DEFINITION OF TERMS

 EDC – Expected Date of Confinement or

 EDD – Expected Date of Delivery
 LMP – Last menstrual Period
 AOG – Age of Gestation
NAEGELE’S RULE

 Naegele’s Rule is a
standard way of
calculating or
estimating the date
of delivery or
confinement
(EDC/EDD) or “due
date”.
How to calculate the EDD from LMP?

1. Determine the first FORMULA:

day of the last
menstrual period  January to March
(LMP) ( + 9 months + 7 days)
2. Count back
(subtract) 3 months  April to December
from that date (LMP) ( - 3 moths +7 days + 1 yr)
3. Lastly, Add 1 year
and seven days to
that day
CALCULATING EDC/EDD

❖Example #1: LMP = November 2, 2020

11 / 2 / 2020
( -3/ +7/ +1)
8 / 9 / 2021
❖Answer: EDC = August 9, 2021
CALCULATING EDC/EDD

❖Example #2:
LMP = January 10, 2021
1 / 10 / 2021
(+9/ +7/ +0)
10 / 17/ 2021
❖Answer: EDC = October 17, 2021
CALCULATING EDC/EDD

 Example #3:
LMP = January 27, 2021 Note: Oct =31 days
1 / 27 / 2021 31 days = 1 month
(+9 / +7/ +0)
10 / 34 / 2021
(-31)_____
10 / 3 / 2021
(+1)
Answer: EDC = November 3, 2021 (11/3/2021)
Age of Gestation (AOG)

o The time the fetus grow from conception to

birth.
o Calculation is based on an average 280
days gestation (40 wks) from the first
day of LMP.
Calculating AOG

Number of days per

month
1 - Jan = 31 days 7 – July = 31
2 - Feb = 28 8 – Aug = 31
3 – Mar = 31 9 - Sept = 30
4- Apr = 30 10 - Oct = 31
5 – May =31 11- Nov = 30
6- June = 30 12 – Dec = 31
Calculating AOG
 Example #1
- LMP = December 15, 2020
- Date of Pre-natal : March 10, 2021
- Start counting from December 15 to March 10, 2021 then
divide by 7
December (31 days – 15 ) = 16 more days left
January = 31 days
February = 28 days
Until March = 10 only
(add) 85 days / 7 = 12.1 weeks
Answer: AOG = 12 weeks and 1 day
Calculating AOG
❖ Example #2
 LMP = November 25, 2020
 Prenatal Date: April 2, 2021
 Start counting from Nov 25 to April 2, 2021

 November ( 30 days – 25) = 5 days left

 December = 31 days
 January = 31 days
 February =28 days
 March =31 days
 Until April = 2 only
(add) 128 days / 7 =18.2
Answer: AOG = 18 weeks and 2 days
Activity/ Exercises #1

Calculate EDC and AOG

1. LMP = April 4, 2021; Pre-natal date July 13

2. LMP = January 18, 2021; Pre natal date July 13
3. LMP = March 19, 2021; Pre-natal date July 13
4. LMP = Feb 27,2021; Pre-natal date July 13,2021
Activity/ Exercises #2

 Estimating the Expected Date of Delivery

 Calculating the Age of Gestation
 Determine the OB Score (GTPALM)

 SITUATION :
 Mrs. Martin 36 y/o went to the clinic for a monthly
prenatal visit on July 10, 2021. According to her, her
LMP was on January 2, 2021. Upon getting the OB
history, her 1st pregnancy is 40 weeks delivered to alive
