QUESTION 2

2.1 Mr Ncube is driving from work. His car with a mass of 200kg runs out of petrol just after it
reaches the top of the hill that is 70 m high. He is driving at a constant speed of 10ms-1 when he
reaches the top. It rolls down the hill without friction coming to rest at a hight of h at the top of
the next hill as shown below.

2.1.1 Define mechanical energy (2)

2.1.2 Calculate the total mechanical energy at the top of the first hill (3)

2.1.3 Calculate the height of which the car comes to rest at the top of the second hill (6)

2.2 A metal ball with a mass of 150 g is released on a track from a height of h1. When it is a metre
above the ground, its kinetic energy is 1,76 J.

2.2.1 Define kinetic energy. (2)

2.2.2 Ignore the influence of friction and calculate the height from which it was released. (5)

2.2.3 Calculate the velocity of the ball when it reaches the ground. (3)
