WHAT TO KNOW (ALAMIN MO)

LEARNNG COMPETENCY WITH CODE
● explains the dimensions of holistic health (physical, mental/ intellectual, emotional,
social, and moral-spiritual) H7GD-Ib-13
● analyzes the interplay among the health dimensions in developing holistic health -
H7GD-Ib-14
Holistic Health is a state of complete physical, mental, or intellectual, emotional,
social, moral, spiritual, and environmental well-being, and not merely the absence of disease
or infirmity.
Health is a resource for everyday life, not the object of living, and is a positive
concept of emphasizing social and personal resources as well as physical capabilities.

1. Physical health - it means how well your body functions. It is a state of well-being when all
internal and external body parts, organs, tissues, and cells can function properly as they are
supposed to function. It includes being physically fit, eating nutritiously, and getting adequate
rest and sleep.
2. Social health - refers to how well you get along with other people, how other people react,
and how you interact with social institutions.
3. Mental health - means being a lifelong learner by continuously wanting to learn new things
and improve one's skills. A mentally healthy person is open to new ideas and experiences that
can improve life, family, and environment.
4. Emotional health- involves understanding and liking yourself as well as accepting and
learning from your mistakes. It also means expressing your happiness, love, joy, and hope as
well your sadness, anger, stress, and fear in healthful productive ways.
5. Moral-spiritual health - means being at peace and in harmony with yourself and it refers to
your religion, principles, personal beliefs, values, and faith.
6. Environmental health - means the understanding of the effect to ourselves of the air, water,
and the land that surrounds us.

LET US REMEMBER (TANDAAN MO)
Overall good health and wellness are interdependent on six dimensions. Health
dimensions are like separate pieces that need to be fitted together to make meaning.
A healthy child is active at home and at school. He/she is active to do the household
routine like cleaning the house and the backyard. He/she has time to join with his/her parents
in prayers, attending masses, and worship activities. He/she is alert and participative in
classroom activities. He/she enjoys being with his/her friends, classmates, and other children
in the school.
Being healthy is much more than not being sick. Your health is made up of physical,
mental, social, moral-spiritual, and environmental resources that allow you to live a satisfying
and productive life. Optimal health indicates a high level of functioning and is often
characterized by vitality, a zest for life, and a sense of harmony with nature and humanity

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT DURING ADOLESCENCE

Name: Grade Level:

Section: Date:

WHAT TO KNOW (ALAMIN MO)

LEARNNG COMPETENCY WITH CODE:
Recognize changes in different aspects of growth that normally happen during
adolescence years. (H7GD-Id-e-16) (H7GD-Id-e-17) (H7GD-Id-e-18)
Adolescence is a time of growth spurts and pubertal changes. During this period,
adolescents may experience a growth spurt for several months followed by a period of very
slow growth; then they will have another growth spurt. Adolescents may experience pubertal
changes gradually. Several signs of sexual maturation may become visible at the same time.
Some adolescents may experience these signs of growth earlier or later than others. Pubertal
changes generally happen to girls between the ages of 10 to 11 and to boys 12 to 13 years of
age.
Changes that occur during Puberty as a result of hormonal changes, sexual and other
physical maturation occur during puberty. A gland in the brain, called the pituitary gland,
increases the secretion of a hormone called follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) as a child
approaches puberty. In girls, the FSH activates the ovaries to start producing estrogen. In
boys, the FSH causes the production of sperms. It is difficult to know exactly when puberty
will occur in boys. Changes occur, but they occur gradually and over a period of time, rather
than as a single event.

While male adolescents differ, the average ages when pubertal changes generally
happen are the following:
∙ 12 to 13 years old
o Start of puberty
o The first pubertal change: enlargement of the testicles 8
o Enlargement of the penis starts just about one year after the testicles begin enlarging

∙ 13.5 years old

o Appearance of pubic hair

∙ 14 years old
o Nocturnal emissions (or "wet dreams")

15 years old
o Growth of hair on the face and the armpit, voice changes, and acne appear Girls also experience
pubertal changes but these usually begin before boys of the same age.

9 – MAPEH Health Gr 7 Week 1-2

Each girl is different and may progress through these changes differently. The average ages when
these pubertal changes occur are the following:
∙ 10 to 11 years
o Start of puberty: The first pubertal change: development of the breast o Appearance of pubic hair:
shortly after breast development

∙12 years old

o Underarm hair

∙ 10 to 16.5 years old

o Menstrual period

WHAT TO KNOW (ALAMIN MO)

LEARNING COMPETENCY WITH CODE:

Explain the proper health appraisal procedures. H7GD-Ii-j-22

Demonstrate health appraisal procedures during adolescence in order to achieve
holistic health. H7GD-Ii-j-23

“Prevention is better than cure.”

Our goal is to attain a holistic health. It could be achieved through monitoring your
health status. Regular check-ups and screening tests are important to monitor health status.
The school health personnel perform these check-ups and screening tests from the
beginning onwards the end of the school year. As you go along, you will notice that the
diseases or health condition you experience or encounter can be prevented. There are
many concerns that need to be addressed but with the correct and adequate health
information, positive attitude, healthy lifestyle practices and desirable coping skills will
help in attaining and maintaining holistic health.

Health Appraisal and Screening Procedures

Health Appraisal are a series of procedures to assess or determine the health status of
a learner. Screening for blood pressure is added to the routine tests for height, weight,
vision, and hearing. Immunizations are also updated.

For girls, it is recommended to check your breasts for possible masses or lumps the
moment you start menstruating. You should do this monthly, specifically one week after
the onset of menstruation. You can do this while taking a shower or facing the mirror. This
breast self-examination (BSE) can help females check any abnormalities that might need
medical help. Remember, there are normal changes during and right before menstruation
so it is better to perform BSE after menstruation. Develop the habit of doing BSE
monthly.

How to examine your breast:

Lie down on your back and place your right arm

behind your head. Use the finger pads of the middle
fingers on your left hand to feel for lumps in the right
breast. Use overlapping dime-sized circular motions of
the fingers pads to feel the breast tissue.

12 – MAPEH Health Gr 7 Week 1-2

3. Move around the breast in an up and down
pattern starting at an imaginary line drawn
straight down your side from the underarm and
moving across the breast to the middle of the
chest bone (sternum or breastbone).

3. Repeat examination on your left breast, putting

your left arm behind your head and using the finger
pads of your hand to do the same.

4. While standing in front of a mirror with your

hands pressing firmly down on your hips, look at
your breasts for any changes in size, shape, contour,
or dimpling, or redness of the nipple or breast skin.

Scoliosis Screening
Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves to the side. It is an
abnormal lateral or side- to-side curvature of the spine. This condition
commonly develops during sudden brief of the growth of adolescents. It
affects girls more often. This condition can be corrected if treated early
before the bones have fully developed.

The following signs should be referred to a doctor for treatment:

One of the shoulder blades is more prominent.
The head is not aligned to the center of the pelvis.
A hip appears higher or is more prominent than the other.
The rib cage is uneven
The waist is uneven
The entire body is leaning to one side

The graphic organizer below shows the importance of health appraisal/screening test in
attaining holistic health.

MELCs: Identifies characteristics of arts and crafts in specific areas in Luzon (e.g., papier mache
[taka] from Paete, Ifugao wood sculpture [bul’ul], Cordillera jewelry and pottery, tattoo, and Ilocos weaving
and pottery [burnay], etc.). (A7EL-Ia-2)

Brief Discussion of the Lesson

Arts and crafts are a means by which we communicate views, ideas, and feelings through the use of
skills and imagination. Through arts and crafts, we learn to value and appreciate artifacts and images which
were made by our ancestors.
This lesson will help you understand the arts and crafts of Luzon, its elements and principles, and the
different aspects of its rich culture, traditions, and history handed down to us by our ancestors.
● The Bul’ul is a wooden sculpture that represents the rice granary spirits. It is used in rituals that are
performed to call the ancestors to protect their rice field from pestilence and to ask for an abundant harvest.
● Hagabi-it is a huge long bench carved out of one single piece of wood, whose seat rises in the middle
from either end.
● Banaue Rice- Terraces- Famous work of art of Ifugao. The Ifugaos built them over a period of centuries
by carving terraces into the mountainsides and reinforcing each level with stone walls.
One of their finest products is their textiles, which is characterized by red stripes and white, yellow
and black geometrical patterns. The southern Kalinga women wear the wrap-around skirt or tapis called
kain, which reaches below the knee. It is worn below the abdomen, and when they walk, one of the thighs is
exposed.
●Tattooing is another form of art of Kalingas. Because it usually covers the chest and the arms, it may be
considered as clothing and decoration. It also signifies a rite of passage from youth to adulthood, a mark of
heroism, and bravery and one’s status in the community.
●The Labba is a bowl-shaped basket made from rattan, with sizes that vary from 20-150cm in diameter.
●The Tingguians weave textiles for clothes and blankets. They are noted for their white textiles with
horizontal stripes found in the edges (like those in the bankuo or wrap-around skirt) or vertical stripes in the
center (like those found in the balwasi or female blouse).

WHAT TO KNOW (ALAMIN MO)

MELCs: Incorporate the design, form, and spirit of highland/lowland artifacts and objects in one’s
creation. (A7PL-Ih-3)

Brief Discussion of the lesson

Arts and crafts are important means of expression, which communicate views, ideas, and feelings
through the use of skills and imagination. They are part of our daily lives and are found everywhere.

History tells us that even before the Spaniards came to our country, arts already existed and were used by
our ancestors as a part of their everyday lives.

Folk artists use different materials to create art works. These materials are called mediums. Some of
the media that artists use in art creation are crayons, colored markers, clay, and other indigenous materials.
Folk artists consider the elements of design such as line, color, texture, value space, shape, and form in
planning their art creation. They also combine visual elements by using principle designs. Like the
following:

1. Geometric Lines – different straight or curved lines.

2. Geometric Shapes- squares, triangles, rectangles, ovals, hexagons, etc.

3. Repeated Designs- one pattern or motif or color repeated over a space.

4. Alternating Designs- two or more patterns, motif or color alternated.

5. Graduated Designs- a motif or pattern that is repeated but in graduated size from small to big, or if it is
color, from light to dark.

6. Symmetrical balance- both sides of the work are balanced.

7. Asymmetrical balance-when one side of the composition is not identical to the other side.

MELCs: Trace the external (foreign) and internal (indigenous) influences reflected in the design of
artwork and in the making of a craft or artifact. (A7PL-Ih4)

Brief Discussion of the lesson

The arts and crafts of Luzon depict the rich culture and traditions of the Filipinos. The textiles
produced in every province signify their culture based on how they were made. The materials, the
techniques, and the symbols used in these arts and crafts have their own cultural and traditional significance.

The Ivatans are the people living in the Batanes Group of Islands. The Ivatan women used Vakul,
headgear, while the men wore soot, a raincoat, which are made up of woven fibers of vuyavuy,palm-a plant
similar to coconut. The Ifugaos make the lingling-o, which symbolizes fertility. They carve bul’ul, a
representation of their ancestor spirits, in their rituals. They practice tattooing as a part of their rich culture
and traditions. Another form of sculpture tradition in Luzon is the ukit of Laguna. Pottery is also found in the
arts and crafts of Luzon, particularly the Burnay of Ilocos. Architectures of the different provinces,
especially the churches, display the rich cultural heritage of the Spanish colonial period. Luzon is also
known for its festivals and celebrations that feature the different arts of the provinces- the kiping of Pahiyas
in Quezon, the higantes of Rizal, the singkaban of Bulacan and the lanterns of Pampanga. The prevalence of
these arts and crafts in contemporary times reveals our respect and appreciation for our traditions.

WHAT TO KNOW (ALAMIN MO)

MELCs: Creates crafts that can be locally assembled with local materials, guided by local traditional
techniques (e.g., habi, lilip, etc). A7PR-Ice-1
Brief Discussion of the lesson

Art is part of the life of the indigenous people of the Philippines. This is shown in the things that
they used every day which are rich in traditional colors and patterns. These art forms reflect their tribal
background.

When our forefathers first set foot on our country, they made use of the available materials for their
needs. They used coconut fronds (leaves) as roofs and walls for their huts. They used hardwoods and
timbers for posts. They also used coconut fronds (leaves) as roofs and walls for their huts. For their floors,
they flattened bamboo slices. The things they used at home are also made of native materials. They used
bamboo tube for cooking utensils and rattan or nito for baskets. Later on, they used durable materials that
added some refinements on their crafts. They improved their craftsmanship either from their own traditional
ways or from borrowing techniques used by other tribes.

These arts and crafts employ the different elements of art: line, color, shape and texture.

MUSIC OF LOWLANDS OF LUZON
(Music of the Lowlands of Luzon and Elements of Music of the lowlands of Luzon)

Name: __________________________ Section:______________

Grade Level: ____________________ Date: ________________

WHAT TO KNOW (ALAMIN MO)

LEARNING COMPETENCY WITH CODE
● Describes the musical characteristics of representative music selections from the
lowlands of Luzon after listening. (MU7LU-Ia-1)
● Analyzes the musical elements of some Lowland vocal and instrumental music
selections (MU7LU Ia-2)

Music is one of the greatest creations of man. Creativity in the pure and undiluted form is the
true definition of Music. Music is an important part of our life as it is a way of expressing our
feelings as well as emotions.
Some people consider music as a way to escape from the pains of life. It gives you relief and
allows you to reduce the stress. Music is a powerful therapy that will calm you. Furthermore, it
develops the mind and boosts your self-confidence. Music plays a more important role in our life
than just being a source of entertainment.

Folk songs in the lowlands of Luzon have Spanish and other European influences. They are
written by the folk and are sung based on the livelihood of the community like farming, fishery, and
putting the baby to sleep.

The people created melodic chants and indigenous instruments based on the materials
available where they lived. The folk songs of Luzon lowlands are performed in their native
languages such as Ilocano, Pangasinense, Kapampangan, Tagalog, Bicolano, and others.

Characteristics of folk songs are as follows:

● Originally passed down orally to the family, and to the other members of the community
●Sung in their own dialect
● Begins in one key and ends in the same key
● Composers and lyricist are usually unknown
● Mood can be sentimental, playful and humorous
● Concepts are based on nature or people’s work, tradition, culture
● Short and simple
● Either in duple meter 2/4, triple meter 3/4, or quadruple meter 4/4
The music for liturgy and devotional music of the Lowlands of Luzon reflects the
impact of Spanish colonization which lasted for almost three centuries, and how the introduction
of Christianity affected the religious practices of the ethno-linguistic groups. Efforts from the
youth and education sector are joining forces in maintaining these cultural traditions through the
Hispanic-influenced music which is undergoing a transformation into present-day versions.
The secular music of the Lowlands of Luzon reflects the impact of the Spanish
colonization in the country. The music bears influences of Spanish culture and serves as
reflections of that era, as seen in the messages of the songs. These songs, mostly about the love
of a man for a woman, have a deeper meaning for the Filipinos at that time. The man’s longing
for the love of a woman is transformed into the country’s love and longing for the free
Philippines, as embodied in the woman.

Elements of Music

RHYTHM - Is the pattern of regular or irregular pulses caused in music by the

occurrence of strong and weak melodic and harmonic beats and the essential ingredient in
all music. You can mix together any sounds you want, but if there is no underlying rhythm to
the sounds, there is no music. When you tap your foot to the music, you are "keeping the
beat" or following the structural rhythmic pulse of the music. There are several important
aspects of rhythm:

TEMPO is the speed of the beat.

TIME SIGNATURE (also known as meter signature, metre signature, or measure

signature) is a notational convention used in Western musical notation to specify how many
beats (pulses) are contained in each measure (bar), and which note value is equivalent to a
beat. A time signature tells you how the music is to be counted. The time signature is
written at the beginning of the staff after the clef and key signature. Time signatures consist
of two numbers written like a fraction. The top number of the time signature tells you how
many beats to count.

PITCH - is the quality that makes it possible to judge sounds as "higher" and "lower"
in the sense associated with musical melodies.

DYNAMICS - All musical aspects relating to the relative loudness (or quietness) of
music fall under the general element of DYNAMICS. The terms used to describe dynamic
levels are often in Italian:
pianississimo [ppp] = (very, very quiet or soft)
pianissimo [pp] = (very quiet or soft)
piano [p] = (quiet or soft)
mezzo-piano [mp] = (moderately quiet or soft)
mezzo-forte [mf ] = (moderately loud)
forte [f ] = (loud)
fortissimo [ff ] = (very loud)
fortississimo [fff ] = (very, very loud)
Other basic terms relating to Dynamics are:
Crescendo: gradually getting LOUDER
Diminuendo (or decrescendo) : gradually getting QUIETER
ACCENT - “punching a note harder” or” leaning into a note” to emphasize it.
TIMBRE (or tone color) - refers to the quality of sound that distinguishes one
instrument from another. It is what makes a particular musical instrument or human voice
have a different sound from another, even when they play or sing the same note. For
instance, it is the difference in sound between a guitar and a piano playing the same note at
the same volume. There are basically six kinds of vocal registers that are used for describing
the vocal medium:

Female Vocal Range: Soprano, Alto

Male Vocal Range: Tenor, Bass, Baritone

LEARNNG COMPETENCY WITH CODE
● Explores ways of producing sounds on a variety of sources that is similar to the instruments
being studied. (MU7LU-I-b-f-4)
● Performs music from Luzon lowlands with own accompaniment. (MU7LU-Ia-h-7)

Background Information for Learners

The music of the lowlands of Luzon is composed of Vocal and Instrumental music,
which varies in every province of Luzon. The lowlands are composed mostly of farmers,
fishermen, artisans, vendors and traders, and common people. They have a deep faith in God,
whom they serve with sincerity and devotion. Their key celebrations are fiestas or festivals
for thanksgiving of good harvest, and to honor Jesus Christ, Santo Niño, Virgin Mary and
patron saints of the Catholic Church.
Through various music used for liturgy, devotion, and secular purposes, one will
discover how people of the lowlands express their feelings, history, and religious beliefs.

Liturgical music originated as a part of a religious ceremony that has

several traditions, both ancient and modern. Liturgical music is well known as a
part of Catholic Mass.
"Mass" is one of the names by which the sacrament of the Eucharist is
commonly called in the Roman Catholic Church. The term "Mass" is derived from
the Late Latin word missa (dismissal), a word used in the concluding formula of
Mass in Latin.

A devotional song is a hymn that accompanies religious observances and rituals.

In Eastern and Near- Eastern religions, devotionals can function as communion
prayer and meditation.
