Geotechnical Investigation for Construction of Bridge at km 18+200, along Langtang – Wase Road, Plateau State.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Subsoils investigation was conducted for the Engineering Design
for the construction of Standard Bridge at km 18+200, Langtang – Wase Road, Plateau
State, Nigeria. The strata formations in the 5No test borings for the bridge location
shows a predominance of silty sand, sandy clay, weakly cemented sandstone
(weathered), and Sandstone within total explored depths of 30.0m boring in all
locations. The test bore was drilled by conducting Standard Penetration Test (SPT) at
every 1.5m intervals up to a refusal below the existing ground level.

The bearing capacity stated for at various strata at shallow later were estimated but due
to the nature of the layer, which are more of weakly cemented Sandstone, shallow
foundation could not be considered due to loading of the structures or settlement on the
layer, therefore, the foundation of the structure should be transferred to the more
compact sandstone strata by means of Bored and cast in-situ Piles, this should be drilled
through it to resist lateral deformation.

The overburden pressure in the test bore in all the 5Nos boring locations varies with
depth and strata ranging between 90 – 600 kN/m2. Therefore, the foundation of the
bridge at their proposed abutment and pier locations should be BORED AND CAST IN
PLACE PILES at depths of 15 -30m from the existing ground level, the actual depth of
piling should be based on the safe pile capacities requirements as computed in section
6.2. NOTE: Depending on the method of piling to be employed, temporary or permanent
steel casing could be used to help protect the wall of the boring so as to prevent falling
back of the soil into the drilled hole mostly at the deeper depth location due to the
nature of the subsurface which are majorly sand. This will also help prevent deleterious
material from mixing with the concrete.
