Chaplets
The word chaplet simply comes from the French word for Rosary, which is chapelet, but the
term has now come to be associated with specific sets of prayers, intended to ask the help of
Mary, Jesus, or the saints. The standard five decade rosary is in fact a chaplet, but chaplets
can vary in size, in pattern or grouping of beads, and in the prayers said on each bead.
Typically, the basic prayers, such as the Hail Mary and Our Father are still recited, but
chaplets commonly also include prayers to a specific image of Christ or Mary, a particular
saint or angel, or a litany. Often, a chaplet is based on a certain intention, and so prayers to
the patron saint of that intention or subject will be included.
One of the most common chaplets in recent years is the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, a chaplet Jesus
instructed St. Maria Faustina to pray. It can be said anytime, especially for the dead or dying, but is also
often said as part of the Divine Mercy novena which lasts from Good Friday to Divine Mercy Sunday.
Another popular chaplet is the St. Joseph Chaplet, a set of prayers asking for the protection and
intercession of St. Joseph.

Chaplet for the Dead
The Chaplet for the Dead contains 45 beads. It begins with the Crucifix, 5
introductory beads and 4 sets of 10 beads (40 beads). This Chaplet has no medal.
The 40 beads are in memory of the 40 hours which Our Lord is thought to have
spent in Limbo.
“It is a holy and wholesome thing to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed
from their sins.” ~ II Macab. 12, 46
All Souls’ Day the Rosary or Chaplet for the Souls in Purgatory is a practice earnestly recommended to
all persons who desire to assist the Poor Souls. In anticipation of All Souls’ Day, when night comes on
this day, we darken the room, light a candle blessed at Candlemas, and pray the Rosary for our dead.

Chaplet in Praise of the Virgin Mary
The Chaplet in praise of the Virgin Mary is prayed on the regular Marian Rosary of 59 beads.
"Mary, my Immaculate Mother, I desire to offer thee reparation for the offenses which thy
Immaculate Heart receives from the horrible blasphemies which are uttered against thee. I offer
thee these praises to console thee for so many ungrateful children who do not love thee, and to
console the Heart of thy Divine Son Who is so deeply offended by the insults offered to thee.
Receive, my Purest Mother, this little act of homage. Make me love thee more each day and look
with pity on those blasphemers that they may not delay to cast themselves into thy maternal arms.
Amen."
Concluding Prayer:
"My Mother,
I love thee for those who do not love thee;
I praise thee for those who blaspheme thee;
I surrender myself to thee
for those who will not recognize thee as their Mother."

the souls of the world. With you, I offer the Wounds of your Son, Jesus, to the Father, in

"...When they say this Chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and
the dying person not as the just judge but as the Merciful Savior".
1. You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy
opened up for the whole world. O Fountain of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the
whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.
2. O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us,

Chaplet of Mercy and Forgiveness
This devotion may be prayed on the regular Marian Rosary of 59 beads.
History: This chaplet was composed by Chorbishop Joseph Saidi of Worcester, Massachusetts, U.S.A.
Father Saidi was the pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Maronite Catholic Church from 1947 until his
retirement in August 1977.
"Lord Jesus, we believe in You as You are the Son of Mary and the Son of the Living God,
Creator and Redeemer. You came from heaven to earth to save all mankind. You are the Savior of
the World. You taught us to pray: 'Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy
kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and
forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, now and
forever. Amen.'"
On all of the "Our Father" beads, instead of the "Our Father," say:
"Merciful Jesus, our Redeemer, You said, "ask and you shall receive." We humbly ask You to
hear our prayer, forgive us our sins and grant us Your peace and salvation. We praise You now
and forever." Amen.
On all of the "Hail Mary" beads, instead of the "Hail Mary," say:
"Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us."
At the end of each decade (10 beads), instead of the "Glory be to the Father," say:
"Most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, intercede for us, for the forgiveness of our sins, peace
and eternal salvation from your loving Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of the Living God,
and we praise you, we bless His name now and forever."

Pray 4 "Hail Marys..." on the set of 4 beads in honour of Our Lady of Guadalupe's 4 apparitions to
Blessed Juan Diego.
Prayer:
"Our Lady of Guadalupe, my Queen and my Mother, I thank you for your first apparition to
Blessed Juan Diego when you revealed that you are the Most Pure Virgin, Mary, Mother of the
True God and Mother of all mankind. I thank you for requesting a temple to be built where you
stood, to bear witness to your love, your compassion, your aid and your protection for all who
would love you, trust you, and invoke your help."
Prayer:
"Our Lady of Guadalupe, my Queen and my Mother, I thank you for your second apparition to
Blessed Juan Diego when, upon his return from the Bishop’s house, he knelt in humiliation and
defeat before you
since he was unable to accomplish your mission. I thank you for the courage and encouragement
you gave to Blessed Juan Diego to make a second appeal to the Bishop."
Prayer:
"Mother, I thank you for your third apparition to Blessed Juan Diego when, after this unsuccessful
attempt to have a temple built, you said to him, 'So be it, son. Return tomorrow in order that you
may secure for the Bishop, the sign for which he has asked. When this is in your possession, he
will believe you; he will no longer doubt your world and suspect your good faith. Be assured that I
shall reward you for all that you have undergone.'"

Our Lady of Guadalupe, my Queen and my Mother, I thank you for your fourth apparition to
Blessed Juan Diego when you ordered him to pick the roses he would find on the summit of the

of roses is the sign that you shall take to the Bishop. You are to tell him, in my name, that in this
he will recognize my will and that he must fulfill it. You will be my ambassador, wholly worthy of
my confidence. Only in the presence of the Bishop shall you unfold your mantle and disclose that
which you carry.' I thank you for your image printed on the tilma which appeared when the roses
were released.
1 "Glory Be...".
Closing Prayer:
Remember, 0 most gracious Virgin of Guadalupe, that in thy celestial apparition on the Mount of
Tepeyac, thou didst promise to show thy compassion and pity towards all who, loving and trusting
thee, seek thy help and call upon thee in their necessities and afflictions; also to hearken to our
supplications, to dry our tears and to give us consolation and relief. Inspired with this confidence
we come before thy august presence, certain that thou wilt deign to fulfill thy merciful promises.
We are full of hope that, standing beneath thy protection nothing will trouble or afflict us. Thou
has desired to remain with us through thy admirable image, thou who art our Mother, our health
and our life. O Mary, Mother of God, hear our petitions and in thy mercy answer us. Amen

Chaplet of Saint Michael (Archangel)
The Chaplet of St. Michael is a wonderful way to honor this great Archangel along with the other nine
Choirs of Angels. What do we mean by Choirs? It seems that God has created various orders of Angels.
Sacred Scripture distinguishes nine such groupings: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Powers,
Virtues, Principalities, Archangels and Angels (Isa. 6:2; Gen. 3:24; Col. 1:16; Eph. 1:21; Rom. 8:38).
There may be more groupings but these are the only ones that have been revealed to us. The Seraphim is
believed to be the highest Choir, the most intimately united to God, while the Angelic Choir is the lowest.
The history of this Chaplet goes back to a devout Servant of God, Antonia d'Astonac, who had a vision of
St. Michael. He told Antonia to honor him by nine salutations to the nine Choirs of Angels. St. Michael
promised that whoever would practice this devotion in his honor would have, when approaching Holy
Communion, an escort of nine angels chosen from each of the nine Choirs. In addition, for those who
would recite the Chaplet daily, he promised his continual assistance and that of all the holy angels during
life, and after death deliverance form purgatory for themselves and their relations.

Chaplet of the Five Wounds
(Origin: Passionists)
The first mention of the Chaplet of the Five Wounds is found in a document dating back to 1821. The
Platea of Saints John and Paul, at Rome, relates, "The Most Rev. Fr. General, acting in accordance with
our spirit to promote devotion to the Passion of Our Lord, obtained permission to bless the Chaplet of the
Five Wounds, at the same time enriching it with indulgences." This chaplet was first approved by a decree

Chaplet of the Holy Face
The purpose of the Chaplet of the Holy Face is to honour the Five Wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and
to ask of God the Triumph of His Holy Church and the downfall of her enemies.
Saint Ethanasius stated that the devils, when being asked what verse in the Holy Scripture they feared the
most, they replied, "That with which the sixty-seventh Psalm commences." This passage states, "Let God
arise, and let His enemies be scattered. Let them that hate Him flee from before His Face." They added
that this biblical passage always compelled them to take flight.

The Chaplet of the Holy Face is composed of a medal and 39 beads, 6 of them being large ones, 33 being
small ones, with a medal of the Holy Face.
The chaplet of the Holy Face honours the 5 senses of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, and entreats God for the
triumph of His Church. It is recommended that the faithful pray the Chaplet of the Holy Face to obtain
from God, by means of the Holy Face of the Lord Jesus, the downfall of His enemies.
The 33 small beads represent the 33 years of the mortal life of Our Divine Lord Jesus on earth. The first
30 beads call to mind the 30 years of His hidden life. These are divided into 5 groups, with the intention
of honouring the 5 senses of touch, hearing, sight, smell, and the taste of Jesus. These senses have their
seat, principally, in the Holy Face and render reparative homage for all the sufferings which Our Lord
Jesus endured in His Face, through each of these senses.
The last 3 small beads remind us of the 3 years of public life of Our Saviour, and have as their object, to
honour all the wounds of His Adorable Face.
Make the sign of the Cross, with the Cross, and say:
"O God, incline unto my aid. O Lord, make haste to help me."
Before each group of beads, there is a large bead. On this bead, reflect on the sense of Jesus, or the
wounds of His Face, and say 1 Glory Be... and the following prayer invocation:
"My Jesus, mercy."

(below), therefore commemorating the Five Wounds of Jesus which are the fountains of grace which the
Holy Ghost imparts to all men.
The Meditation: "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the Power of the Most High shall
overshadow thee; and therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of
God." [Lk. 1:35]
The Practice: Diligently implore the aid of the Divine Spirit, and Mary's intercession, to imitate
the virtues of Jesus Christ, Who is the Model of virtues, so that you may be made comformable to
the image of the Son of God.
The Meditation: "Jesus, being baptized, forthwith came out of the water: and lo! the heavens were
opened to Him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon Him." [Mt.
3:16] The Practice: Hold in the highest esteem the priceless gift of sanctifying grace, infused into
your soul by the Holy Ghost in Baptism. Keep the promises to which you then pledged yourself.
Increase, by constant practice, Faith, Hope, and Charity. Ever live as becometh children of God
and members of God's true Church, so as to obtain, hereafter, the inheritance of heaven.
The Meditation: "Jesus, being full of the Holy ghost, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the
Spirit into the desert for the space of forty days; and was tempted by the devil." [Lk. 4:1-2]
The Practice: Be ever grateful for the sevenfold gift of the Holy Ghost bestowed upon you in
Confirmation, for the spirit of wisdom and understanding, of counsel and fortitude, of knowledge
and piety, and of the fear of the Lord. Faithfully yield to His Divine guidance, so that, in all the
trials and temptations of life, you may act manfully, as becometh a perfect Christian and valiant
soldier of Jesus Christ.

The Practice: Thank God for having made you a child of His Church which is ever animated and
directed by the Divine Spirit, sent into this world for that purpose of the day of Pentecost. Hear
and obey the Holy See, the infallible mouthpiece of the Holy Ghost, and the Church, the pillar and
ground of truth. Uphold her doctrines, seek her interests, defend her rights.
The Meditation: "Know you not that you members are the temple of the Holy Ghost, Who is in
you?" [1 Cor. 6:19] "Extinguish not the Spirit." [1 Thess. 5:19] "And grieve not the Holy Spirit of
God whereby you are sealed unto the day of redemption." [Eph. 4:30]

of soul and body. Faithfully obey His Divine Inspirations so that you may bring forth the Fruits of
the Spirit - Charity, Joy, Peace, Patience, Dignity, Goodness, Long-suffering, Mildness, Faith,
