Area and perimeter by counting
and measuring
How do I find the area and perimeter
of a shape?
What are perimeter and area?
Perimeter is the length around the outside of a
shape.

Area is the space inside a shape.

Example

The rectangle has a perimeter of:

5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16cm
The rectangle has a area of:
5 + 5 + 5 = 15cm²
Take note of
5 × 3 = 15cm²
the units!
Find the perimeter and area of this
rectangle:

Perimeter = 20cm

Area = 24cm²
Rectangles and Triangles

Can I calculate the perimeter and

area of a rectangle and triangle?
The formulae to remember:
Rectangle:
Area = length × width
𝐴 = 𝑙𝑤

Triangle:
Area = base × height ÷ 2
1
𝐴 = 𝑏ℎ
2
Remember that the height is at right angles to
the base!
Two examples:

8cm
12cm
Area = 8 × 6 Area = 5 × 12 ÷ 2
Area = 48cm² Area = 60cm² ÷ 2
Perimeter = 8 + 6 + 8 + 6 Area = 30cm²
Perimeter = 28cm

Perimeter = 38cm
Parallelograms and Trapeziums

Can I calculate the area of a

parallelogram and trapezium?
The formula:
Parallelogram:
Area = base × vertical height
𝐴 = 𝑏ℎ

Trapezium:
Area = (Half the sum of parallel sides) × height
𝑎+𝑏
𝐴= ×ℎ

Area – Working Backwards

Now you can find the area of shapes,

can you find a length having been
given the area?
Formulae Reminder:
Rectangle: 𝐴 = 𝑙𝑤

1
Triangle: 𝐴 = / 𝑏ℎ

Parallelogram: 𝐴 = 𝑏ℎ

2-3
Trapezium: 𝐴 = ×ℎ
/

Circle: 𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟 /
Find the missing lengths:

Compound Shapes

Can I calculate the perimeter and

area of a compound shape?
What is a compound shape?
A compound shape is a shape that is made up of
lots of different shapes.

The key is to split the complex shape up into

simpler shapes, find the areas of the simple
shapes then add your areas together.
An example
Find the area of this shape:
12cm

Area = 8×5 = 40cm²

Area = 8×4 8cm
8cm = 32cm²
3cm

Split it up!

Area = 40 + 32 = 72cm²
Another example
Find the area of this shape:
6×7
Area = /
3m
= 13.5m²

6m Area = 9×6 = 54m²

9m

Split it up!

Area = 54 + 13.5 = 67.5cm²

A couple of questions:
Question 1
Find the area of this shape:
12cm Question 2

3cm

5cm 8m

6cm 10m

Answer: 66cm² Answer: 80m²

Surface Area

Can I calculate the surface area of a

cuboid or a triangular prism?
Find the surface area of this cuboid:
5cm × 10cm = 50cm² 4cm × 5cm = 20cm²
4cm 4cm × 10cm = 40cm²
5cm
10cm

Each face you can see has a face exactly the

same opposite it.
There are two
2 × 4 × 10 = 80cm²
of each size of
rectangle
2 × 4 × 5 = 40cm²
2 × 5 × 10 = 100cm²
Total surface area = 220cm²
Find the surface area of these two
cuboids:
Cuboid 1 Cuboid 2

9cm

6cm
5cm

Answer: 258cm² Answer: 192cm²
