CASE 2
Luis is 7 years old and is enrolled in the First Year of Primary School. He
has a diagnosis of ASD, with an associated intellectual disability
(individualized evaluation through Wechsler scales, IQ = 65). Luis spends
most of his time alone during breaks. He plays in a very routinely way (he
does not play with toys, but he likes to put them online). Luis does not like
changes at all. He feels worried and frustrated when something changes,
showing aggressive and anxious reactions when changes in plans, routines
or ways of working happen. His toys, clothes and stuff must be always at
the same place.
Luis also has a slight language development delay. He is able to speak and
communicate, but in a very basic way (he can express some desires and
follow easy instructions with difficulties). His expressive and
comprehensive language is still a little bit limited. He also presents some
echolalias. The use of visual symbols and images work very well with Luis,
who relies on them to understand daily situations and even more complex
procedures related to school assignments or social conventions (providing
him with the specific steps to perform a task, clues for the exam,
classroom rules always visible, clues about who to behave... all of these
work very well). The emotional language and recognition of emotions is
also very limited. Luis is not able to recognize or express his emotions
properly, which leads to anxiety, anger, and, sometimes, aggressive
behavior. When he gets nervous, he runs on tiptoe flapping his hands
(stereotypies). He has constant fights with his peers, as he does not
understand others´ intentions and/or emotional states.
When playing with other children, which is not frequent and, sometimes,
"forced", the interactions are not very fluid. Luis shows little interest to
share the activities with others. He refuses hugs and physical approaches
from the rest of the children. He has troubles understanding and following
the rules of the game. He lacks the imaginative capacity necessary to
participate in some games and dynamics, which makes it more difficult to
be integrated in a group. As for its psychomotor development, it is normal.
Taking into account these characteristics, answer the following questions:
1. Most of the behaviors shown by Luis are related to autistic spectrum
disorder, which is characterized by the following groups of symptoms:

your intervention as teacher.

Main condition (ASD), but there is a disorder that accompany the main
disorders and puts some obstacles for intervention. That is the associated
condition.
