CASE 1
Marco is 10 years old and lives with his mother, Emma; his father, Nicolás;
and his younger brother Jorge, who is 7 years old. Emma works at a local
library and Nicolás is an accountant. Marcos attends 4th grade of Primary
School. His parents are worried because he has problems finishing his
schoolwork and, in this semester, Marco is at risk of failing 3 subjects.
Marco has never repeated a course, although he has always showed
problems at school. He has difficulties in the relations with his group of
friends, and he is often involved in discussions and fights during breaks.
As a positive aspect, Marco´s teacher says that he is very good at sports,
and that, when his is interested in something, he can work quite well.
However, his behavior in class is not adequate. He is unable to stay
seated, moves around the class and gets up about 4 or 5 times in an hour.
Marco asks for permission to go to the bathroom many times during the
morning (most of them unjustified). This sort of behavior disrupts the
dynamic of the classroom. On the other hand, Marco is a very sociable
boy, but his attempts to interact with others are a little bit abrupt, so his
peers tend to reject him. It is very frequent that Marco gets into the
conversations of others, and does not respect the rules of the game. His
written work is careless, and he makes many mistakes for not paying
attention to the details, especially in writing. Usually, he does not finish
the tasks, or does not answer all the question in the exam. He refuses
doing activities that involve a sustained effort. Punishment does not work
very well with Marco, who has started showing important anger
outbursts.
