Activity No. 3
Free Fall
I. Introduction
The Italian scientist Galileo Galilei is said to have dropped two spheres of
different masses from Leaning Tower of Pisa to demonstrate that their time of descent
was independent of their mass. Via this method, he supposedly discovered that the
objects fell at the same acceleration independent of their masses. This was contrary to
what Aristotle had taught: that heavy objects fall faster than lighter ones, in direct
proportion to weight.
By completing this activity, we will explain uniform acceleration.
II. Materials
2 pcs of used bond paper (any paper of the same size), coin
III. Procedure
1. Crumple up one piece of paper.
2. Hold the piece of paper on one hand and the crumpled paper on other hand
atabout a meter from the ground. Drop them simultaneously. Which falls to the
ground faster? Record at table 1
3. Hold the piece of paper and the coin at the same height. Drop them
simultaneously. Which falls to the ground faster? Paper or coin?
4. Hold the piece of crumpled paper and the coin at the same height. Drop them
simultaneously. Which falls to the ground faster? Crumpled Paper or coin?
5. Complete table A.

IV. Results and Discussion

Table 1. Free Fall Activity
Do the two objects If no, which falls to What happed if you the
Pair of Objects reach the ground at the ground first? same activity more
the same time? than 1m above the
[Yes/No] ground?
Piece of Paper and No Crumpled paper The crumpled paper
Crumpled paper will also fall first.
Piece of Paper and No Coin Still, the coin will
coin also
fall first before the
piece of paper.
Piece of Crumpled Yes Both They are going to fall

1
Paper and Coin both in same time.

V. Conclusion

Through this activity we performed and learned that dropping of objects with different
masses doesn't have the same rate. The greater the weight the faster the object falls down.
