and Procedural Law, Substantive law prevail over

the other one. Generally or Ordinarily, Substantive is Perspective in Nature – Article 20(1) of

the Constitution. He taught us some very basic things in the first week.
