T HE YELLOW HOUS E

Plot Area: 10,172 sq ft

Built-Up Area: 9,397 sq ft
Project Timeline: 2015 – 2017
Project Cost: 300 Lacs
This modern yet minimalistic residential building form is

interpreted with blocks and a curved wall which swiftly partitions

the house from the garden space. The contrasting hues of stark

yellow and the grey of concrete, makes for one of its kind

minimalist mélange of colors. The site of 10,172 sq ft is a part of

an old residential settlement of Surat city, and is juxtaposed along

a community hall.
The simplicity of the structure highlighted by the vibrant nuances of façade, creates
an excitement in the mind of a spectator to explore more about the building.

The house belongs to a nuclear family of five consisting of a grandmother. This

conveyed the need for designing the house with easily interconnected spaces. The
journey within the house is made exciting. The house is planned as an elevated
structure that brings out an emotion of happiness and excitement while traversing
through the spaces. The house occupies half portion of the plot, leaving the other
half for accommodating a spacious garden. The structure is defined as a cluster
of masses planned to control the structure. A curvilinear concrete wall flanks the
mass creating semi open spaces and disconnects the built volume from the garden
space. Connection of inside and outside is explored to the fullest and this is reflected
in the interior design of the house.
The traditional element of Indian architecture known as otla , a semi covered
space designed at the entrance of the building becomes a spot for conversations.
Traditionally, otlas used to be embellished with either traditional wooden doors
with intricate carvings or designed along the series of doors. This element has
been a crucial part of Indian architecture. Client’s love for the traditional otla , in
this house is translated in the form of verandahs and terraces at all levels and
this generates the massing for the house. The curved concrete wall flanks the
yellow mass creating a covered seating and screens the house from the garden
defining the inside and the outside. The architecture celebrates the outdoor living to
its fullest.

The interiors are spacious, neat and get a unified character with the white marble
flooring. The spaces are highlighted by browns of wood in form of furniture pieces,
the framework of the windows and the wood-framed mirror walls.

A striking design of a partition in the living room catches the attention with its
pattern that adds charm to the space. This helps in dividing the living room into
two. Framed in black, it is the differently shaped and sized Buddhist prayer wheels
that are the show-stealers of the space.

Bedrooms are designed with a cozy interior and a warm feel and all of them open up
into balconies, terraces dotted with swings. The design of swings as an element is
an important part of the interior of the house. The bedroom furniture gets a vibe of
warmth through the teakwood applied for framing. The furnishings and upholstery
disseminate a look and feel of softness and comfort to the bedrooms. Yellow stone
wall panels and wooden panelings with pastel colour upholstery for furniture places
against it is creates a striking contrast. The design takes a lot of inspiration from
the old lifestyle of the client and attempts to establish a continuity in this house.
