AHAB (advancing).

(During the scene, the carpenter continues sneezing at

times.)
Well, manmaker!
Just in time, sir. If the captain pleases, I will now mark the length. Let me
measure, sir.
Ahab starts to look at his crew member. He realizes it’s the same man, that
big, tall and tanned man that enjoys having his meal while climbing the main
sail of the ship. What a jackass! Ahab hated his beard is long and white, and
his creased hands always seem to long for a good grasp. The man then
shouted to Ahab:
Oh, sir, it will break bones—beware, beware!
No fear; I like a good grip; I relish to feel something in this slippery world
that can hold, man. What’s Prometheus about there?—the blacksmith, I mean
—what’s he about?
He must be forging the buckle-screw, sir, now.
Right. It’s a partnership; he supplies the muscle part. He makes a fierce red
flame there!
Aye, sir; he must have a divine heat for this kind of fine work.
Um-m. So he must. And so need I, some kind of divine aid or something of
that kind, so that I can finally hunt the Big Whale. Aye, that beast. Some men
call it Moby Dick – its enormous mouth can swallow a whole ship in a breath;
its tail full of scars can wreck a hundred whalers. Men of all ages, young and
old, are terrified to even hear about its pointy and sharp teeth.
Sir? Is that thing your monster?...
