Proposal on Solid Waste Management / Introduction.

One of the greatest issue nowadays is solid waste management. So what really is this solid waste
management. Solid waste management is a term that is used to refer to the process of collecting and
treating solid wastes. It also offers solutions for recycling items that do not belong to garbage or trash. A
process to which disposed garbage are treated properly to maintain cleanliness and also to avoid
pollution and diseases over the community. These solid waste managements is strictly implemented by
Local Government Units throughout the Philippine Archipelago and even amending a law to which
penalizes those who violate this issue.

Philippines is a growing country in Southeast Asia. Its growing population over the entire archipelago
shows why the country needs to provide and follow solid waste management. Health is really wealth
when we talk about priorities nowadays So to avoid such disease Filipinos must always follow this kind
of protocols. We all know Covid 19 Pandemic is the latest caused of many deaths not only in the
Philippines but also entire world. A battle not only fought by others but many. So as a protocol to lessen
the mortality rate nowadays Solid Waste Management would be one of the key solutions to avoid such
deaths. Because cleanliness would lessen the probability of bacteria lurking around us.

In the southern part of the Philippines lays a City known for its remarkable tourist spots that attracts not
only Filipinos living in Northern part of the Philippines but also Foreigners from different countries. One
its major prestige given would be its Pink Sand Beaches and Breath taking Falls that can mesmerize any
traveler. Distinctive foods and traditions that influenced by Spaniards during their era here in the
country. And most of all the people living, such hospitality and warm heartedly. The Asia’s Latin City or
we know Zamboanga City.

Zamboanga City is really a progressing city. New infrastructures are being constructed all over the land.
Different investments from different side of the Philippines are being held in this prestigious City. But as
how progressing it is population also grows fast with just blink of an eye. Due to rampant increase of
population. Management of waste is somehow a question. It is being observed that some barangays in
the city lacks proper solid waste management. Garbage’s are thrown to which ever place people can
see. Waste sometimes are seen in coastal areas floating around like they are part of the bodies of water.
Even huge trash bins composed of garbage’s are not segregated properly form Biodegradable to Non-
Biodegradable. This observation shows an alarming issue specifically when it comes to health topics.

So we strongly believed and made our research paper in connection with this problem. We would like to
have a Proposal of Solid Waste Management in Zamboanga City as a major task to be implemented. This
would not only help us to avoid disease but also it would be an asset to which it can help us improve and
attract more foreigners and investment in leading to a more progressive City
Needs and problems

The most important reason for waste collection is the protection of the environment and the health of
the population. Rubbish and waste can cause air and water pollution. Rotting garbage is also known to
produce harmful gases that mix with the air and can cause breathing problems in people. By this, we
need to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as we can but we lack facilities and equipments to do so.

Purpose and objectives

Building more MRF in Zamboanga city will drastically reduce the pollution caused by wastes and making
profit out of the produced materials by maximizing the quantity of recyclables processed, while
producing materials that will generate the highest possible revenues in the market.

Waste management is an important element of environmental protection. Its purpose is to provide

hygienic, efficient and economic solid waste storage, collection, transportation and treatment or
disposal of waste without polluting the atmosphere, soil or water system.

The project aims to provide an improved solid waste management (SWM) system in Zamboanga City, to
upgrade urban infrastructure and services. The project will develop a sanitary landfill that meets
international standards, rehabilitate transfer stations, and modernize the waste collection and transfer
fleet. It will build capacity in waste management and help formulate a national strategy on solid waste
management.

Procedure

The best solution is recycling of the solid waste. It is the process of converting waste into some new or
usable product thereby preventing waste disposal. Obviously landfill method of disposal has many
limitations. Landfills are likely to cause air water and land pollution in spite of utmost care taken.

This Solid Waste Management (SWM) proposal addresses the disposal of regulated and non-regulated
waste generated by the barangays in Zamboanga city effectively and efficiently.
