OBJECTVES

General objectives:

At the end of the clinical teaching the students will gain the practical skill of catheter care and use it in clinical practice.

Specific objectives:

By the end of the demonstration students will be able to

Another type of catheter is left in place to drain urine


continuously. A urinary catheter that is left in place is a
Foley catheter or an indwelling catheter. The nurse inflates
the balloon on one end of the catheter with sterile water.
The balloon is inside the bladder and keeps the catheter in
place. The other end of the catheter is attached to the
drainage bag.

Nursing Care:

Urinary catheterization is procedure that is performed by a


nurse or a doctor. Special precautions are necessary when
caring for a resident with a Foleys catheter.

 Use Sponge holder to hold the cotton ball and dip in
the antiseptic solution, remove all the extra solution
by squeezing the cotton with thumb forceps into the
kidney tray.
 Female: Separate the labia and clean from upward to
downward direction with the cotton ball. Discard the
cotton ball in kidney tray after each stroke. Repeat for
3-4 times, until visibly clean.
 Male: Clean the head of the penis with the cotton ball
with motions away from the urinary meatus. The fore
skin must be retracted during the procedure.
 Check carefully for dried secretions
 Using a sterile gauze piece, clean the catheter for
three to four inches, beginning from the urinary
meatus and clean away from it. Dry the tube
thoroughly.

 Make sure there is no kinks in the tube


 Secure the catheter on the mid-thigh of the patient
using the micropore- to prevent the dislodgement of
the catheter
 After covering the patient with top sheet remove the
drape covering the patient and the mackintosh
beneath.
 Remove the gloves and wash hand

 A urinary bag is emptied at every shift, and the


amount of urine should be measured and recorded
in the patients intake output chart.
 With the gloves donned, clamp the urinary drain
tubing
 Remove the knob of the drainage bag. Empty the
content in the measuring cane (graduate). Don not
use the measurement on the side of the drainage
bag as they not be accurate.
 Make sure that the knob of the drainage bag is
closed at all time.
 Measure the urine and document it in the intake-
output chart.

6. Terminate the procedure for catheter care:
