1. PURPOSE
This procedure describes the laboratory analysis to be performed on export crude oil on board
FPSO.
The procedure is also applicable to test samples and at process sampling point.
It indicates for each analysis, the sampling procedure, the applicable code and method, the
frequency.

2. FIELD OF APPLICATION
The procedure covers standard Oil analysis to certify export Oil quality and test samples.
Produced water analysis is excluded from this procedure.
The main sampling points are:
• Automatic sampler on 24” line on Oil Metering package Skid
• Well head,
• Inlet / outlet Test Separator (2DS301),
• BD 1 oil expedition line (PID-AA 1214),
• Oil reception to oil heater 4 EC 301 (PID- AA-0218)
• Outlet oil FPSO Separator 4-DS-302 (PID AA-0220)
• Outlet Oil Desalting unit 4 DS 303 (PID AA0222)
The samples are taken by the laboratory technician or by a trained operator.
On specific request from COMPANY, other analysis can be performed.

5. PROCEDURE

5.1 EXPORT OIL ANALYSIS


During the offloading phase, oil is continuously sampled using the automatic sampler and sample
recovered at the end of the offloading. See table 1.

5.2 STOCK TANK OIL ANALYSIS


At dehydrator outlet, Oil quality is controlled routinely as described in table 2:
Samples shall be taken at Oil Desalting unit 4 DS 303 (PID AA0222) Outlet

5.5 SAMPLING PROCEDURE

All samples shall be clearly identified (origin, date and time) of sampling recorded on Analysis
Report Forms (see Annex 01).
The samples are used to determine the quality of oil at standard conditions 14.73 psia at 60 ºF or
15ºC.
1. Use safety glasses and rubber gloves.
2. Start and stop automatic sampler as per Manufacturer recommendation.
3. Dedicated hermetic sampling container must be used for RVP analysis in order to get
representative vapour phase.
4. Protect sample from rain and dust, remove the earthing chain and bring it to the lab.
5. CLEAN ANY SPILLS IMMEDIATELY AND ENSURE THAT THE SAMPLING VALVE IS WELL
CLOSED.

5.6 ANALYSIS PROCEDURE

5.6.01 B. S .W:
As per ASTM D4007: water and sediment in crude oil by the centrifuge method.
1. Fill each tube to the 50 ml mark with toluene.
2. Add the sample up to the 100 ml mark. Care must be taken in order not to fill the centrifuge
tube past the 100 ml mark.
3. Add 0.2 ml of demusifier – toluene mixed solution to each tube.
4. Invert the tubes 10 times to ensure that oil and solvent are uniformly mixed.
5. Place the tubes on opposite sides of centrifuge to establish a balanced condition.
6. Start the centrifuge for 20 minutes at 60 ºC.
7. Immediately after the centrifuge comes to rest, read and record the results.
8. Return the tubes without agitation to the centrifuge and spin for another 20 minutes.
9. Record the final volume of water and sediment in each tube.
10. If the difference between the two readings is greater than one subdivision on the centrifuge
tube, the determination shall be repeated.
11. Express the sum of the 2 admissible readings as the percent by volume of water and sediment.

5.6.02 A. P. I gravity:
As per ASTM D1298: density, relative density (specific gravity) or API gravity of crude
petroleum and liquid petroleum products by Hydrometer.
1. Transfer the sample to a clean 500 ml hydrometer cylinder without splashing.
2. Remove any air bubbles.
3. Place the cylinder in a vertical position free of air currents.
4. Let the sample to stabilize in temperature.
5. Lower the hydrometer gently into the sample
6. Take care to avoid wetting the stem above the level to which it will be immersed in the liquid.
7. As soon as a steady reading is obtained, record the temperature to the nearest 0.5 ºC or 1 ºF.
8. When the hydrometer has come to rest floating freely away from the walls of cylinder, read the
hydrometer scale to the nearest 0.1 ºAPI.
9. For opaque liquid reading is taking at the top of the meniscus.
10. No corrections for black oils are applied (as per ASTM D1298 table 1 specification).

11. Correct the value for temperature using table 5B (ASTM Tables).

5.6.03 Density at 15ºC:


As per ASTM D1298: density, relative density (specific gravity) or API gravity of crude
petroleum and liquid petroleum products by Hydrometer.
1. Transfer the sample to a clean 500 ml hydrometer cylinder without splashing.
2. Remove any air bubbles.
3. Place the cylinder in a vertical position free of air currents.
4. Let the sample to stabilize in temperature.
5. Lower the hydrometer gently into the sample
6. Take care to avoid wetting the stem above the level to which it will be immersed in the liquid.
7. As soon as a steady reading is obtained, record the temperature to the nearest 0.5 ºC or 1 ºF.
8. When the hydrometer has come to rest floating freely away from the walls of cylinder, read the
hydrometer scale to the nearest 0.0001 density.
9. For opaque liquid, reading is taking at the top of the meniscus.
10. For black oils, the reading requires correction. 0.0007 need to be adding (as per ASTM D1298
table 1 specification for hydrometer with interval of 0.0005).
11. Correct the value for temperature using table 53A (ASTM Tables). .

5.6.04 Reid Vapor Pressure:


As per ASTM D323: Vapor pressure of petroleum products (Reid method)
1. Take the sample in a hermetic container (Refer to Annex 1)
2. The sample size shall be 70 – 80 % of the container size.
3. In all cases, the sample container and contents shall be cooled to 0 – 1ºC before the container is
opened.
4. Sufficient time shall be assured to cool down the sample.
5. Note: 1 litre sample in an ice water bath needs 1 hour and half to reach 0ºC.
6. On the same time place the gasoline chamber in the ice water bath or in the fridge.
7. Immerse the air chamber for not less than 10 minutes in the water bath at 37.8 ºC. Do not
remove the air chamber from the bath until the gasoline chamber has been filled with the sample.
8. Fill the gasoline chamber to overflowing.
9. Immediately remove the air chamber from the water bath, and as quickly as possible attach the
air chamber to the gasoline chamber.
10. Turn the assembled vapour pressure apparatus upside down and allow the entire sample in the
gasoline chamber to run into the air chamber.
11. With the apparatus still inverted, shake it vigorously eight times in a direction parallel to the length
of the apparatus.
12. With the gauge end up, immerse the assembled apparatus in the bath at 37.8 ºC.
13. After that the assembled vapor pressure apparatus has been immersed in the bath for at least 5
minutes, observe the reading.
14. Withdraw the apparatus from the bath and repeat step 10.
15. At intervals of less than 2 minutes perform the steps 10-11 until a total of not less than five
shaking and gauge readings have been made.
16. Continue the after if necessary until the last two consecutive gauge readings are constant

17. Read the final results in Kpa.


18. Disconnect the manometer and clean the Bourdon tube with solvent after each test.

5.6.05 Salt content:
As per method ASTM D3230: salts in crude oil (electronic method).
1. Verify that the electrode and all the glassware are clean (using solvent, distilled water and
acetone).
2. Use only xylene as organic solvent and alcohol solvent mixed solution (63% Butanol and 37%
2 Methanol).
3. Daily, make a blank as follows:
- In a clean dry 100 ml cylinder add 15 ml of xylene, 10 ml of neutral oil.
- Adjust to 50 ml with Xylene and shake vigorously for 60 seconds.
- Dilute to 100 ml with alcohol mixed solution and shake for 30 seconds.
- Allow the solution to stand 5 minutes.
- Pour 90 ml of the solution to a dry beaker.
- Select the calibration, daily blank and store the results in the internal
memory.
4. To a dry 100 ml graduated cylinder add 15 ml of xylene.
5. Add directly 10 ml of crude oil sample.
6. Make up to 50 ml with xylene.
7. Shake vigorously for at least 1 minute.
8. Dilute to 100 ml with mixed alcohol and again shake vigorously for 30 seconds.
9. After allowing the solution to stand for 5 minutes, pour it into the dry electrode beaker
10. Care must be taken in order to use every time the same volume (90 ml).
11. Wait the electrode stabilization
12. Record the results as pounds per thousand barrels
13. Note: DO NOT subtract the blank results as the analyzer gives directly the corrected results.
14. Make calibration every 6 months.

5.6.06 Pour point:


Two ASTM methods can be applied:
2 As per method ASTM D5949: pour point (electronic method).
1. Before turning on the analyzer, ensure that the sample cup is void of sample and that the
chamber lid is closed and locked.
2. Turn the main power switch to the ON position.
3. Wait the auto test is completed to push FINISH on the screen.
4. Transfer a portion of the sample in a 100 ml sampler.
5. Prepare a clean automatic pipette assembly (150 µL).
6. Open the test chamber lid.
7. Fill the automatic pipette with the sample.
8. Rinse twice the sample holder inside the chamber by releasing the sample from the pipette into
the sample chamber holder. Mop the holder dry with a clean cotton swab.
9. Pipette the final sample.
10. Ensure that the sample does not form any bubbles inside the holder. If bubbles are formed,
burst them gently poking them with pipette.
11. Close the chamber lid gently and lock it firmly by moving the lock lever to the left.
12. Press CHANGE SETTING on the control panel screen to enter the sample name
13. Insert the following setting:
- Sample type: Base oil
- Run mode: Pour
- Pre heat: off

14. Press RUN on the control panel screen
15. At the end of the run, the results are displayed on the status box.
16. Record the results as pour point in ºC.
17. Wait until the cup temperature reaches 20 ºC before opening the chamber
18. Clean the sample holder with a clean cotton swab and a few drop of toluene
19. To repeat pour point determinations always replace the sample with a fresh one before pressing
RUN.

As per method ASTM D97: pour point (Automatic method).

1. Check that the cables are connected and the button START/STOP in STOP position. Switch on
the PC and the Analyzer.
2. Fill the test jar with a representative sample until the mark, put it in ice bath (until temperature
0
about 9 C) without stirring of the oil to save test time and to allow the formation of paraffin wax
crystals created, any disturbance of wax crystals will lead to low and erroneous results.
3. Open the main program, and click on the analysis button, select the method ASTM D 97
External (without internal heating), put the file name and the operator name in the dedicated
areas, fix the test jar containing the sample to the analytical head which is in loading position.
4. Check that the sample temperature sensor is immersed into the oil and the beginning of the
tube is below the surface of the oil, insert the expected pour point in order to start titling of
sample 9 0C before temperature selected, for offloading sample, the expected pour point – 6 0C,
so the analyzer starts titling of sample at temperature + 3 0C.
5. The analyzer is ready to start the analysis, press ok to start on screen, and then press START
button on the analyzer.
6. During the run, the movement of the oil should be observed visually especially in horizontal
position to avoid any doubt with the automatic pour point analyzer. To remove condensed
moisture that limits visibility, wipe the surface of test jar with a clean cloth moistened in
methanol.
7. As soon as the oil in the test jar does not flow when tilted in horizontal position, the automatic
pour point analyzer provides the pour point reading without correction, but in case of detection
of the pour point manually, 3 0C is added to the temperature of sample showing no movement
when the test jar in horizontal position.
8. If the differences between manual and automatic runs are greater than 3 0C, the run must be
repeated another time by changing the sample, do not use the same sample in the test jar.
