Exercises 1. Reflection (Individual Activity)

Instructions. Find an image that depicts an issue or problem in science and technology. Then, answer
the following questions.

1. What is the issue or problem depicted in the image?

The image brought attention to the fact that science and technology are some of the
factors contributing to one of the biggest challenges in recent years which is climate change. Science
and technology have the greatest contribution to climate change since their increased energy demand
directly increases the amount of fossil fuels burned. Modern planes, cars, trains, and ships have made it
possible for us to travel all around the world, but as a result of technological advancements and an
increase in traffic and travel, carbon emissions have also increased.

2. How does this particular issue or problem impact the well-being of humans today?
Climate change is a change in the world’s weather systems that occurs over decades.
Most of the recent changes in our climate have been brought about by human activity and the used of
science and technology. These changes will have significant consequences for our physical and mental
health, wellbeing, and safety. A suddenly changes in climate is expected to increase the risk of illnesses
and death from changes in the spread of infectious diseases, threats to food and water quality and
quantity, and extreme heat and poor air quality. It will likely increase the frequency and strength of
extreme events (such as floods, droughts, and storms) that threaten human health and safety. Climate
changes may expose more people to diseases and most vulnerable to its health impacts are the very
young and very old people.
3. Why is it important for people to study and learn about STS as an academic field, especially in
addressing the issue or problem depicted in the image.
The study of science and technology (STS) informs people about the impact of science
and technology on society. It is inevitable that science and technology are now a part of our daily lives
because we live in a modern era where they have helped us advance significantly. People who study
(STS) are more likely to exercise critical thought and come up with new solutions to problems in science
and technology. Like in the issue that is depicted in the image, studying (STS) will help us individual to
understand the world around us, and in turn, this awareness will allow us to be prepared for new
changes in the world. We can have a better understanding of how science and technology affect the
world around us, we will learn not just critically but to think analytically, and we will learn to evaluate
the ideas that we encounter. Additionally, it is also significant not just to us normal people living in the
community but also to all scientists and inventors to limit their action in making technology that will lead
to more carbon emissions instead they should make more renewable energy technologies such as
advanced biofuels, wind, and solar that will help to reduce carbon emissions and lessen the effects of
climate change.

Activity 1. If I were an inventor…

1. What is your invention? What does it do?

My invention is a “flying shoes” and its main function is to make individuals can fly and
travel wherever they want to go.
2. How is your invention similar to or different from existing tools or technologies in terms of function?
This invention is inimitable, even though these flying shoes are looked like just normal
shoes with various design and size. But in terms of function these shoes will surely amazed people.
These flying shoes are solar and it used solar energy (power or heat) that comes from the sun. It has a
remote-control to open the motor with propeller and it has also a button for adjusting the speed and
high (accelerometer and altimeter). In addition, it has also a camera on the bottom of the flying shoes
and it can connect with your gadgets. However, when you are using them you cannot fly more than 5
meters from the ground for its safety. Also, these flying shoes are allowed for 15-50 yrs. old only and
weighing no more than 70 kilograms, because those aged less than 15 and more than 50 and also with
71 kilograms above couldn’t control the shoes skillfully.

3. Why is there a need for this invention? How will this invention make the world a better place to live
in? Nowadays, one of the biggest problems in most modern cities is traffic and accident caused by
road vehicles. Roads that were built a long time ago simply can’t cope with the ongoing and huge
number of cars, trucks and other vehicles that compete for space today. These land-based vehicles burn
fossil fuels that produces several harmful substances that are directly harmful to the health of humans.
As a solution, my invention will be a great help and solution for these. It will become the best
technology for the universe as it gives a lot of benefits and advantages. This invention can minimize
traffic, lower emissions and reduces fuel consumption, frees up the city roads for pedestrians and
cyclists, less need for on the ground infrastructure, easy to build (building, tower and bridges). Most
importantly, we can travel anywhere and go to our destination faster and safer with these flying shoes.
This invention will make the world a better place to live in.
