From The Pastors Desk

Dear Parish Family, Peace and all good! This weekends Gospel reading from Matthew (11:1-23) focuses on one of the more than 30 stories that Jesus taught: The Parable of the Sower. Scripture scholars tell us that a parable is a metaphor or simile drawn from nature or common life, arresting the hearer by its vividness or strangeness, and leaving the mind in sufficient doubt of its precise application to tease it into into active thought. (C.H. Dodd). Hmm. Let me see. Metaphor or simile from nature or common life. Okay, Jesus is talking about a typical Palestinian farmer, sowing seed in the traditional manner before plowing and planting it. Arresting the hearer by its vividness or strangeness? Cant you just imagine a group of farmers listening to this tale until Jesus starts to tell them about the obvious carelessness of the Sower? Who in their right minds would throw perfectly good seed into places where there is absolutely zero chance of growth? And what about those crop yields Jesus is bragging about? 100-60-30 fold? Forget it; hell be lucky to get a 10-20 fold return for his trouble. Say, what does this Carpenter know about farming anyhow? But then enters in the sufficient doubt. So, who is the Sower? And what the heck is the seed all about? And what do the different kinds of soil signify? Luckily, Jesus tips his hand and explains this parable to us Himself. But that doesnt let us off the hook. We, as hearers of the Word are called to be bearers of the Word as well. We need to ask ourselves: what kind of recipients are we of the Word: Committed, appreciative, and generous? Or are we flighty, distracted, and preoccupied? Do we take seriously our responsibility to spread the Word through our example, regardless of whether other people accept or reject it? Are we willing to be as open-hearted and extravagantly generous with others as the Lord is with us? Thats where the challenge to tease it (the parable) into active thought comes into play. Play? Its hard work!

Fortunately, we have a superabundance of examples of the power of the Sowers work right here in our own parish garden. Here are a few I can think of right off the bat:
Talk about thorns and weeds! Our parish MOP volunteers have really been mopping up lately! Or should I say cutting up? Maintain Our Parish workers have been removing the weeds and accumulated junk from the tennis/ hockey area on the parish grounds. Many, many thanks! Seeds of hospitality! Our Annual Christmas in July celebration is in full swing as I write. Literally hundreds of parishioners are involved in this extraordinary event to support our parish school, Old Mission Montessori. Welcome to a new sower! Parishioners Mike and Marilyn Pollack report that their nephew will be ordained to the priesthood on July 15 in Duluth, Minnesota. Congratulations to Father Anthony John Craig! Ad multos annos! Talk about a great yield! Our parish Knights of Columbus Council 3162 sent 24 Squires to their recent statewide Circle Convention where they racked up several awards, and our own Squire Joseph Mackey was elected state Burser. Congrats to all especially Co-Chief Squires Jorge Soto and Sean Paz, as well as their mentor-knight, Armando Mena. Those who have ears, let them hear! Our 2nd Annual Multi-Cultural Talent Show is slated for July 22, Admission ($10 adults; $5, kids, 7-12) includes free food (5-6 pm) and incomparable entertainment 6-10 pm)!! Proceeds to support the OLG Sports Court.

Weeds, thorns, pesky birds and stubborn soil dont seem to stand a chance around here! Lets all help to spread the Good Word and sow the Seed! God bless, Fr. Chuck

Is it so overwhelming that you hardly know where to begin, but dont have time to attend bible study classes? Try starting with our book The Bible from Scratch for a lightening (and enlightening) tour from Genesis to Revelation. Its simple and easy to understand and will familiarize you with the books of the Bible overall. If you want more after that, move on to The Essential Bible HandbookA Guide for Catholics with prayers and a glossary of key terms. This book is intended to aid Catholics in developing a stronger faith by providing sound, authoritative information and guidance on the essentials of Catholic belief and practices. It goes into more depth about the history of how the Bible developed, a suggested plan for reading the Bible, a guide to interpreting, how to use the Bible for prayer, etc. You can go a step further by tackling The Scripture Source Book for Catholics. This book by Fr. Peter Klein of the Diocese of Winona, Minnesota is a collection of information about scripture gathered to help people of faith learn about the Catholic understanding and interpretation of scripture, and to enrich their lives through reflection on the Word(s) of God. And if you are interested in the feminine viewpoint, check out Their Stories, Our StoriesWomen of the Bible. Here you will find a clear, warm, freshly contemporary discussion of the women of the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures. Rose Kam has brought these women alive.

Registration for the 2011-2012 Religious Education year is now open in the Faith Formation Office upstairs in the Parish Center.

July 12, 19, 26 & August 2, 9, 16, 2011 10 am-12 pm or 7 pm-9 pm
This course will examine several themes contained in famous Old Testament stories. Beginning with the enormously important and psychologically complex story of Creation and the Fall, we continue with a look at the very human evolution of the Chosen People and their role in the story of Exodus. Further study includes the human condition of suffering when bad things happen to good people in Job, and conversely when good things happen to bad people and much more. Suggestion donation: $5 per session.

HEALING MASS AT ST. JAMES PARISH Solana Beach - July 27, 2011
"With GOD all things are possible." Matthew 19:26

Philosophy Session with Fr. Tom Herbst, OFM Foundations of the Christian World View The Platonic Legacy
Monday, July 18, 20117 pm-9 pm
Christianity has (unfairly) been accused of being a religion in search of metaphysics, it lacks a coherent world view. On the contrary, very early in its history Christianity adapted complex strands of Greek philosophical thought to the Gospel revelation. This lecture describes the enormous, and very beautiful, vision that Platonism brought to the Christian Gospel. Suggestion donation: $15 per session.

Rhythms of Salvation in the Gospel of John

Wednesday, July 20, 2011, 5:30pm
'The Gospel of John is the latest and most theologically reflective of the Four Gospels. Within, is a carefully constructed portrait of the ways and means of our salvation; of blindness and seeing, the necessity of empty hands, recognition of God as a very old and also very new friend, a God who both judges and refuses to judge...all in perfectly ordered rhythm, or like a verbal mosaic, in which every word seems nuanced and weighted with meaning. Join us for an evening of exploration as we delve into the stunning beauty of the Fourth Gospel. Cost: $20 per person. For more information, or to pre-register for any of these events, visit us online at www.sanluisrey.org or call the Retreat Center at 760-757-3659.

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PARROCO

Querida Familia Parroquial,
