ILK ASL WEEK 16 Assessment of Learning

Topic Measures of central tendency

Intended Learning Outcomes:: At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
1.distinguish the 3 measures of central tendency the mean, median and mode.
2. explain when to use the 3 measures of central tendency.
3. identify the advantage of using any of the central tendency.
Introduction: Central tendency is a single value that attempts to describe a set of data. By
identifying the central position within that set of data or scores.
Inputs: Measures of central tendency help you find the middle, or the average, of a data set.
The 3 most common measures of central tendency are the mean, median and mode. The mode
is the most frequent value. The median is the middle number in an ordered data set.
The most common measures of central tendency are the arithmetic mean, the median, and
the mode. A middle tendency can be calculated for either a finite set of values or for a
theoretical distribution, such as the normal distribution.
Determine which measure of central tendency you wish to calculate. The three types are
mean, median and mode. To calculate the mean, add all your data and divide the result
by the number of data.
Mean is the most frequently used measure of central tendency and generally considered
the best measure of it. However, there are some situations where either median or mode are
preferred. Median is the preferred measure of central tendency when: There are a few extreme
scores in the distribution of the data.
The central tendency measure is defined as the number used to represent the center or
middle of a set of data values. The three commonly used measures of central tendency are the
mean, median, and mode.
Central tendency is defined as “the statistical measure that identifies a single value as
representative of an entire distribution.”[2] It aims to provide an accurate description of the entire
data. It is the single value that is most typical/representative of the collected data.
The central tendency is needed for the following reasons:

Average provides the overall picture of the series. We cannot remember each and every
facts relating to a field of enquiry. 2. Average value provides a clear picture about the field under
study for guidance and necessary conclusion.
The mean (average) of a data set is found by adding all numbers in the data set and
then dividing by the number of values in the set. The median is the middle value when a data
set is ordered from least to greatest. The mode is the number that occurs most often in a data
set.
Difference between central tendency and dispersion:
Measures that indicate the approximate centre of a distribution are
called measures of central tendency. Measures that describe the spread of the data
are measures of dispersion. These measures include the mean, median, mode, range,
upper and lower quartiles, variance, and standard deviation.
The main purpose for obtaining a measure of central tendency is to find a single value that
will serve as the representative of the entire distribution of scores. Usually, this value is the
average of the scores, which could be the mean, median, or the mode.

The use of measuring the central tendency is that they help you find the middle, or the
average, of a data set. Central Tendency is Important. Central tendency is very useful in
psychology. It lets us know what is normal or 'average' for a set of data. It also condenses the
data set down to one representative value, which is useful when you are working with large
amounts of data. The measures of central tendency allow researchers to determine the
typical numerical point in a set of data. The data points of any sample are distributed on
a range from lowest value to the highest value. Measures of central tendency tell
researchers where the centre value lies in the distribution of data
In our daily affairs the median and the mode are the only measures of central
tendency that can be used for ordinal data, in which values are ranked relative to each
other but are not measured absolutely. the most frequent value in the data set.

Mode is used in real life .When looking at a set of information, the mode is simply the
number that occurs most often in the set. ... If you use a measure like the average to try
to compare salaries in the town as a whole, the owner's income would severely throw
off the numbers. This is where the measure of mode can be useful in the real world.
The mode is the least used of the measures of central tendency and can only
be used when dealing with nominal data. For this reason, the mode will be the best
measure of central tendency (as it is the only one appropriate to use) when dealing with
nominal data.

Examples of real life application of measures of central tendency:

Median is the measure of central tendency.
...
Examples of Median
 Choosing the appropriate movie genre. Suppose, you and your family members go to
watch a movie. ...
 Grouping Data. ...
 Explicating the Poverty Line. ...
 Buying a property. ...
 Home budget. ...
 Business. ...
 Median Salary.
In our daily life the mean is the sum of the numbers in a data set divided
by the total number of values in the data set. The mean is also known
as the average. The mean can be used to get an overall idea or picture of the data
set. Mean is best used for a data set with numbers that are close together.
The mean can be used to represent the typical value and therefore serves as a yardstick
for all observations. For example, if we would like to know how many hours on average an
employee spends at training in a year, we can find the mean training hours of a group of
employees.
The mean is often used in research, academics and in sports. When you watch a
baseball game and you see the player's batting average, that number represents the total
number of hits divided by the number of times at bat. In other words, that number is the mean.

The mean is used mostly as a general indicator for data, and works best when
there are not a lot of outliers. For example, there is no way of knowing in this example
whether some of the members are 90 and some are 5, or if all members are in their 40s.
Where do we use averages in everyday life?
Uses of average in daily life: To determine the performance of the different classes
within a school, instead of comparing the marks of each student of each class we just
find the average marks of a particular class and compare it with the average of the other
