Consciously, he wants to be a visionary, supportive and enabling leader.
However, unconscious drives of domination and competitiveness are undermining his
leadership skills and leading to attrition.
Why is this so?
He is a star performer. Hence, competitiveness and expertise are ingrained in him. His
expertise and the desire to use resources efficiently make him authoritarian. But as a leader he
needs to give people the space to develop. The paradox is that people are promoted to
leadership positions for using resources efficiently (exploitation) but as leaders they have to
allow people slack to explore.
How to do that?
Self-awareness
Self-control
- Develop processes rather than relying over personal diktat.
