Have you ever watched a very active colony of ants? You might wonder if the colony has a leader. Ant
colonies often look chaotic, but they actually accomplish tasks quite efficiently. It turns out, there is no
leader. Ant colonies function in a collective manner. Scientists call this behavior “swarm intelligence.”
Using swarm intelligence, ants are able to find the quickest route to food sources and defend their
territory. Instead of one leader “telling” the others what to do, all of the ants are constantly interacting
with one another to make decisions.
Swarm intelligence is so impressive that researchers have started to study ants in order to help businesses
operate better. For example, an airline was having problems efficiently moving cargo. Workers were
spending too much time on unimportant tasks. By studying how ants find the most efficient route to food,
researchers were able to help the airline figure out the best way to move cargo.
Scientists are currently studying bees, ants, and other social insects. It will be fascinating to see what else
we will learn from these tiny marvels.

Did you know people around the world consume 80 billion new pieces of clothing every year? The
problem with this consumption is the impact it has on our planet. The United States alone creates 11
million tons of textile waste every year.
So how can you enjoy clothes and do your part to protect the environment? One great idea is to ask
yourself how many times you will likely wear something. If you won’t wear a piece of clothing at least 30
times, maybe you shouldn’t buy it.
Fashion can be fun. Making wise choices will ensure you only buy clothes you will wear a lot. As a
bonus, you will be leaving a smaller fashion footprint on the planet.
