BRIDGE MB 3 OVER JALAN RASAH

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The bridge is about 670m long with two deck of similar span configuration. The
width of the bridge is 7.5m featuring 1.60m overhang on each side.

The bridges have 2 concepts. For the span longer than 40m pre cast box girder
to be constructed by balanced cantilever bridges are adopted while U-beams
and slab are used for the other configuration.

There are 4 span arrangement used:

For Bridge A on the left side

a) Segmental box are 42m + 56m + 59m + 59m + 56m + 42m


b) Beam and slab (4 x 31.25m) + (3 x 38m )+ ( 2 x 38.0m + 33.6m)

For Bridge B on the right side

c) Segmental box are 39m + 50m + 59m + 59m + 56m + 42m


d) Beam and slab (4 x 35.08m) + (3 x 38m )+ ( 3 x 38.0m )

1.1 SEGMENTAL BOX

The superstructure is made up of a single box section with a diaphragm each


over the piers and abutments with 1.8m segment length. The spans are of
similar cross section, a pier table consisting of the diaphragm together with a
one segment on each side, a 300mm in-situ concrete stitch at the mid-span. The
precast segment length is 3.0m each.

The depth of the segments varies between 3.50m and 2.50m while the web
thickness varies between 500mm and 400mm.

1.2 PIERS

The pier height varies between 13m to 16.0m. The pier have 0 diameter of 3.0m
x 1.8m. The major axis thickness ie. bending for longitudinal load is 1.8m . The
piers have been designed as slender in both directions.

1.3.1 Beam And Slab Deck

For Bridge A, the span arrangement are 4 x 31.25m + 3.38m + 3 x 38m. For
Bridge B, the span arrangement are 4 x 35.08m + 3 x 38m + 3 x 38m.

In between the span arrangement, expansion joint is being placed.

In the above concept, a 2.2m depth U-beam, being post-tensioned are spaced at
2.75m apart. Each of the span configurations would have a continuous deck
that caters for live-load only. The continuity connection is also provided with
negative connection due to the effect of long term creep and shrinkage.

2.0 PIERS

The piers can be conveniently divided into 3 category:

i.e. Pier Type 1 - for slender twin columns pier with diameter of 1.6m
height between 13m to 19m

Pier Type 2 - for slender and short twin column pier with diameter of
1.5m.
Height varies between 4.5m and 13m

Pier Type 3 - 3 column pier of 1.5m diameter.


Height varies between 4.5m and 13.0m

Width of carriageway.

3.0 FOUNDATION

Foundation comprised of 1000mm bored pile with a design capacity of 4000 kN


and bending capacity of 1500 kNm maximum.

4.0 DESIGN CRITERIA

4.1 Serviceability Limit State (SLS).

The following aspects have been checked under SLS.

i) Cracking.

Prestressed concrete is classified into 2 categories, namely Class 1 and


Class 2. The allowable crackings due tensile stresses for the various
classes of Prestressed are as follows: -

Class 1 : Tensile stresses are permitted at transfer where 1 N/mm 2


is allowed solely due to prestress, dead load and
temporary erection load.

Class 2 : For Post-Tensioned member, the tensile stresses are not


greater than 0.36fci at transfer and 0.45fcu at service
condition.

Where :

fci = Characteristic Strength at Transfer


= 50 N/mm2

fcu = Characteristic Strength at Services


= 50 N/mm2

4.2 Ultimate Limit State (ULS).

The effect of creep and shrinkage of concrete, temperature difference and


differential settlement has not been considered at ULS, provided that these
effects have been included in the appropriate load combination to check the
stress limitation. The following Live Load has been considered: -

i) HA alone.

ii) HA with 45 unit HB.

4.3 Transverse Design.

For the design of transverse analysis of box section, 30 unit of Type HB loading
occupying at any transverse position in the carriageway or placed HA Loading in
one notional lane in combination with 30 units of Type HB loading placed in one
other notional lane has been considered for crack width checking, whereas 45
units of Type HB loading occupying any transverse position in the carriageway
or placed in one notional lane in combination with 30 units of Type HB loading
placed in one other notional lane has been considered for stress checking in
both SLS and ULS condition.

5.0 MATERIAL PROPERTIES

5.1 Concrete

fcu = 40 N/mm2 Sub-structure


= 50 N/mm2 Box Girder

fci = 50 N/mm2 at Transfer.

Unit weight = 25.0 kN/m3 Reinforced Concrete.


= 24.5 kN/m3 Prestressed Concrete.

Coefficient of,  = 1.0 x 10-5 / degrees centigrade Thermal

Creep Characteristic = Based on BS 5400:Part4:1990

Creep Coefficient = 2.5

Shrinkage Characteristic = Based on BS 5400:Part4:1990

Shrinkage Coefficient = 0.0004

5.2 Non-Prestressed Steel

Elastic Modulus, Es = 200 kN/mm2

5.3 Prestressing Strands.

7 wire low relaxation super strand to Euronorm 138-79 or BS 5896: 1980 with
the following properties has been used: -

Nominal diameter = 12.9 mm


Nominal steel area = 100 mm2
Nominal mass per m length = 0.785 kg/m
Characteristic Breaking Load, PN = 186 kN
Elastic Modulus, Es = 195 kN/mm2
Maximum Jacking Force = 80% of PN
(during stressing )

Maximum Tendon Force = 75% of PN


(after anchoring )

Coefficient of Tendon Friction,  = 0.25


Wobble Factor, K = 0.8 x 10-6
