Module 2.1 – Writing Sentences using Variables

MODULE 2
1.2
– Speaking Mathematically

In analyzing mathematical sentences such as those of worded
problems, we make use of variables as placeholders to the missing
values. The advantage of using variables is that it allows you to give
temporary name to what you are seeking so that you can perform
concrete computations with it to help discover its possible values.

2. Given any real number, its square is nonnegative.

We can rewrite this as:

Given any real number r, r2 is nonnegative.
For any real number r, r2 ≥0.
For all real numbers r, r2 ≥0.

– says that if one thing is true then some other thing also has to be
true.

If 378 is divisible by 18, then 378 is divisible by 6.

that there is at least one thing for which the property is true.

- a universal conditional statement contains some variation of the

words “for all” and a conditional statement contains version of the
words “if-then”. A universal conditional statement is a statement that
is both universal and conditional.

• For all animals x, if x is a dog, then x is a
mammal.
• For all polygons P, if P has three sides, then P is a triangle.

MODULE 2
1.2
– Speaking Mathematically

- a universal existential statement is a statement that is universal

because its first part says that a certain property is true for all objects
of a given type, and it is existential because its second part asserts the
existence of something.

• Every real number has an additive inverse
• All real numbers have additive inverse.
• For all real numbers r, there is an additive inverse for r.
• For all real numbers r, there is a real numbers such that s is an additive inverse for r.
