Chapter 3 ǀ RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the systematic research methods, the research design, the

locale, data procedures, and research instrument to be employed for data gathering

purposes, analysis and interpretation of gathered data in order to achieve favorable

outcome in fulfilling the researcher’s aims and objectives. This chapter will outline

the well-suited methodology that will be based on qualitative analysis through

explorative research on multiple resources and analyzing each collected information

needed to provide the best design solution.

Research Design

The methodology used in this study were descriptive and analysis of data

supported by surveys and validation through interviews. Site inspection and survey,

data gathered were reviewed, analyzed and discussed in the succeeding chapters.

Literature and studies were also used as a basis in this study.

The research investigates the applicability of the sustainability and functional

concept in the planning and design of centers for the elders. Furthermore, the issues

related to a functionality development such as carrying capacity have to be addressed

in a systematic manner. This chapter presented the methodological steps taken to

complete the research study and to address the concerns. The following steps were

done during the research process. Every step has been defined in detail and

justification.

Research Methods and Instruments

Relevant data were gathered from primary and secondary sources, evaluated,

analyzed, and synthesized.

1. Data sources. Information from the following data sources were obtained:

a. Data from interviews. The views of personalities representing various

sectors in the community were considered such as the public city officials,

business sector, religious sector, education sector, and religious sector.

This is the gathering of information from the person or person having

concrete knowledge of the study and credibility to give of advice,

comments, and suggestions. This is the attainment of pertinent information

to the requirements, amenities, facilities, and policies, the proponents

conferred with the certain persons and agencies. In this study the

researcher has also prepared questionnaires being asked during interviews

on intended persons for the development of the study. Interviews with the

existing senior citizens in the city have been done for further first-hand

information. Funding, existing facilities, and other considerations by the

centers were considered.

b. Library sources. Books, maps of the study area and existing plans of public

spaces were used. The relevant and desired information must only be

considered in order to give credibility to the proponents’ goals and

objectives. Researching with this method may be through books,

newspapers, magazines and other related references that may be useful to

the development of the study.

c. Data from actual site inspection and photo-documentation of the study area

which includes the existing condition of the public spaces, the surrounding

buildings and actual road conditions were considered. This includes the

investigation of the physical features and aspects of the site that resolute

the plans, details, and external vies. This includes the investigation of the

physical components and aspects of the site including the availability of

the facilities and amenities, accessibility and other basic needs. Cameras

have been used as device in recording data for the site documentation.

d. On line Research Materials. Online researching is the method of data

gathering in a wider or broader way. This method of researching may be

very beneficial for reaching through related data that shall be needed in the

development of the study. Formulated sets of criteria of evaluating the

public spaces.

2. Data Collection instruments. Interviews, ocular survey, and library

technique were among the instruments employed in data gathering.

Personalities from different sectors and actual people in the public spaces were

interviewed. Ocular survey was conducted involving extensive photo-

documentation of the public spaces and the vicinity of the study area.

3. Evaluation and Analysis. After conducting meticulous investigation of the

subject area, evaluation and analysis were made based on the formulated sets

of criteria and results were obtained.

4. Conclusion and Recommendation. This is the final step of the study where

the researcher answered all the questions raised and gave corresponding

recommendations for further development of the study.
