PART –B Answer any one question from each unit 3 x 14marks = 42


8. a) What is Steam? Explain the Formation of steam process. What are the Advantages of super-
heated steam? (14 marks)

b) A closed vessel 0.5m3 capacity contains dry saturated steam at 3.5 bar. The vessel is cooled
until the pressure is reduced to 2 bar. Calculate a) The mass of steam in the vessel b) The final
dryness fraction of the steam. c) The amount of heat transferred during the cooling process. (14
marks)

9. a) A quantity of dry saturated steam at 10 bar occupies 0.3886 m 3 compressed isothermally until the
volume is halved. Determine the final condition of steam and also heat transferred. (14 marks)
OR
b) 2kg / sec of steam initially at a pressure of 15 bar and a temperature of 250ºC expands
adiabatically to a pressure of 1.5 bar. Determine the quality of steam, steady flow work done and
power developed (14 marks)

10. a) i) Comparison of fire tube and water tube boilers. (7 marks)
