Chaplets
The word chaplet simply comes from the French word for Rosary, which is chapelet, but the
term has now come to be associated with specific sets of prayers, intended to ask the help of
Mary, Jesus, or the saints. The standard five decade rosary is in fact a chaplet, but chaplets
can vary in size, in pattern or grouping of beads, and in the prayers said on each bead.
Typically, the basic prayers, such as the Hail Mary and Our Father are still recited, but
chaplets commonly also include prayers to a specific image of Christ or Mary, a particular
saint or angel, or a litany. Often, a chaplet is based on a certain intention, and so prayers to
the patron saint of that intention or subject will be included.

One of the most common chaplets in recent years is the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, a chaplet Jesus
instructed St. Maria Faustina to pray. It can be said anytime, especially for the dead or dying, but is also
often said as part of the Divine Mercy novena which lasts from Good Friday to Divine Mercy Sunday.
Another popular chaplet is the St. Joseph Chaplet, a set of prayers asking for the protection and
intercession of St. Joseph.

Servite Chaplet or Rosary

Though it can be prayed by anyone, the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows of Mary is
especially connected to the Servite Order (also called Servants of Mary) and so
this unique chaplet is commonly referred to as the Servite Rosary. Rather than
decades, it consists of seven sets of seven beads; the sets of seven beads are called
‘weeks.’ Where the Franciscan Crown is focused on the seven joys of Mary, the
Servite chaplet is focused specifically on the seven sorrows, or dolors, of Mary.
These are the prophecy of Simeon, the flight into Egypt, the loss of Jesus in the
temple, Mary meeting Jesus on the road to Calvary, the Crucifixion, Jesus being
taken down from the cross, and the laying of Jesus’s body in the tomb. The intent
behind the Servite rosary is a devotion to Mary and the real pain she suffered in
watching and sharing in Jesus’s pain, as we are called to share in Jesus’s suffering as well.

Chaplet for the Dead
The Chaplet for the Dead contains 45 beads. It begins with the Crucifix, 5
introductory beads and 4 sets of 10 beads (40 beads). This Chaplet has no medal.
The 40 beads are in memory of the 40 hours which Our Lord is thought to have
spent in Limbo.

“It is a holy and wholesome thing to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed
from their sins.” ~ II Macab. 12, 46

November is traditionally an especially important month to pray for those in

purgatory, and many visit the graves of the departed on All Souls’ Day, November
2nd.

All Souls’ Day the Rosary or Chaplet for the Souls in Purgatory is a practice earnestly recommended to
all persons who desire to assist the Poor Souls. In anticipation of All Souls’ Day, when night comes on
this day, we darken the room, light a candle blessed at Candlemas, and pray the Rosary for our dead.

How to pray the Chaplet for the Dead

One begins and ends this devotion with the De Profundis or the Our Father and the Hail Mary.

On the Introductory Beads and all Large Beads

V. Eternal rest grant unto (him/her), O Lord.
R. And let perpetual light shine upon (him/her)

Act of Faith
My God, I believe in Thee, because Thou art Truth itself;
I firmly believe the truths revealed to the Church.

Act of Hope
My God, I hope in Thee, because Thou art infinitely good.

Act of Charity

My God, I love Thee with all my heart, and above all things, because Thou art infinitely perfect;
and I love my neighbour as myself, for the love of Thee.

On each small bead, you say:

"Sweet Heart of Mary, be my salvation."

Each set of 10 beads is concluded with:

"Eternal Rest Grant unto (him/her) and let the perpetual light shine upon (him/her). May (he/she)
rest in peace."

Conclude with:
V. Eternal rest grant unto (him/her), O Lord.
R. And let perpetual light shine upon (him/her).

V. May (he/she) rest in peace.

R. Amen.

V. May (his/her) soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in
peace.
R. Amen. +

May the love of God and the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ bless us and console us and gently
wipe every tear from our eyes. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

R. Amen.

De profundis (Psalm 129 Out of The Depths)

Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice! Let Your ears be attentive to my
voice in supplication: If you, O Lord, mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand? But with You is
forgiveness, that You may be revered. I trust in the Lord; my soul trusts in His word. My soul
waits for the Lord, more than sentinels wait for the dawn. More than sentinels wait for the dawn,
let Israel wait for the Lord; For with the Lord is kindness and with Him is plenteous redemption;
And He will redeem Israel from all their iniquities.

console the Heart of thy Divine Son Who is so deeply offended by the insults offered to thee.
Receive, my Purest Mother, this little act of homage. Make me love thee more each day and look
with pity on those blasphemers that they may not delay to cast themselves into thy maternal arms.

How to pray the Chaplet of Mercy and Forgiveness

Begin by blessing yourself and kissing the Crucifix. Looking at the crucifix, say:

"Lord Jesus, we believe in You as You are the Son of Mary and the Son of the Living God,
Creator and Redeemer. You came from heaven to earth to save all mankind. You are the Savior of
the World. You taught us to pray: 'Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy
kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and
forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, now and
forever. Amen.'"

On all of the "Our Father" beads, instead of the "Our Father," say:

"Merciful Jesus, our Redeemer, You said, "ask and you shall receive." We humbly ask You to
hear our prayer, forgive us our sins and grant us Your peace and salvation. We praise You now
and forever." Amen.

On all of the "Hail Mary" beads, instead of the "Hail Mary," say:

"Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us."

At the end of each decade (10 beads), instead of the "Glory be to the Father," say:

"Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, intercede for us."

At the end of the last decade of the chaplet, say:

"Most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, intercede for us, for the forgiveness of our sins, peace
and eternal salvation from your loving Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of the Living God,
and we praise you, we bless His name now and forever."

Remember, 0 most gracious Virgin of Guadalupe, that in thy celestial apparition on the Mount of
Tepeyac, thou didst promise to show thy compassion and pity towards all who, loving and trusting
thee, seek thy help and call upon thee in their necessities and afflictions; also to hearken to our
supplications, to dry our tears and to give us consolation and relief. Inspired with this confidence
we come before thy august presence, certain that thou wilt deign to fulfill thy merciful promises.
We are full of hope that, standing beneath thy protection nothing will trouble or afflict us. Thou
has desired to remain with us through thy admirable image, thou who art our Mother, our health

Chaplet of Saint Michael (Archangel)
The Chaplet of St. Michael is a wonderful way to honor this great Archangel along with the other nine
Choirs of Angels. What do we mean by Choirs? It seems that God has created various orders of Angels.
Sacred Scripture distinguishes nine such groupings: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Powers,
Virtues, Principalities, Archangels and Angels (Isa. 6:2; Gen. 3:24; Col. 1:16; Eph. 1:21; Rom. 8:38).
There may be more groupings but these are the only ones that have been revealed to us. The Seraphim is
believed to be the highest Choir, the most intimately united to God, while the Angelic Choir is the lowest.

The history of this Chaplet goes back to a devout Servant of God, Antonia d'Astonac, who had a vision of
St. Michael. He told Antonia to honor him by nine salutations to the nine Choirs of Angels. St. Michael
promised that whoever would practice this devotion in his honor would have, when approaching Holy
Communion, an escort of nine angels chosen from each of the nine Choirs. In addition, for those who
would recite the Chaplet daily, he promised his continual assistance and that of all the holy angels during
life, and after death deliverance form purgatory for themselves and their relations.

Chaplet of the Holy Face
The purpose of the Chaplet of the Holy Face is to honour the Five Wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and
to ask of God the Triumph of His Holy Church and the downfall of her enemies.

This Chaplet was composed by Sister Saint Pierre, a Carmelite of Tours.

Saint Ethanasius stated that the devils, when being asked what verse in the Holy Scripture they feared the
most, they replied, "That with which the sixty-seventh Psalm commences." This passage states, "Let God
arise, and let His enemies be scattered. Let them that hate Him flee from before His Face." They added
that this biblical passage always compelled them to take flight.

The chaplet of the Holy Face honours the 5 senses of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, and entreats God for the
triumph of His Church. It is recommended that the faithful pray the Chaplet of the Holy Face to obtain
from God, by means of the Holy Face of the Lord Jesus, the downfall of His enemies.

The 33 small beads represent the 33 years of the mortal life of Our Divine Lord Jesus on earth. The first
30 beads call to mind the 30 years of His hidden life. These are divided into 5 groups, with the intention
of honouring the 5 senses of touch, hearing, sight, smell, and the taste of Jesus. These senses have their
seat, principally, in the Holy Face and render reparative homage for all the sufferings which Our Lord
Jesus endured in His Face, through each of these senses.

The last 3 small beads remind us of the 3 years of public life of Our Saviour, and have as their object, to
honour all the wounds of His Adorable Face.

How to pray the Chaplet of the Five Wounds

Begin as follows:

Make the sign of the Cross, with the Cross, and say:
"O God, incline unto my aid. O Lord, make haste to help me."

Then say 1 Glory Be....

Before each group of beads, there is a large bead. On this bead, reflect on the sense of Jesus, or the
wounds of His Face, and say 1 Glory Be... and the following prayer invocation:
"My Jesus, mercy."

On every small bead, say:

"Arise, O Lord, and let Thy enemies be scattered, and let them that hate Thee flee before Thy
Face!"

At the end, say:

The Glory Be... 7 times, in honour of the last 7 Words that Jesus spoke on the Cross, and the 7
dolors of the Immaculate Virgin.

Upon completing the Chaplet, say on the medal:

"O God, our Protector, look down upon us and cast Thine eyes upon the Face of Thy Christ!"

During the praying of each set of 7 beads, the faithful is asked to meditate on one of the 5 mysteries
(below), therefore commemorating the Five Wounds of Jesus which are the fountains of grace which the
Holy Ghost imparts to all men.

THE FIRST MYSTERY

By the Holy Ghost is Jesus conceived of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Meditation: "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the Power of the Most High shall
overshadow thee; and therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of
God." [Lk. 1:35]

The Practice: Diligently implore the aid of the Divine Spirit, and Mary's intercession, to imitate
the virtues of Jesus Christ, Who is the Model of virtues, so that you may be made comformable to
the image of the Son of God.

THE SECOND MYSTERY

The Spirit of the Lord rested upon Jesus when he was baptized.

The Meditation: "Jesus, being baptized, forthwith came out of the water: and lo! the heavens were
opened to Him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon Him." [Mt.
3:16] The Practice: Hold in the highest esteem the priceless gift of sanctifying grace, infused into
your soul by the Holy Ghost in Baptism. Keep the promises to which you then pledged yourself.
Increase, by constant practice, Faith, Hope, and Charity. Ever live as becometh children of God
and members of God's true Church, so as to obtain, hereafter, the inheritance of heaven.

THE THIRD MYSTERY

By the Spirit is Jesus led into the desert to be tempted by the Devil.

The Meditation: "Jesus, being full of the Holy ghost, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the
Spirit into the desert for the space of forty days; and was tempted by the devil." [Lk. 4:1-2]

The Practice: Be ever grateful for the sevenfold gift of the Holy Ghost bestowed upon you in
Confirmation, for the spirit of wisdom and understanding, of counsel and fortitude, of knowledge
and piety, and of the fear of the Lord. Faithfully yield to His Divine guidance, so that, in all the
trials and temptations of life, you may act manfully, as becometh a perfect Christian and valiant
soldier of Jesus Christ.

THE FOURTH MYSTERY

The Holy Ghost in the Church.

The Meditation: "Suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a mighty wind coming, and it
filled the whole house where they were sitting... and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and
began to speak... the wonderful works of God." [Acts, 2:2, 4, 11.]

The Practice: Thank God for having made you a child of His Church which is ever animated and
directed by the Divine Spirit, sent into this world for that purpose of the day of Pentecost. Hear
and obey the Holy See, the infallible mouthpiece of the Holy Ghost, and the Church, the pillar and
ground of truth. Uphold her doctrines, seek her interests, defend her rights.

THE FIFTH MYSTERY

The Holy Ghost in the soul of the just man and just woman.

The Meditation: "Know you not that you members are the temple of the Holy Ghost, Who is in
you?" [1 Cor. 6:19] "Extinguish not the Spirit." [1 Thess. 5:19] "And grieve not the Holy Spirit of
God whereby you are sealed unto the day of redemption." [Eph. 4:30]

The Practice: Be ever mindful of the Holy Ghost Who is within you, and carefully cultivate purity
of soul and body. Faithfully obey His Divine Inspirations so that you may bring forth the Fruits of
the Spirit - Charity, Joy, Peace, Patience, Dignity, Goodness, Long-suffering, Mildness, Faith,
Modesty, Continency, Chastity.

Conclude with the "I believe..." as a profession of faith.

Say finally once "Our Father...", "Hail Mary...", and "Glory be to the Father...," for the intentions of the
Sovereign Pontiff.

"Dearest Mother, I Believe, that Jesus Christ, your Son is truly present in the Sacrament of the
Most Holy Eucharist, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. I Believe, that He is the, only begotten Son
of God, Who became Man to save me, a sinner. By partaking of this Most Holy Sacrament,

I profess:
That I believe in the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and that Her teachings and
sacraments were instituted by Christ.

That because this is truly His Precious Body and life giving Blood, to receive Him in the state of

mortal sin will bring me judgement and condemnation.

Dearest Virgin of Virgins, I declare these truths before You as my Witness, that You who are the
