Problem Set No. 1

1.) Hearing rattles from a snake, you make two rapid displacements of magnitude 1.8m and
2.4m. In sketches, show how your two displacements might add up to give a resultant of
magnitude:
2.) A sailor in a small sailboat encounters shifting winds. She sails 2.00 km east, then 3.50 km
45º southeast, and then an additional distance in an unknown direction. Her final position is 5.80
km directly east of the starting point. Find the magnitude and direction of the third leg of the
journey. Draw the vector addition diagram and solve analytically.
3. ) Based from the figure, there is a given weight hanging to be 60.0N.
4. ) Imagine a see-saw. On one side, there is a person with a weight of 700N. He is sitting 3.5m
away from the pivot. On the other side, is a person weighing 550N. How far away must (s)he sits
for the see-saw be balanced?
5. ) A uniform, 255-N rod that is 2.00m long carries a 225-N weight at its right end and an
unknown weight W toward the left end. When W is placed 50.0cm from the left end of the rod,
the system just balances horizontally when the fulcrum is located 75.0cm from the right end.
