The Method

The Challenge
Here’s the step in which we create the necessity. That means identifying
the expressions you already know and how much you still don’t
understand – and with that, creating the purpose for your learning. This
step will help you have a more clear perception of your evolution as you
navigate through the course.

The Bridge
It is in this step that the necessity created at the Challenge will turn into
knowledge. In other words, all the questions you had before will become
answers. In a class, for example, it is when the teacher presents and
explains the content.

The Great Leap

It’s time to consolidate the knowledge, reaching a higher level of
comprehension. In the Great Leap, you’ll review what you’ve just learned,
compare the spelling and the pronunciation, and put it all into practice!

The Magic
Memorization time! The Magic is the step where you will internalize
everything you’ve learned, using an unbelievably simple and effective
memorization tool: the Memhack! You won’t forget a single word!
dialogue

plans
and
ideas

Everyone has their own reason why they are studying English. Do
you want to travel the world? Are you trying to boost your career by
mastering a foreign language? Or do you simply want to watch your
favorite movies without subtitles? Plans and ideas are very personal,
and they’re also the source of your inspiration and persistence. In
this lesson, we’re going to hear a couple of friends talking about their
plans and the opportunities they see for themselves in the future!

The dialogue
A:
Hey Julia, it looks like you’re on cloud nine! I suppose you have some
good news to share?

B:
Do you remember that interview I told you about? The one I was, like,
super anxious about?

A:
I do. You were kind of afraid that your English wasn’t up to par, right?
Let me guess… you nailed it, didn’t you?

B:
I absolutely did! I started studying the language just because I wanted
to travel, meet people and maybe watch some movies in English… I had
no idea that knowing English would change my life like this!

A:
Told you so! I knew you had it in you. Now tell me, are you going to
accept the job offer?

B:
Definitely!

A:
I’m stoked for you!

EXPANDING HORIZONS
Ways to say someone is very happy
I’m on cloud nine!

I’m ecstatic!

I’m jubilant!

I’m walking on air!

I’m stoked!

The Simple Past

In this conversation, we can see many verbs in the Simple Past form. Let’s review
this structure that we use to talk about finished actions in the past!

AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES
To make affirmative sentences using the Simple Past, we just need to change the
main verb. If it is regular, we add -ED:

want → wanted

start → started

play → played

need → needed

E N G L I S H W I T H F LU E N CY ACA D E M Y

Special cases:
1. If the verb ends with an E, we just add -D:

love → loved

hate → hated

2. If the verb ends with a consonant + Y, we change the Y for -IED:

study → studied

cry → cried

3. If the verb ends with a consonant + vowel + consonant, we double

the last consonant:

stop → stopped

shop → shopped

* That happens to most verbs, but not all of them. Some verbs that don’t
follow this rule: allow, chew, listen, open, visit.

If it is irregular, well, we need to memorize the past form! Take a look at some super
common irregular verbs:

do → did

make → made

tell → told

go → went

eat → ate

get → got

have → had

know → knew

think → thought

set → set

Examples:

I needed to stay home last night.

Sarah made new friends in Costa Rica.

They went to California for the holidays.

Quick tip! How to remember which verbs are irregular? Most of them describe
a “primitive activity” – things we used to do thousands of years ago.

NEGATIVE SENTENCES
To make negative sentences, we need to remember 2 things:

→ We need to use the auxiliary DID + NOT.

The contraction of DID NOT is DIDN’T, and this is super common!

→ The main verb goes in the base form.

Look at the same examples, but in the negative form:

I didn’t need to stay home last night.

Sarah didn’t make new friends in Costa Rica.

They didn’t go to California for the holidays.

QUESTIONS
To ask questions in English, it’s not just about the intonation, as it is in some languages.
We need the auxiliary, and we always invert the order: the auxiliary goes in front of the
subject. Remember, the auxiliary here is DID.

Let’s look at the same examples, but as questions now:

Did you need to stay home last night?

Did Sarah make new friends in Costa Rica?

Did they go to California for the holidays?

TAG QUESTIONS
Tag questions are a common way to ask for confirmation from the other person;
it is basically the same thing as the “right?” that people say. The example in the
conversation is:

You nailed it, didn’t you?

Notice that the sentence is affirmative, so the little question at the end is negative.
The opposite is true:

You didn’t nail it, did you?

Let’s see another example:

They prepared dinner, didn’t they?

They didn’t prepare dinner, did they?

In this class you learned many new expressions, such as “to be on cloud nine”,
“up to par” and “nailed it”. You also learned about structures and pronunciation
of English. We hope you enjoyed it! Keep up the good work! See you soon!

Study
Plan
1 The first step is to read the dialogue many times – and rewatch the
class if necessary – to understand all the vocabulary and structures
until you can read and understand everything easily.

2 The second step is to read and listen to the dialogue at the same
time, many times, so that you can get used to pronunciation patterns
and memorize them.

3 The third step is: read, listen and repeat. Don’t be shy: speak out
loud! It’s important to listen to your own voice speaking English! So
repeat after the sentences of the dialogue and have fun along the
way!

4
The fourth and most important step is the practice: memorize all the
sentences once and for all using Memhack!
