6 TAIL ROTOR FAILURES

6.1 Tail Rotor Drive Failures

Loss of the tail rotor in power-on flight results in a yaw movement to

the left ; the extent of such rotation will depend on the power and
speed configuration at the time the failure occurs.

6.1.1 Failures of the Tail Rotor in Hover or at Low Speed

- I.G.E. : set the twist grip to the idle detent and cushion touchdown
by pulling the collective pitch lever.
- O.G.E. : reduce collective pitch moderately, to reduce yaw torque,
and simultaneously start to increase speed.

6.1.2 Failures in Forward Flight

- In forward flight reduce the power as much as possible and maintain

forward speed (weathercock effect), select a suitable landing area
for a steep approach at a power enabling a reasonably coordinated
flight.
- On final approach, shut down the engine and make an autorotative
landing at the lowest possible speed at touchdown.

6.2 Tail Rotor Control Failure

WARNING : WHEN AIRSPEED IS LESS THAN 20 KT (37 KM/H) AND PARTICULARLY R

NEAR TO THE GROUND, GO-AROUND MAY BE IMPOSSIBLE DUE TO LOSS R
OF THE VERTICAL FIN EFFICIENCY. R

- Set IAS 70 knots (130 km/h), in level flight.

- Press the "HYD TEST" (TEST HYDR) push-button (this cuts off hydraulic
power to the yaw servocontrol and depressurizes the load-compensating
servo accumulator). After 5 seconds, reset the test button to the
normal position.
- Make a shallow approach to a clear landing area with a slight side
slip to the left. Perform a run-on landing ; the side slip will be
reduced progressively as power is applied.

NOTE : Landing is made easier with a RH wind component. R

7 SERVO TRANSPARENCY

Self-correcting, the phenomenon will induce an un-commanded right cyclic

load and an associated collective down reaction. However, even if the
transparency feedback loads are controllable, immediate action is required
to relieve the feedback loads:
- Reduce the severity of the maneuver,
- Follow the aircraft's natural reaction,
- Let the collective pitch decrease naturally (avoid low pitch) and
smoothly counteract the right cyclic motion.

Transparency will disappear as soon as excessive loads are relieved.

3.3 Failures of Ng - Torque - t4 indicators R

In the event of failure of a first limitation calculation parameter, the

FLI is no longer displayed. The Ng, torque, t4 indicators are R
displayed instead.
A failure message is displayed (Refer to § 3.2).

Ng indicator failure R

In the event of an indicator failure, do not exceed the maximum

authorized torque value, and maintain the t4 temperature value below
810°C.

Torquemeter failure

In the event of a torquemeter failure, do not allow the engine speed to

exceed the Ng (%) limits in the following table :

Ng and torquemeter indications failure R

Governing failure (red GOV warning) can also cause loss of Ng and torque R
indications.

The VEMD switches to 3-parameter mode with only t4 valid and Ng numeric.
Comply with the limitations in the above table, substituting the
ΔNg = -4 limit with a t4 limit of 810°C. R

t4 indicator failure

- Comply with the Ng limitations (refer to "LIMITATIONS" SECTION).

- Switch off the heating system.
- Do not attempt to start the engine.

NOTE : If in doubt concerning the values of parameters to be complied

with following failure of one or more parameters, the "2 screen
failure" procedure can always be applied.

WARNING-CAUTION-ADVISORY PANEL AND AURAL WARNING

1 AURAL WARNING

Aural warnings are operative only if the HORN (KLAXON) push-button is

pushed in.
When this push-button is out, the HORN (KLAXON) light of the warning
caution advisory panel is ON.

1.1 Gong

The gong sounds each time a red warning light illuminates.

1.2 Continuous tone

Two continuous tone can be heard :

- when NR is below 360 rpm (310 Hz tone),

- when maximum take-off limitations are exceeded for more than 1.5
seconds or immediately when transient power limitations are R
exceeded (285 Hz tone). R

For aircraft fitted with VEMD post Mod 07 3195.

Two continuous tones can be heard :
- when NR is below 360 rpm (310 Hz tone),
- when maximum take-off limitations are exceeded for more than
1.5 seconds or immediately when transient power limitations
are or will be exceeded during fast power increase(285 Hz tone).

1.2.1 Reduce collective pitch to maintain NR in green arc or power within

limitations.

1.2.2 Check engine parameters.

When the twist grip is in the FLIGHT detent (VOL) low NR can
logically only occur following an engine failure. Apply collective
pitch very gradually.

1.3 Intermittent tone

An intermittent tone (310 Hz) is heard when NR is above 410 rpm.

Slightly increase collective pitch in order to avoid exceeding 430 rpm.

6 TAKEOFF

CAUTION: USE OF HEATING* AND DEMISTING IS FORBIDDEN ABOVE ENGINE MAXIMUM

CONTINUOUS RATING (Ng or t4)

Take off by gradually increasing the collective pitch and maintain hover,
head into wind, at a height of about 5 ft (1.5m).
Check that the engine and transmission monitoring instruments are within
their normal operating ranges.
For transition from hover, increase speed without increasing the power
demand (power required for hover IGE) and without climbing until IAS is
40 kt (74 km/h).

NOTE: The bleed valve flag disappears when the valve closes.
The bleed valve is normally open when the engine is shut down,
during starting and at low power.

SECTION 4.2

ENGINE HEALTH CHECK

1 BEFORE TAKEOFF

In HIGE at 5 ft and before initiating forward flight, pull the collective

pitch lever slightly to ensure that the Ng can increase by at least 1%,
without exceeding the takeoff power +1% limit.

2 ENGINE HEALTH CHECK PROCEDURE

The engine health check consists in checking :

- the power margin (torque margin) check and
- the t4 margin check.
Checking can be performed by using the VEMD procedure (see paragraph 2.1)
or the manually recorded parameters procedure (see paragraph 2.2).

2.1 VEMD procedure

In stabilized level flight at a power rating close to MCP, perform an

engine power check by the VEMD with Hp < 12000 ft (3657m), heating and
demisting systems on "OFF".
Read the results :
- The engine health check is satisfactory if:
. the "TRQ MARGIN" value is positive <--> "GOOD" displayed,
and
. the "T4 MARGIN" value is negative <--> "GOOD" displayed R

2.2 Manual procedure

In stabilized level flight at a power rating close to MCP, record the

following parameters : Tq, Ng, NR, Hp, OAT and t4. Refer to the
ENGINE POWER CHECK chart(figure 1) and the t4 CHECK chart (figure 2).
Use the chart in the direction shown by the arrows in the example.

FLIGHT MANUAL

- The engine health check is satisfactory if:

. the point P is located within the CORRECT area on the
ENGINE POWER CHECK chart <--> positive torque margin,
and
. the point T is located within the CORRECT area on the
t4 CHECK chart <--> negative t4 margin (*).

(*)If the point T is located within the INCORRECT, area, calculate

the torque margin and t4 margin values as indicated below, then
calculate the corrected t4 margin as per paragraph 2.3.
If the corrected t4 margin is negative, the result is acceptable.

Torque margin calculation

- Mark the point P on the ENGINE POWER CHECK chart according to the
recorded parameters.
- Mark the point P' on the separation line between the CORRECT and
INCORRECT zones according to the recorded Ng and OAT values. Then
carry over to the torque scale according to the recorded Nr and Hp
values.
- The torque margin is given by the torque value difference P-P' measured
on the torque scale.

t4 margin calculation

- Mark the point T on the t4 CHECK chart according to the recorded

parameters.
- Mark the point T' on the separation line between the CORRECT and
INCORRECT zones according to the recorded Ng and OAT values. Carry over
to the t4 scale according to the recorded Hp value.
- The t4 margin is given by the t4 value difference T'-T measured on the
t4 temperature scale on the LH side.

2.3 Corrected t4 margin calculation

NOTE : This correction applies only if the t4 margin (before correction),

indicated on the VEMD (Pre MOD 07-3354) or calculated manually, R
is less than +35°C. If the t4 margin is greater than +35°C, R
the engine state is considered to be unsatisfactory. R
Find the relevant correction factor in the table (Hp, OAT) below.

| OAT | -40°C | -20°C | O°C | 20°C | 40°C |

| | | | | | |
| Hp (ft) | | | | | |
| 0 | -2.5 | -2.5 | -2.5 | -2.5 | -2.5 |
