QUESTION 1
a) What is the commercial unit of electrical energy? (1)
A. Joule B. kilowatt C. kilowatt-hour D. calorie
b) Which of the following represents properties of a fuse wire? (1)
A. High resistance & high melting point
B. High resistance & low melting point
C. Low resistance & low melting point
D. Low resistance & high melting point
c) The energy used by a 30 W bulb which is switched on for 4 hours is (1)
A. 120 kWh B. 0.12 kWh C. 1.2 kWh D. 1200 kWh
d) Household circuits consist of three wires. What colour is for the live wire? (1)
A. Brown B. Green C. Red D. Light blue
e) TV has a power rating of 800 W, 240 V. What is the suitable fuse rating for the TV? (1)
A. 1 A B. 3 A C. 5 A D. 10 A
f) Identify the circuit component (1)
A. Single pole switch B. Double pole switch
C. Fuse D. Miniature circuit breaker (MCB)

g) Which diagram shows the correct positions for both the switch and the fuse? (1)

h) After some building work in a house, a bare (uninsulated) live wire is left protruding from a (1)
wall. What is the greatest hazard?
A. a fire B. a fuse blown C. an electric shock D. no current flows
i) The electric meter in the house records the (1)
A. Charge B. Current C. Energy D. Power
j) What is the other name for live (L) wire? (1)
A. Neutral B. Phase C. Earth D. Potential
SECTION B (Answer in brief)
QUESTION 2
a) i. In the given three-pin socket, identify and write Live (L), Neutral (N) and Earth (3)
(E) against the correct number. 1 – Earth, 2 – Neutral, 3 – Live / Phase
ii. To which part of the appliance is terminal 1 connected?
Metal body of appliance
iii. To which wire joined to 1, 2 or 3 is the fuse connected? Live wire
b) i. Define fuse and state its working principle. (3)
An electric fuse is a safety device which is used to limit the current in an electric
circuit and safeguard the circuit and the appliances connected in that circuit from
being damaged. Principle of Fuse: A fuse works on the heating effect of electric
ii. current.
State two advantages an MCB offers over the fuse.
• It avoids the inconvenience of connecting a new fuse wire
• It is much safer due to its quick response (~ 25 ms)
c) Three identical bulbs A, B and C each of rating 100 W, 220 V are (4)
connected to the mains (220 V) as shown.
i. How is the bulb A connected with the mains? At voltage does it glow?
Bulbs are connected in parallel to the mains supply.
Bulb A glows at the same voltage as the mains supply (generally
220 V in India). Bulb B and bulb C receive half the supply voltage as they are in series
(as they have the same resistance); i.e. around 110 V.
ii. How is the glow of bulb A and C affected if bulb B gets fused? Give reason to support your
answer. Bulb A continues to work as it is connected in parallel with bulb B. However,
bulb C which is connected in series with bulb B will not glow.
