"सगळे जण रांगेत उभे रहा. आज आपण
बागेत जाणार आहोत," लैला मॅडमनं
वगात सां गतलं.

सगळ मुलं ग पा मारत, एकमेकांचे हात

ध न उभी रा हली. का ा मा एकट च
उभी होती.

सगळे बागेत जायला नघाले. चालता

चालता लैला मॅडमनं वचारलं, "सुरवंट
मोठा झा यावर याचं काय होतं, हे
कोणाला माहीत आहे का?"

का ाला उ र ठाऊक होतं. आपण

सांगावं का उ र? उ सुकतेनं त या
पोटात बाक-बुक झालं. सांगावं का आपण
उ र?

का ा आ ण तचं कुटुं ब त या गावातून
नुकतेच बंगळु ला राहायला आले होते.

तचे आई-बाबा एका बांधकामावर काम

करत होते. सगळे तथंच रहातही होते.
एखा ा अधवट बांधले या घरात राहणं
खूप कठ ण होतं. तथ या हवेला धुराचा
वास यायचा आ ण अखंड चालले या
वाहतुक या आवाजानं झोपेचं खोबरंच
हायचं. उं च उं च इमारती, इकडू न तकडं
वेगानं धावणा या गा ा आ ण सतत
कामात असलेले लोक, हे सगळं पा न
का ाला आपण वतः खूप छोटं
अस यासारखं वाटत असे.

का ाला शाळे त यायला लागून एकच आठवडा झाला होता. अजूनपयत ती वगात या कोणाशीच बोलली न हती. तचे उ चार ऐकून कोणी तची
थ ा केली असती तर? कवा याआधी ती कधीच, कुठ याच शाळे त गेली न हती, हणून तला कोणी चडवलं असतं तर?

मग का ानं एक खोलवर ास घेतला उ र सांगायला वर केला. इतका ग गाट असले या बंगळु शहरात, तनं ग प रा न कसं चालेल?

"सुरवंटं मोठे झा यावर यांची फुलपाखरं होतात," का ानं
सां गतलं.

"बरो बर!" लैला मॅडम हणा या.

"सुरवंट फ काही आठवडेच सुरवंट हणून राहतात," का ा पुढं

हणाली. "या काळात ते सारा वेळ खात राहतात."

"मग ते खूप मोठ होत असतील," तची वगमै ीण मेरी हणाली.

"हो ना, होतातच!"

"भरपूर पानं खा यावर, सुरवंट वत:भोवती कोष वणतात. मग

ते या कोषात रहातात. तथं ते वाढतात आ ण यांचं प पच
पालटतं," का ानं सां गतलं.

"अगद बरोबर," लैला मॅडम हणा या. "जवळपास दोन आठवडे सुरवंट असे कोषाम ये राहतात. नंतर बाहेर येतात ते फुलपाखरं होऊनच."

"अरे, आपण बागेत पोचलोसु ा!" मेरी हणाली.

समोरचं य पा न सा यांनी ासच
रोखला. सगळ बाग रंगी-बेरंगी
फुलपाखरांनी ग च भ न गेली होती!
नद या पा यासारखी नळ शार
फुलपाखरं. सूय काशासारखी सोनेरी-
पवळ फुलपाखरं. पकले या पपई या
रंगाची केशरी फुलपाखरं. चांद यांनी
चमचमणा या आकाशासारखी काळ -
पांढरी फुलपाखरं.

त या गावात का ाला हे सगळे रंग

बघायला मळायचे.

हे सगळं आठवून तचं मन आनंदानं नाचू

लागलं.

"फुलपाखरं दरवष हजारो मैल वास क न या बागेत येतात. इथं यांना खायला जा त अ न, चांगली हवा आ ण अंडी घाल यासाठ सुर त
जागा मळते," लैला मॅडम हणा या. " यां या या वासाला ’ थलांतर’ असं हणतात."

"फुलपाखरं इत या रवर पंख फडफडवत येतात. मग उडताना ती
दमत नाहीत का?" एक नं वचारलं.

"खूप जोराचा वारा असेल, तर यांना पंख हलवावेच लागत नाहीत," का ानं मा हती पुरवली.
"ती फ यांचे पंख पसरवतात आ ण वा यावर तरंगत राहतात."

"बापरे, भलतेच ध के बसत असतील यांना वासात," मेरी हळू च का ाला हणाली.

का ाला तचा बंगळु ला येतांनाचा बस
वास आठवला – सग या सामाना या
मधे बसून घुसमटू न केला होता तनं तो.
क येक तास ध के खात, इकडं- तकडं
कलंडत केलेला वास...

फुलपाखराला हवेत उडताना असंच वाटत

असेल का?

"फुलपाखरं जे हा थलांतर करतात, ते हा ती न ां या वाहा या
मागानं येतात. वाटे त ती न ां या काठावर उतरतात. तथं आप या
पायांनी ख नजं शोषून घेतात. हणजे फुलपाखरं च क चखलात,
डब यात पाय तवून अ न ं टपून घेत असतात," लैला मॅडमनं
सां गतलं.

"काय? ती चखलात पाय घालतात? कती म जा आहे," मेरी

हणाली.

मेरी आ ण का ा एकमेक कडे पा न हस या.

"मजाच खरी," का ा हणाली. "पण ह ली अशी पा याची डबक

असतात तरी कुठं !"

का ा या गावात कमधून काही माणसं येतात आ ण नद तून वाळू

उपसून घेऊन जातात. मग तथलं वातावरण अ धका धक तापत
जातं. पाऊस कमी कमी पडू लागतो. गे या वष तर नद अगद
कोरडीठाक पडली होती.

डब यात पाय बुडवायला फुलपाखरांना पुरेसं पाणीच न हतं.
का ा या कुटुं बाला शेतीसाठ सु ा पुरेसं पाणी मळालं नाही.
हणून तर ते सगळे बंगळु ला राहायला आले.

"का ा, तुला फुलपाखरांब ल बरीच मा हती आहे गं," लैला मॅडम हणा या.

"कारण मला फुलपाखरं आवडतात," का ा हणाली.

"तुला फुलपाखरं एवढ का गं आवडतात?" मेरीनं वचारलं.

फुलपाखरांबाबत आवडणारी अशी एखाद च गो कशी सांगणार?

" यां या शरीरावरचे ठपके कवा प े मला फार आवडतात. आप या लांब नाकानं फुलपाखरं
फुलांमधला रस शोषून घेतात. शवाय ती सगळ कडे परागकण पसरवतात. यामुळं सगळ कडं
फुलंच फुलं उगवतात," का ा हणाली.

"फुलपाखरं खूप रवर उडत जातात. पण वाटे त जथं कुठं थांबतात, तथं ती नवीन म जमवतात," का ा मेरीचा हात ध न हणाली, "ती
असतात छोटु शी, पण कती धीट असतात."

"अगद तु यासारखीच," लैला मॅडम हणा या.

का ा एकदम मनमोकळं हसली – जणू काही एखा ा फुलपाखरानं पसरलेले पंखच!

 हे क न बघा : फुलपाखरांसाठ व ांतीचा थांबा

भारतात फुलपाखरं वषातून दोनदा थलांतर करतात. अलीकडे न ा आ ण जंगलं न होत

अस यामुळं
फुलपाखरांचा वास दवस दवस कठ ण होत आहे. यांना वाटे त कुठं व ांतीसाठ जागाच
उरले या नाहीत. एव ा वासात यांना दमायला होतं.

आपण फुलपाखरांना मदत क शकतो. यां या व ांतीसाठ सुर त जागा नमाण क न,

यां या अ नपा याची आपण सोय क शकतो.

कसा तयार कराल व ांती थांबा:

१. उं च काठ असलेलं एक सपाट भांडं या. उदा. थाळ कवा

परात.

२. या भां ाला लाल, केशरी कवा पवळा रंग लावा. याचं कारण
फुलपाखरांना गडद रंग आवडतात.

३. या भां ात फुलपाखरां या आवडीचं खा ठे वा. हे अगद

सो पं आहे. चार कप पा यात एक कप साखर घालून याचं म ण
बनवा.

४. यात पकले या फळांचे तुकडे घाला. फुलपाखरांना केळ , आंबे,
पे , पपई, सं ी ही फळं य आहेत.

५. हे भांडं बाहेर अंगणात, बा कनीत कवा खडक या क ट्यावर

ठे वा.

६. दर २-३ दवसांनी भांडं व छ क न, पु हा यात सगळं खाणं

भ न ठे वा.

७. तु ही फुलझाडं लावलीत, तर आणखी जा त फुलपाखरं

आक षत होतील. फुलपाखरांना जरे नयम, डे लया, हबना,
सूयफुलं ही फुलं फार आवडतात. ही रोपं कुं ांम ये लावून
खडक त कवा ज मनीवर ठे वता येतील. यासाठ फारशी जागा
लागत नाही. ती ज मनीवरही ठे वता येतील. यासाठ ही फार जागा
लागत नाही.
