CHEMISTRY
Class: 11 Max Marks: 35
No. of pages: 4 Time:1Hr15Min

General Instructions:
 All questions are compulsory.
 There are 10 questions in this paper
 Section A has Q 1-4 which are objective type questions and carry one mark each

 Section C has Q 8 -10 , carry 3 marks each

SECTION A

1. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: 1X5
Electron gain enthalpy of an element is the energy released when a neutral isolated
gaseous atom accepts an extra electron to form the gaseous anion. It is denoted by
ΔegH. Greater the amount of energy released, higher is the electron gain enthalpy of the
element. The electron gain enthalpy of an element is a measure of the firmness or
strength with which an extra electron is bound to it. It is measured in electron volts per
atom or kJ per mole. It can be an endothermic or an exothermic reaction.
i) The electron gain enthalpy of noble gases is
a) always positive b) sometimes positive
c) always negative d) cannot say
ii) If the EGE for Bromine is 12.6kJ/mol and its atomic mass is 80g/mol, the
EGE for 8g of Bromine in joules will be:
a) 6300 b) 1260
c) 126 d) 630
iii) The factor that does not affect the EGE of an atom is
a) atomic size b) nuclear charge
c) electronic configuration d) none
iv) The EGE becomes less negative down a group. Which of these
statements is false?
a) EGE of chlorine is more negative than fluorine
b) Down the group the EGE of elements decreases
c) Nitrogen has the highest negative EGE in its group
d) All halogens have negative electron gain enthalpies
v) An ionic bond formation is favoured when
a) the electropositive element has low IE
b) the electronegative element has high EGE
c) both the above conditions are satisfied
d) insufficient data

2. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: 1X5

The study of dipole moment of a molecule is useful to explain the shape of a

molecule and also to predict a number of other properties. The net dipole moment
of a polyatomic molecule is the resultant of the different bond moments present in
that molecule. The values are generally expressed in Debye units or in terms of
Coulomb-meter.
In the following questions a statement of Assertion (A) followed by a statement of
Reason (R) is given. Choose the correct option out of the choices given below.

(A) A and R both are correct, and R is the correct explanation of A.

(B) A and R both are correct, but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(C) A is true but R is false.
(D) A is false and Ris true.

(i) Assertion: Among CO2, H2O, HI and SO2, H2O has the highest dipole
moment.
Reason: Polarity in a molecule and hence the dipole moment depends
primarily on electronegativity of the constituent atoms and shape of a
molecule.

(ii) Assertion:1 Debye is equivalent to 1.602 x 10-27 Cm

Reason: Dipole moment is the product of charge and distance of
separation.

(iii) Assertion: NH3 is more soluble in water than NF3.

Reason: N-F bond is more polar than N-H bond.

(iv) Assertion: H2S is a gas but H2O is a liquid at room temperature.

Reason: H2O and H2S have the same dipole moment as oxygen and
sulphur belong to the same group.

(v) Assertion: CO2 is a polar molecule as C-O bond is polar in nature

Reason: C-O bond dipoles cancel each other in CO2 molecule.

3. Choose the correct answer from the options given for each question: 1X5

(i) Which of the following has a regular geometry?

(a) CHCl3 (b) NH3
(c) XeF6 (d) SF4

(ii) Which of the following elements can show covalency greater than 4?
(a) Be (b) P
(c) C (d) B

(iii) The number of lone pairs of electrons on the central atom of H 2O, PCl3 and
XeF2 respectively are:
(a) 2, 1, 3 (b) 2, 2, 3
(c) 3, 1, 1 (d) 2, 1, 2

(iv) Which of the following compounds contain both covalent and ionic bonds?
(a) NaCl (b) KCl
(c) CH4 (d) NH4Cl

2
(v) In which of the following options, order of arrangement does not agree with
the variation of property indicated against it?
(a) Al+3 < Mg+2 < Na+ < F- (increasing ionic size)
(b) B < C < N < O (increasing IE1)
(c) Li I > Li Br > LiCl > LiF (decreasing order of covalent nature)
(d) Li < Na < K < Rb (increasing metallic radius)

4. Choose the correct answer from the options given below: 1X5

In the following questions a statement of Assertion (A) followed by a statement of

Reason (R) is given. Choose the correct option out of the choices given below each
question.

(A) A and R both are correct, and R is the correct explanation of A.

(B) A and R both are correct, but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(C) A is true but R is false.
(D) A is false and R is true.

(i) Assertion: IE1 for nitrogen is greater than that of oxygen.

Reason: Across a period, effective nuclear charge increases.

(ii) Assertion: Solubility of NaCl > CaCl2 > MgO in water.

Reason: Lattice enthalpies of the compounds also are in the same order.

(iii) Assertion: Bond angle in water is equal to the H-C-H bond angle in CH4.
Reason: Oxygen in water has 2 lone pairs on it.

(iv) Assertion: Oxidation state of Nitrogen in N2O5 is +5

Reason: Nitrogen cannot exhibit an oxidation state more than 4.

(v) Assertion: NH4+ is tetrahedral while NH3 is pyramidal in shape.

Reason: Nitrogen has a lone pair of electrons on it in both the entities.

SECTION B

5. Give reason: 2
i) The IE2 of Na is greater than that of Ne.
ii) Electron gain enthalpy of sulphur is more negative than that of oxygen.

6. Compare the sizes of Cl, Cl+3 and Cl-1 with suitable explanation. 2

7. The skeletal structure of CH3COOH is shown below. Draw the correct Lewis
structure for acetic acid. Also calculate the formal charge on carbon that is bonded 2
to oxygen.

SECTION C

8. The first ionization enthalpy values (in kJ mol–1) of group 13 elements are: 3
B Al Ga In Tl
801 577 579 558 589
How would you explain the
(i) small increase in the IE from Al to Ga
(ii) decrease in IE from Ga to In
(iii) increase in IE from In to Tl
9. i) What would you name an element, systematically according to IUPAC system if 3
its Z=119 and it is yet to be proved as a new addition to the periodic table?
ii) Write the formula of the binary compound formed from Mg and N.
iii)Write the period and group to which the element with Z=28 belongs.
