In most thesauruses, the term contemporary is synonymous with the terms

present, up-to-date, existing, and modern. We tend to equate being contemporary
with being modern; that is, everything that is contemporary is updated and of
advanced technology.
This also sometimes happens in the world of art. Present or new works of
art are often called modern art, contrary to those old, traditional, or conservative
arts. However, we should now be aware that these two technically refer to
different art periods. Although they could share some characteristics and
influences, there is agreement among scholars that Modern Art is not necessarily
the same as Contemporary Art.
In the Philippines, for example, some refer to the artworks of the “13
Moderns” as contemporary art, based on the
delineation from the second half of the 20th
century till the 21st century. Among the 13
Moderns is Carlos V. Francisco, popularly known
as ‘Botong’, a Philippine National Artist for Visual
Arts. He was active until the late 1960’s. At that
time it was common to call their paintings as
contemporary art. At present, some groups
refrain from using ‘contemporary’ and instead
refer to the group’s work as ‘modern art’. This is
because Contemporary Art is more often referred
to as the art of the present time, taking from the root ‘con tempore’, with the
times.

Exercise: Study the 21st century architectural

design shown in the picture.
1. How does it differ from buildings built in
other periods that you have seen either
physically or on TV and other media? Are
there any similarities too?
2. What is your personal impression of Photo by AlbertoSandrin on pixabay
contemporary or 21st century architectural design?
