Your memory often changes as you
grow older. But memory loss that dis-
rupts daily life is not a typical part of
aging. It may be a symptom of de-
mentia. Dementia is a slow decline
in memory, thinking and reasoning
skills.
The most common form of dementia
is Alzheimer’s disease, a fatal disor-
der that results in the loss of brain cells
and functions.

For some people, having visual problems is a
sign of Alzheimer’s. They may have difficulty
reading, judging distance and determining
color or contrast.

or writing – People with Alzheimer’s disease
may have trouble following or joining a con-
versation. They may stop in the middle of a
conversation and have no idea how to con-
tinue or they may repeat themselves. They
may struggle with vocabulary, have prob-
lems finding the right word or call things by
the wrong name.
7) Misplacing things and losing the ability
to retrace steps – A person with Alzheimer’s
may put things in unusual places. They may
lose things and be unable to go back over
their steps to find them again. Sometimes
they may accuse others of stealing. This may
occur more frequently over time.
8) Decreased or poor judgment – People
with Alzheimer’s may experience changes in
judgment or decision-making. For example,
they may use poor judgment when dealing
with money, giving large amounts to telemar-
keters. They may pay less attention to groom-
ing or keeping themselves clean.

start to remove themselves from hobbies, so-
cial activities, work projects or sports. They
may have trouble keeping up with a favorite
sports team or remembering how to complete
a favorite hobby. They may also avoid being
social because of the changes they have ex-
perienced.
10) Changes in mood and personality –
The mood and personalities of people with
Alzheimer’s can change. They can become
confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful or
anxious. They may be easily upset at home,
at work, with friends or in places where they
are out of their comfort zone.
It may be hard to know the difference
between age-related changes and the first
signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Some people
may recognize changes in themselves before
anyone else notices. Other times, friends and
family will be the first to observe changes in
memory behavior or abilities.

Exploring senior living communities is a process
that’s best started while you’re enjoying life. Know-
ing which options can accommodate your needs
and desired lifestyle before a health event forces
your move puts you in control and offers peace of
mind.
Living spaces
Our region is fortunate to have many senior liv-
ing communities, so you have choices. These living
spaces come in all shapes and sizes, from single
homes and cottages to apartments and duplexes lo-
cated in urban, suburban, or rural settings.
A worthwhile community provides the comforts
of home without the responsibilities and worries of
homeownership, as well as activities, programs,
services and amenities. St. Ann’s Community, for

If you’re considering a senior living community,
the best next step that you can take is to call the
community’s representative. Talk through the move-
in process, the amenities and the community. Then,
schedule a time to tour the space and see it for your-
self. It’s important to make sure that the community
you move to is the right fit for you - don’t rush it. 
Additionally, at each place you visit, don’t be
afraid to ask what happens if you start to need
health care services. Can you receive them in your
apartment or cottage, or do you have to move? Will

Function
Your first step is to consider the function of the
room. What exactly will you be doing in this
room? Do you eat in your kitchen, or in a dining
