Diesel engines use compression ignition, relying on heat from the compressed air to

ignite the fuel. Gas engines require spark ignition to create combustion. This is why
combustion chamber design is different between the two engines. High compression
diesels have much less clearance between the cylinder head and piston at top dead
center than gas engines. The diesel combustion chamber is formed more by the shape
of the piston crown than the cylinder head.
