ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE

QUARTER 1 – MODULE 1
REQUESTING TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, AND MATERIALS
INTRODUCTION

Electrical task can be accomplished systematically to save time, effort, and resources. Most
of the work cannot be done using bare hands. To do the task, electrical tools or materials are
needed to perform the job. This lesson will discuss the function/use of each tool or materials used
in electrical wiring installations.

LESSON PROPER
The following are common electrical tools needed in the installation of electrical
wiring/devices
1. Screwdrivers -these tools are made of steel hardened and tempered at the tip used to
loosen or tighten screws with slotted heads. They come in various sizes and shapes.

1.1 Flat Screwdriver - the blade tip is wedge

shaped and resembles a negative (-) sign.
This is used to drive screws with a single slot
head.
1.2 Phillips Screwdriver- this has a cross tip
resembling a positive (+) sign. This is used to
drive screws with cross slot heads.

1.3 Allen Screwdriver/ Wrench- This could

be in the shape of screwdriver or a wrench,
its function is to drive a screw with
hexagonal slot head.
1.4 Stubby Screwdriver - it comes in either
Standard or Phillips screwdriver with short
shank or blade and a shorted handle, used to
turn screws in tight space where standard
screwdriver cannot be used.

2. Pliers - are made of metal with insulators in the handle. They are used for cutting,
twisting, bending, and holding wires and cables.

2.1 Combination Pliers – usually called as

linemen’s pliers, used to hold, bend, and
cut electrical wires and cables.
2.2 Side Cutting Pliers – also called as
diagonal pliers. This type of pliers is used
for cutting small to medium size of wires
2.3 Long Nose Pliers - This could be in the
shape of screwdriver or a wrench, its
function is to drive a screw with
hexagonal slot head.
3. Claw Hammer - a special 4. Hacksaw -
type of hammer, which is this tool is
used in pounding nails, manually
striking surfaces, and cut
extracting nails from metal/PVC
some object or surface. conduits
and other
metals.
5. Electrician’s Knife - used 6. Electric Drill -
to remove insulation of big it is used in
and small wires when wire making holes on
stripper cannot be used woods, metals,
and concrete
walls.
7. Wire Stripper - this is a tool used for removing
insulation of medium-sized wires. It has two types:
7.1 Manual - has round holes that correspond to wire
size. Removing of insulation is done while squeezing
and pulling out wire. This can also be used to cut
medium- sized copper wires.
7.2 Automatic - operated by squeezing where one end 7.1 Manual
7.2 Automatic
will hold the wire and the other will remove the
insulation, has spring to retain to original position.

8. Pipe bender – a tool used to bend

rigid metallic conduit by the use of
hands and/or foot

8.1 Hydraulic Pipe bender – this type of

bender uses hydraulic (oil) pressure to
bend various sizes of metallic pipes 7.1 Manual

7.2 Hydraulic

9. Pull-push rule – also known as tape measure, which is

retractable and coils into a compact case. It is used for
measuring linear and perpendicular distance, usually has
inch and centimeter as units of measurement

10. Angle Grinder – an electric tool that has a replaceable

disc and can be used in cutting, grinding, and polishing.
Electrical materials/devices are essential components to safely utilize electricity when
delivered by the power distribution companies. The following are the most common electrical
materials/devices:

1. Convenience Outlet (CO)- is a device

that acts as a convenient source of
electrical energy for current consuming
appliances. It is where the male plug of an
appliance is inserted and usually fastened
on the wall or connected in an extension Flush type C.O. Surface type CO
cord. This can be surface type or flush
type.

2. Switch - is a device that

connects and disconnects the
flow of electric current in a
circuit. There are many
shapes, designs and types
Flush type
and are classified as hanging, Hanging type
flush and surface types. Surface type

3. Receptacle - is a device that `

holds the lamp in place to safely
connect the wires to the circuit.
This is usually made of porcelain
or plastic and classified as flush,
hanging (weather-proof/chain) Surface type Hanging type
and surface types. Flush type

4. Junction Box - an 5. Utility Box - a

octagonal shaped rectangular shaped
electrical material where metallic or plastic
the connections or joints (PVC) material where
of wire are being done. It flush type
is also where the flush convenience outlets
type of receptacle is and switches are
attached. This could be attached.
made of metal or (PVC)
Polyvinylchloride.

6. Male Plug - a device 7. Conduits/Pipes -

inserted to a electrical materials used

appliance. insulation. These could be
rigid metallic, rigid
nonmetallic, flexible
nonmetallic, and
flexible metallic conduit
8. Fuse - a circuit 9. Circuit breaker - a
protective device that protective device that
automatically melts the is reusable after
thin strand of wire inside tripping, used to cut

10.1. Stranded wire is made of multiple strands joined

together to form a single wire.

electrical wire.

REMEMBER

Electrical tools are objects that aid the user to do the installation, troubleshooting, and
repair properly and quickly. There are different tools available, and they can be grouped as hand
tools, electric tools, hydraulic, and pneumatic tools. Choosing the right tool is important to do the
task effectively and efficiently.
Electrical materials are products being installed and/or replaced. These where the tools are
intended for.
Electrical installation and maintenance will not happen without the electrical tools and
materials for they are essential in this course.
