Box Girder Design Brief
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The bridge is about 670m long with two deck of similar span configuration. The
width of the bridge is 7.5m featuring 1.60m overhang on each side.
The bridges have 2 concepts. For the span longer than 40m pre cast box girder
to be constructed by balanced cantilever bridges are adopted while U-beams
and slab are used for the other configuration.
The depth of the segments varies between 3.50m and 2.50m while the web
thickness varies between 500mm and 400mm.
1.2 PIERS
The pier height varies between 13m to 16.0m. The pier have 0 diameter of 3.0m
x 1.8m. The major axis thickness ie. bending for longitudinal load is 1.8m . The
piers have been designed as slender in both directions.

For Bridge A, the span arrangement are 4 x 31.25m + 3.38m + 3 x 38m. For
Bridge B, the span arrangement are 4 x 35.08m + 3 x 38m + 3 x 38m.
In the above concept, a 2.2m depth U-beam, being post-tensioned are spaced at
2.75m apart. Each of the span configurations would have a continuous deck
that caters for live-load only. The continuity connection is also provided with
negative connection due to the effect of long term creep and shrinkage.
2.0 PIERS
i.e. Pier Type 1 - for slender twin columns pier with diameter of 1.6m
height between 13m to 19m
Pier Type 2 - for slender and short twin column pier with diameter of
1.5m.
Height varies between 4.5m and 13m
Width of carriageway.

For the design of transverse analysis of box section, 30 unit of Type HB loading
occupying at any transverse position in the carriageway or placed HA Loading in
one notional lane in combination with 30 units of Type HB loading placed in one
other notional lane has been considered for crack width checking, whereas 45
units of Type HB loading occupying any transverse position in the carriageway
or placed in one notional lane in combination with 30 units of Type HB loading
placed in one other notional lane has been considered for stress checking in
both SLS and ULS condition.
