Part 7: Multiple passages
• In this part you will read a selection of texts, such as
magazine and newspaper articles, letters, and
Pre-task 1 advertisements. Each text is followed by several
questions.
• You should select the best answer for each question
and mark the letter (A), (B), (C), or (D).
Pre-task 2 This part contains 25 questions and it is the last part of the test.
In this part of the test, you will be asked to answer 5 sets of double or triple passages with 5 questions per set.
The passages in this section are of various formats and are based on materials usually found in everyday life
and workplace situations: Each text is followed by several questions.
• advertisements (jobs, products, services, etc.)
• correspondence (letters, emails, memos, postcards, etc.)
• forms (questionnaires, orders, etc.)
• notices and signs
• newspaper or magazine articles
The information needed to answer the questions is usually mentioned in the passages. In some cases, you
have to make inferences (make conclusions) from the information provided.
You should not read the whole article word by word (very time-consuming). You don’t have to understand
every single word in the text either.
Try to use no more than 60 seconds on each item. If you don’t know the answer to a question, make a guess
and move on.
Scan the passage for the key words/ideas, then choose the best answer choice.
5 minutes
In inference questions, the answer will not be stated directly in the passage. Look for words or ideas in the
passage related to the things noted in each answer choice.

TOEIC two skills reading comprehension part 7: Reading passages
Here are some tips for you:
Post- task
Be prepared for reading comprehension tests. Know exactly what each
type of question is asking you to do. Is it a multiple choice? Is it filling in the
gaps of a text? How many words do you have to write? How much time do
you have? It's a good idea to underline important words in any exam
question to help you focus on the
Speed up. In exam situations you will often need to read a text more quickly
than before. Practice reading texts quickly: you can time yourself. For
example, give yourself 3 minutes to read 300 words, then give yourself 2
minutes to read 300 words, then try in 1 minute. You can repeat this idea with
the same text at first, but then try it with different texts as you get better at it.
5 minutes
Don’t freeze. Remember, in an exam you aren’t allowed to ask someone or
look up a new word. If you don’t know a word, and you can’t guess a general
whole class meaning from the other words around it, then skip it, don’t waste time!
