MATH WEEK 8

What is the difference between the perimeter and area of a shape?

The perimeter is the sum of all the side lengths of a shape. The area is the amount of two-dimensional space a shape
occupies.
To better understand these two concepts and their differences, let's look at an
example:
The black border is a fence, while green square is the grass.
The perimeter of this square is the length of fence or the black
line around. The area of this square is the amount of grass or the
green part.
Read and analyze the problem.

Anabelle prepared a table napkin that is 20 cm long and 15 cm wide. What is its perimeter? And what its area?

To find the perimeter, look at this illustration.

Perimeter can be solved using the formula: P= 2L + 2W
Solution P = 2L + 2W
= (2 x 20 cm) + (2 x 15 cm)
= 40 cm + 30 cm
= 70 cm
The perimeter of Anabelle’s table napkin is 70 cm.
To find the area, look at this illustration.
Area of the rectangle can be solve using formula:
A=lxw
Solution A = l x w
= 20 cm x 15 cm
= 300 sq. cm or 300 cm2
The area of Anabelle’s table napkin is 300 sq. cm or 300 cm2.
We use square unit, because we multiply two like unit, in our example we multiplied cm by cm, so the area will be
square cm.

Converting square centimeters to square meters is relatively easy. These example problems will show the best way
to convert cm2 to m2 and vice versa.

The conversion factor between cm2 to m2 is10,000 cm2 = 1 m2.

How do you get that? Start with the conversion from cm to m. 100 cm = 1 m

A square meter is a square 1 meter wide and 1 meter tall. 1 m2 = 1 m x 1 m

Substitute the conversion factor for meter to centimeter

1 m2 = (100 cm) x (100 cm)

1 m2 = 10,000 cm2
Learning Task 1: Find the perimeter and area of each figure.

Learning Task 2: Convert the following. Remember: 1 m2 = 10 000 cm2.

1. 40 000 cm2 = _____________m2 6. 56 000 cm2 = _____________m2

2. 6 m2 = _____________cm2 7. 65 m2 = _____________cm2

3. 80 000 cm2 = _____________m2 8. 450 000 cm2 = _____________m2

4. 120 000 cm2 = _____________m2 9. 23 m2 = _____________cm2

5. 9 m2 = _____________cm2 10. 240 000 cm2 = _____________m2

Learning Task 4: Change the following units as indicated.

1. 230 000 cm2 _______________________________ m2

2. 70 000 cm2 _______________________________ m2

3. 90 000 cm2 _______________________________ m2
