I. Solve what is asked.
A test was conducted to 30 students to assess their
ability to solve problem in Mathematics.

Questions:
1. Show the position of each student in the distribution.
Answer:

4. Solve the mean, median, mode, and standard deviation.
Answer:
a. MEAN
UNGROUPED DATA
To find the mean of an ungrouped data, we will use the following
formula:
∑𝒙
𝑥= ; where ∑ 𝒙 – sum of the item values
𝒏
n – number of cases.

Substituting in the formula, we have:

∑𝒙
𝑥= 𝒏
𝟖𝟗𝟖
= 𝟑𝟎
= 29.93

≈ 30, the mean score.

GROUPED DATA
To find the mean of a grouped data, we will use the following formula:
∑ 𝒇𝒙
𝑥= ; where 𝒇 – frequency of the class interval
𝒏
x – midpoint of the class interval.

Substituting in the formula, we have:

∑ 𝒇𝒙
𝑥= 𝒏
𝟖𝟖𝟓
= = 29.5
𝟑𝟎

≈ 30, the mean score.

b. MEDIAN
UNGROUPED DATA
The score distribution will be arranged from highest to lowest
as shown below,
46,41,40,40,40,39,39,38,38,37,37,35,35,34,30,30,29,28,27,27,27,25,22,21,20,18,18,15,12,10

There are 30 scores and the middle is in between the 15th and 16th
place, which is 30 and 30 respectively. Thus, the median is 30.

GROUPED DATA
To find the median of a grouped data, we will use the following formula:
𝒏
−𝐅
𝐌𝐝 = 𝐋 + ( 𝟐
) 𝒊 ;where L – exact lower limit of the median class
𝒇
n – total number of cases
F – “less than” or “equal to” cumulative
frequency before the class interval
containing the median
f – frequency of the median class
i – size of the class interval.

FREQUENCY LOWER < CUMULATIVE

SCORES (f) BOUNDARY FREQUENCY
(L) (F)
46-50 1 45.5 30
41-45 1 40.5 29
36-40 9 35.5 28
31-35 3 30.5 19
26-30 7 25.5 16
21-25 3 20.5 9
16-20 3 15.5 6
11-15 2 10.5 3
6-10 1 5.5 1
1-5 0 0.5 0
i=5 n = 30
Substituting in the formula, we have:
𝒏 𝟑𝟎
−𝐅 −𝟗
𝐌𝐝 = 𝐋 + ( 𝟐
)𝒊 = 25.5 + ( 𝟐
)5
𝒇 𝟕

𝟏𝟓−𝟗
= 25.5 + ( )5
𝟕
𝟔
= 25.5 + (𝟕)5
𝟑𝟎
= 25.5 + 𝟕

= 25.5 + 4.29
= 29.79
≈ 30, the median score.

c. MODE
UNGROUPED DATA
The modes are the scores 27 and 40 as shown in the figure on
the right. Since there are two modes, the distribution is
bimodal.
GROUPED DATA
The class interval where the value with the highest frequency
occurs, which is 9, is the class interval of scores of 36-40, called the
modal class.
The midpoint of the class interval 36-40 is the mode, which is
the score of 38.
The modal score of the 30 students in the particular test is
𝒅𝟏
computed with formula of Mo = Lmo + (𝒅𝟏+𝒅𝟐) 𝒊

where Lmo – exact lower limit of the modal class

d1 – the difference between the frequency of the
modal class and that of the frequency below
the modal class
d2 – the difference between the frequency of the
modal class and that of the frequency above
the modal class
i – size of the class interval.

modal class

Substituting the values, we have:

𝒅𝟏 𝟔
Mo = Lmo + ( )𝒊 = 35.5 + ( )5
𝒅𝟏+𝒅𝟐 𝟔+𝟖
𝟔
= 35.5 + (𝟏𝟒) 5
𝟑𝟎
= 35.5 + 𝟏𝟒
= 35.5 + 2.13
= 37.63
≈ 38.
Thus, a better approximation of the modal score
interval of 30 students in the test is a score of 38.
d. RANGE
The difference between the highest and the lowest values in
a given set of data is the range with the simplest computation,
Range = highest value – lowest value
Substituting,
Range = 46 – 10 = 36.

e. STANDARD DEVIATION

UNGROUPED DATA
To find the standard deviation for ungrouped data, we will use the
following formula:

∑ 𝒅𝟐
𝒔=√ ; where s – standard deviation
𝒏
∑ 𝒅𝟐 – sum of squared deviation
n – number of cases
d – deviation from the mean (x – x )

15 1 -15 225
12 1 -18 324
10 1 -20 400
TOTAL n = 30 ∑ 𝒅𝟐 = 2089

Substituting in the formula, we have:

∑ 𝒅𝟐 𝟐𝟎𝟖𝟗
𝒔=√ = √
𝒏 𝟑𝟎

= √𝟔𝟗. 𝟔𝟑
= 𝟖. 𝟑𝟒 , standard deviation of ungrouped data.
GROUPED DATA
To find the standard deviation for grouped data, we will use the
following formula:

∑ 𝒇𝒅𝟐
𝑠=√ ; where s – standard deviation
𝒏
∑ 𝒇𝒅𝟐 – sum of the product of frequency and
squared deviation
n – number of cases
