ASYNCHRONOUS ACTIVITY 34 IN MATHEMATICS 10

Name: Date:
Section: Teacher: MR. MAR T. STA. MARIA

MARemember:
Arithmetic Series is the sum of the terms in an arithmetic sequence. It can be solved using the
formula Sn = n2 (a1 + an), given the 1stand last term of the sequence or
Sn = n2[ 2a1+ (n – 1) d], given the first term and the common difference.

Illustrative Example 1:
Find the sum of the arithmetic sequence 3, 7, 11, 15,19, 23.

Solution:
Given the 1st term (a1) and last term (an) we use the formula Sn = n2 (a1 + an).
Substituting n = 6, a1 = 3 and an = 23 in the formula
n
Sn = (a1 + an)
2
6
S6 = (3 + 23)
2
S6 = 3 (26)
S6 = 78
Illustrative Example 2:
Find the sum of the first 10 terms of the arithmetic sequence 12, 17, 22, 27, …

Solution 1:
We first find a10 by substituting a1 = 12, d = 5 and n = 10 in the formula
an = a1 + (n - 1) d
a10 = 12 + (10 - 1) 5
a10 = 12 + (9) 5
a10 = 12 + 45
a10 = 57
Solving for S10, we substitute n = 10, a1 = 12 and an = 57 in the formula
n
Sn = (a1 + an)
2
10
S10 = (12 + 57)
2
S10 = 5 (69)
S10 = 345

Therefore, the sum of the first 10 terms of the arithmetic sequence 12, 17, 22, 27,
… is 345.

Solution 2:
Substituting a1 = 12, d = 5 and n = 10 in the formula
n
Sn = [ 2a1 + (n – 1) d ]
2
10
S10 = [ 2(12)+ (10 – 1) 5 ]
2
S10 = 5 [ 24+ (9) 5 ]
S10 = 5 [ 24+ 45 ]
S10 = 5 [ 69 ]
S10 = 345

B. Answer the following problems. Write your complete solutions.

1.  Khirsten Cazzy is a resident of Paseo Heneral Dos Subdivision in City of
General Trias, Cavite. She has a five(5) rows of seats in her home theater room.
There are 2 seats in the first row, 3 seats in the second, 4 in the third and so on.
How many total seats does Khirsten Cazzy’s home theater room have? (2 points)

2. Mr. Amurao, a scout leader, is planning to construct a trapezoidal shaped

structure in front of their base camp. The longer side of the trapezoid needs to
start with a row of 12 hollow blocks. Each row must be decreased by 3 hollow
blocks on each end and the construction should stop at the 4th row. How many
hollow blocks does he need to buy? (3 points)
