How do language learners use non-verbal expressions when they negotiate

communicative skills?

Language learners utilize non-verbal expressions in communicating through

symbolism and using non-verbal cues for expressions and substitute for simple words
such as answering yes or no through nodding their head or showing disagreement
through a simple sigh or swaying your head side to side. Most people use non-verbal
expression to communicate on a daily basis as there is very little need of understanding
the language of the other person you are talking to with non-verbal expressions.
Language learners are still not used to the proper diction of words, common terms such
as metaphors, and first and foremost, the fundamentals of the language they are
learning. Although we learn how to speak and write the language, it is not easy to
practice using it and sometimes get confusing due to complicated words and
terminologies that are very unfamiliar but non-verbal expression is something that is
common to all language and can be used to express ideas without much barrier for both
the speaker and listener. Verbal communication utilizes words to convey your ideas and
thoughts which will then be deciphered by the listener and he/she will in turn create a
feedback for your message, that is the basic communication process. In non-verbal
communication, exchanging expressions takes less time and is very simple and
straightforward which is very useful for someone who is not familiar with a particular
language.

2. How does the language instructor respond to learners’ non-verbal responses and utilize
non-verbal
expressions in his/her instruction?

The instructor will use non-verbal language to respond as it is more effective and
more reliable for communicating with the language learners who are still learning and
are not used to speaking the language. It also has been proved through various
researches that using non-verbal expressions are useful and has a positive impact for
students and teachers in communicating in their classes. Some other patterns were
utilized in nonverbal communication. Students' learning and academic achievement have
been aided by emotive, teamwork, supportive, innovative, purposeful, and balanced
communication using speech, body, and graphics. The importance of teachers paying
attention to students' nonverbal behaviors and planning the curriculum around their
mood and readiness has been underlined. If the listener of a message is torn between
two contradictory verbal and nonverbal messages, logic demands that we urge him
toward the nonverbal message and advise him to pay more attention to non-verbal than
verbal. Because non-verbal communication is highly reliable in the communication
process, if the recipient of a message is torn between two contradictory verbal and
nonverbal messages, logic dictates that we push him toward the non-verbal message
and ask him to pay more attention to non-verbal than verbal cues because non-verbal
cues frequently reveal the sender's intention and reflect his/her emotional reactions.
