What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the nature of Dressmaking/Tailoring. The scope of this module permits it to
be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the
diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.

After going through this module, you are expected to:


1. identify body measurements needed in dressmaking and tailoring;
2. demonstrate accurate reading measurements;
3. take accurate client’s body measurements; and
4. apply and observe standard in taking body measurements.

This Module is an exploratory and introductory course on Dressmaking
and/or Tailoring which leads you to Dressmaking/Tailoring National Certificate
Level II (NC II). It covers a competency on taking accurate body measurements.

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will help you in
guiding the learners. The following are information that
would lead to the activities and assessment. Some activities
may need your own discretion upon checking, or you may
use rubric of provided. Please review the activities and
answer keys, and amend if necessary.

Direction: Our next lesson is about taking body measurements. In order to measure
you’ll need measuring tools/devices. List down dressmaking measuring
tools/devices available in your home.

What is It

Two systems of measurement are utilized in taking body measurements.


These are the English and Metric system. The English system’s basic unit is in
inches while Metric is in centimeters. Can you name/read the lines in a centimeter?
How about in an inch?

A centimeter has 10 equal parts.
1. The first line is 1 millimeter.
2. Second line is 2 millimeters.
3. Third line is 3 millimeters.
4. Fourth line is 4 millimeters.
5. Fifth line is 5 millimeters.
6. Sixth line is 6 millimeters.
7. Seventh line is 7 millimeters.
8. Eighth line is 8 millimeters.
9. Ninth line is 9 millimeters.
10. Tenth line is 10 millimeters or
1 centimeter.

An inch has 8 equal parts.


1. The first line is 1/8.
2. Second line is ¼.
3. Third line is 3/8.
4. Fourth line is 4/8 or ½.
5. Fifth line is 5/8.
6. Sixth line is 6/8 or ¾.
7. Seventh line is 7/8.
8. Eighth line is 8/8 or 1 inch.

Taking Body Measurements


Taking body measurements is a crucial step in clothing construction. One
should be very careful in doing the task so as to get the accurate measurements.

Here are the guidelines to ensure accuracy.

1. Make a chart of all body measurements needed. Here is a sample chart.

2. Work in pairs to ensure accuracy of measurements.


3. Make sure to use fitted clothing.
4. Tie a string on the smallest part of the torso (waist).
5. Observe proper posture while measurement is taken.

How to Take Body Measurements

Parts of body to be measured can be taken in:


 Horizontal measurement
 Vertical measurement
 Circumferential measurement
1. The horizontal measurement is taken from the left of the figure to the right.
2. The vertical measurement is taken from the top of the body figure to its base.
3. Circumferential measurement is taken around the body.

A. Direction: Get ready with your tape measure. Using a pencil mark your tape
measure with the measurements below. Be ready to pass your marked tape measure
to your teacher. (Note:” means inch/inches.)
