Outline
• Importance of ocean for human being
• The concept of the United Nations Decade
of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable
Development
• What does the Ocean Decade aim to
achieve?
• Conclusion
Importance of the ocean
• Human health and well-being, including
sustainable and equitable economic
development, depend on the health and safety
of the world’s ocean
• The ocean provides food and supports the
livelihoods of over 3 billion people
• The ocean plays key role in the fight against
climate change

4
Importance of the ocean
• From an economic point of view, the ocean is of
monumental importance: In 2010, the ocean
economy generated over 30 million direct, full-
time jobs
• Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ocean’s
economic output had been predicted to reach
US$3 trillion by 2030..

5
The Threats to the Ocean

❑The ocean threatened. The multiple effects of

land and sea-based activities affect more
than 40% of the ocean surface.
❑Deoxygenation is creating ocean ‘dead
zones’ and harmful algal blooms are
generating significant risks for human health
and economies.

6
❑ We cannot manage what we do not
understand, and there is much about the
ocean that remains a mystery.

The concept of the United Nations Decade of

Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development

7
❑To date, only 19% of the ocean floor has
been mapped
❑there are vast swathes of the deep
ocean and Arctic and Polar regions
where we know virtually nothing about
species distribution, ecosystems, ocean
processes and stressors.

8
❑ At the beginning of the third millennium,
ocean science is largely competent for
diagnosing problems
❑ However, its ability to offer solutions of
direct relevance to sustainable
development requires a massive upgrade.

9
❑ The world needs a large-scale and adequately
resourced campaign of transformational ocean
science
❑ that will empower and engage stakeholders across
disciplines, geographies, generations and genders
❑ It must be of sufficiently long duration to deliver the
lasting change that is required,

10
❑ In 2016, the Intergovernmental
Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of
UNESCO initiated the concept for this
campaign
❑ In December 2017, these preparations
culminated in the proclamation by the
United Nations General Assembly at its
72nd session the United Nations Decade of
Ocean Sciences for Sustainable
Development (2021-2030)

What does the Ocean Decade aim to achieve?

• Mission
• Vision.

Vision and Mission of the decade

VISION MISSION
to catalyse transformative
the science we need for ocean science solutions for
the ocean we want sustainable development,
connecting people and our
ocean
What are the objectives of the United
Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences
OBJECTIVE

Identify the knowledge generate the data, Use the knowledge and
needed for sustainable information and understanding of the
development knowledge required to
achieve a comprehensive oceans obtained to
understanding of the deploy solutions for
oceans, their components sustainable
and interactions development
Outcome/ Ocean we want

1. A clean ocean where sources of pollution are identified and

reduced or removed
2. A healthy and resilient ocean where marine ecosystems are
understood, protected, restored and managed..
3. A productive ocean supporting sustainable food supply and a
sustainable ocean economy.
4. A predicted ocean where society understands and can
respond to changing ocean conditions.
Outcome/ Ocean we want

5. A safe ocean where life and livelihoods are protected from

ocean-related hazards
6-An accessible ocean with open and equitable access to data,
information and technology and innovation
7- An inspiring and engaging ocean where society understands
and values the ocean in relation to human well-being and
sustainable development
Conclusion
The UN decade of ocean science for sustainable
development will:
❑ Build scientific capacity
❑ Generate knowledge that will directly contribute
to the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development;
❑ Contribute to Implement and achieve many of
the ambitious goals of the 2030 Agenda
