Technical Justification

Query:
QP have commented that casting alloy 625 (Cw6MC) is not listed in ASME B16.34.
Hence PT rating shall be verified. Hence instead of cast form vendor to offer Forge
form

SNY Reply:

ASME B16 Standards Committee has issued, B16 Cases to address the needs for rules on
materials and constructions not covered by existing B16 standards (like B16.34 Standard).

Code Case 2:
Case 2, approved on February 13, 2014, provide rules for use of unlisted materials for
construction of ASME B16.34 valves.

ASTM A494 CW6MC grade has been listed in ASME Section II, Materials, Part B (Non-Ferrous
Material Specification)

Hence ASTM A494 CW6MC grade has been acceptable as per Code Case 2

As commented by QP on CGCN valve TBE, casting alloy 625 as offered by vendor is

not acceptable to QP instead of Forged alloy 624 or CS+ alloy 625 clad/LTCS +
alloy 624 clad.

SNY has quoted as follows

1. Gate 6” – Cast alloy as per ASTM A494 CW6MC offered in place Forged alloy 625
2. Gate 10” – Cast alloy as per ASTM A494 CW6MC offered in place of CS+ alloy 625
cladding
3. Swing Check Valve 8” & 10” – Cast alloy as per ASTM A494 CW6MC offered in place of
LTCS+ alloy 625 cladding
4. Dual Plate Check Valve 8” - Cast alloy as per ASTM A494 CW6MC offered in place of
CS+ alloy 625 cladding
5. Swing Check Valve 4” & 6” - Cast alloy as per ASTM A494 CW6MC offered in place
Forged alloy 625

As per MESC 77 313, The CRA weld overlay cladding applies to the entire wetted area of the
valve.

1. The internal wetted areas are not uniform in Gate, Swing and Dual plate check. Hence
it is not possible to do cladding and machining after cladding in these valve type.
Instead SNY, has offered equivalent cast alloy form as per ASTM A494 CW6MC

2. Generally, the cast form is being used in all these valve type (Gate, Swing check and
Dual plate). Offering forged alloy 625 (closed die forging form) on these sizes are not
economical considering the order lot and delivery lead time.
