DIZON, CHARLES ANGELO Q.

M-A2 SELF HEALING CONCRETE

1.

It states that cracks occurred due to insufficient or a surplus in terms of strength

and stress there is an erected building or infrastructures. The determinant whether a

bacteria would survive, one would have to take into consideration their tolerance inside

an alkaline environment. Simply, repetitively, concrete is still considered to be a

sufficing material to get rid of the compressive load until limit is met. The cracks,

permeable portions are prone to high-cost when maintenance is applied.

2.

The spores, a thick-walled bacteria, will be an aid to any cracks forming, healing

the dehydrated which can break apart some parts. B. sphaericus resulted to be a cause

of human's mild eye and skin irritation when come in contact with it. Test tube has a

range from 4 to 12, bacterial growth will obey its nutrients capacity-intake through this

method. He meant that self-healing concrete, was literally by the word per se, an

organic exists in a concrete (eg. bacteria) in order for it to sustain itself, and upgrade

whether fractures may emerge.

3.
He said that “Bacteria repair the cracks in concrete by producing the calcium

carbonate crystal which block the cracks and repair it.” He insisted this matter, as this

underwent many trials, and truthfully proven to be effective by qualitative statistics.

4.

To put it in a nutshell, the principle is to aim for a low-cost which equates to a

more exercise in its effectivity. The development of calcium carbonate crystal decreases

the water permeability by decreasing the width of cracks from 0.5 mm to 0.35 mm;

though there is a thin fine decision, if one were to choose this, but still a guaranteed lab

tests hold this thing to a pinnacle of success. Certain numerical figures mentioned in the

article fight off the conventional adage of high strength in concrete to support its

durability, as opposed to the main topic which is ingesting bacteria inside of it.

Personally, in my humble opinion, taking into account all the positive information

stated in the article, I might have disagreed with the author’s target; as inserting a

bacteria inside concrete matrices, may lead to unsustainable life along with extreme

weather, such as high alkalinity (being pH up to 13.), also the heat present on an on-

going manufacturing process, and at last is the inadequate supply oxygen that can

practically put the bacteria to almost a tiresome workability
