Activity Title : Factoring Polynomials: General Trinomial
Learning Target : Factoring a General Trinomial
Reference(s) : Math 8 Self-learning Module, DepEd-Region XII, 2020, M8AL-Ib-2
LAS Writer : Jamaico H. Taborada

Steps to factor a General Trinomial:

1. List all the possible factors of a and c in the general trinomial 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐
2. Find the factors of c whose sum is equal to constant b; and
3. Express the binomial factors of the trinomial.

Example 1: Factor 𝑥2 + 5𝑥 + 6
Factors of 6
1 6
► List all the possible factors of 6 -1 -6
3 2
-3 -2
Factors of 6 Sum
1 6 7
► Find the factor of 6 whose sum is 5. -1 -6 -7
3 2 5
-3 -2 -5
Express the binomial factors of the trinomial: (𝑥 + 3) (𝑥 + 2)
Thus, the factors of 𝑥2 + 5𝑥 + 6 = (𝑥 + 3) (𝑥 + 2).

Example 2: Factor 2𝑥2 + 7𝑥 + 5

(2) (2) 5
► List all the possible factors of (2) (2) and 5. 2𝑥2 (1)(5)
(𝑥)(2𝑥) (−1) (−5)
Possible Sum of the product of the outer
factors terms and the product of the
► Determine the middle term. inner terms
(𝑥 + 1) (2𝑥 + 5) 5𝑥 + 2𝑥 = 7𝑥
(𝑥 + 5) (2𝑥 + 1) 𝑥 + 10𝑥 = 11𝑥
(𝑥 − 1) (2𝑥 − 5) − 5𝑥 − 2𝑥 = −7𝑥
(𝑥 − 5) (2𝑥 − 1) −𝑥 − 10𝑥 = −11𝑥
2
Thus, the factors of 2x + 7𝑥 + 5 are (𝑥 + 1) (2𝑥 + 5).

Activity: Let’s try this!

Factor the following. Show your solution.
1. 𝑥2 + 7𝑥 + 12 2. 𝑥2 − 2𝑥 – 15 3. 12𝑥2 − 29𝑥 + 15
