What is the abstract of the This study examines the role of work experience and education in ethical perception
study? of Malaysian journalists
What type of material? The material use to present the ideas are through survey form.
What are the key For better undrestanding regarding to journalism ethics in Malayisa some qualitative
findings? research need to be done to find out the obstacles of applying journalism ethics in
real situations by interviewing academics and journalists. Meanwhile, media system
and structure is very important factor in practicing journalism ethics in this Asian
country. According to Banerjee (2002) it is only in a liberal democratic society where
media have some amount of independence, that one can expect media practitioners
and journalists to uphold professional standards and ethics. In other words, a
journalist operating in an environment with strict media control cannot be judged for
his ethical practices. Hence, he cannot be expected to sacrifice everything, including
his life, for the sake of moral and ethical beliefs.
What are the conclusions Results show that there is big numbers of journalists (more than half of the
and recommendations? respondents) who have unfavorable attitude towards journalism codes of ethics. They
beilieve that journalism codes of ethics do not d ecrease the journalist’smistakes
effectively, and can not beformulated in a certain canon or principals. Meanwhile
majority of them think journalists can use any method or technique to obtain news if
it is essentially important for public including unfair methods like hidden camera and
hidden voice recorder. However, the results shows, there is no significant
difference between ethical perception of journalists who studied journalism/ media
and those who did not. While there is a significant correlation between journalists’
ethical perceptionand their work experince; the more experience they have, the more
favorable perception they have regarding to journalism codes of ethics

What is the abstract of In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, journalists have the challenging

position in the COVID-19 communication ecology. Journalists
saw the pandemic as laying bare the endangered nature of
journalism, which was a result of pressure from access to
sources as well as market forces. This jeopardized journalists’
ability to fulfill their responsibility to society
What are the conclusions There are several conversations that require further investigation and
and recommendations? attention moving forward. The pandemic is still in process and journalists are
still dealing with the daily challenges of the crisis. At the time of writing,
there is not an end in sight to the pandemic, despite the early arrival of
vaccines, and certainly no end in sight for the effects of the pandemic on the
media industry, journalism, and journalists. The COVID-19 communication
ecology provides a place to dissect the ways in which journalists do their
work and also think about their work; perhaps the journalism industry will
become more flexible or change to adapt to the current and future ecology.
What is the metholodogy This study applies a two-step qualitative methodology. In the first step, interviews were

press database was created by using a web scraper to download and archive articles and posts
from 25 sites where journalists discuss journalism. This includes sites such as Editor &
Publisher, MediaShift, NiemanLab, and the Columbia Journalism Review. The purpose of the
database was more to choose sites that represented institutional discourse and provide less
attention to sites at goal. The database compiled 83 articles that matched the keyword

What is the abstract of the This study examines how journalists in the Philippines perceive their roles in
study? response to mis- and disinformation. In the country’s current media
landscape, journalists find themselves in the spotlight as the media are
frequently accused of spreading falsehoods. Drawing from data gathered
through 16 semi structured in-depth interviews with Filipino journalists, the
findings first of all indicate that the disseminator and watchdog roles are
perceived as more important and that journalists see themselves as truth
crusaders and advocates of societal reform. Second, journalists identify
barriers on different levels of influence that impede the performance of these
intended roles. Finally, journalists see the rise of mis- and disinformation as
both a challenge and opportunity for journalism to improve as a practice and
institution. These findings can be extrapolated to theoretical and practical
implications for journalism and democracy in general.
What type of material? The material used to present the ideas are through the use of , table and interview
What are the key This corrective role of the media against mis- and disinformation has
findings? become so salient that some journalists admit that debunking fake news
can be used as consideration for judging the news value of a story.
What are the conclusions The Philippine media are currently undergoing an important transition in
and recommendations? history where journalism is challenged by changing news consumption
patterns, technology, and criticisms that threaten its authority. Mis- and
disinformation are at the center of this battle – and falsehoods may
potentially be used for propaganda (Jackson, 2017). In this fragmented
media environment, this study aimed to provide an in-depth analysis of the
role perceptions and performances of Filipino journalists in response to mis-
and disinformation.
What is the metholodogy This study is based on 16 semi structured interviews (see Appendix 2 for
used? (research design, interview guide), which were analyzed using the step-by-step coding

Sampling Using purposive and snowball sampling, a total of 16 semi
structured interviews were conducted via Skype and Facebook Video Chat.
The duration of each interview ranged from 45minutes to 1 hour and
40minutes (see Appendix 1 for list of interviewees). The interviewees were
selected based on the researcher’s initial contact list. The researcher asked
for referrals as the data collection progressed.

compensation for multi platform productions and the legitimacy of media

What type of material? The material used to present the ideas are through the use of , table
What are the key After two weeks of online data collection in November 2002, we received 160

Singletary notes, returns of 30% to 40% are common in mail surveys (1994: 148).
The response rates of this online survey
seem typical. However, the response rates were still comparatively low. A response
bias was potentially present. Many survey participants (41%) gave textual answers
to elaborate upon their responses to the close-ended questions.
What are the conclusions As an experimental industrial trend, media convergence in the sense of media

kind of maturity is yet to be seen. Media convergence, however, initiated and made
possible by digital technology, is more than media mergers propelled largely by

What is the abstract In this review, we analyze the role of mass media and public health
of the study? communications from December 31, 2019 to July 15, 2020, and make scientific
inferences. The COVID-19 pandemic highlights multiple social, cultural, and
economic issues arising from the media’s arguable role. The racial prejudices
linked to the origin of the virus prevented collaborations among scientists to find
a solution. Media coverage of coronavirus news during geographical lockdowns,
extended quarantines, and financial and social hardships induced fear and
caused psychological stress.Mass media has an imperative role in today’s world
and it can provide a unified platform for all public health communications,
comprehensive healthcare education guidelines, and robust social distancing
strategies while still maintaining social connections. It can enable equal access
to healthcare, end discrimination, and social stigmatization. The role of media
and public health communications must be understood and explored further as
they will be an essential tool for combating COVID-19 and future outbreaks.
What type of the material used to present the ideas are through the use of a graphical
material? representation mainly the bar graph and line graph to show the new COVID-19
cases from the first 28th week of 2020 and the representation of social media

What are the key Media became the platform for spreading prejudice among people by spreading
findings? stories about the origin of the virus. Racial and socioeconomic discrimination
became apparent during the quarantine. Inaccessibility to equal healthcare made
the situation worse. Under such unprecedented circumstances, the media has the
potential to unite people and end discrimination by spreading awareness. It can
also be an excellent resource for information verification. However, this can
only be possible through the responsible use of media where proper checks and
balances are in place. This way, it can help prevent the spread of rumors and end
stigmatization of those affected by COVID-19.
What are the . In this article, we discussed the positive and negative impacts of media and
conclusions and proposed steps that can be taken to use media effectively in outbreaks.

What are the key findings? The current structure of dialogue and media privileges extreme and provocative content,
which tends to polarize society and to make it more difficult to come to consensus on social
issues. Discourse that is more cooperative and creative enables constructive responses to be
adopted society-wide to pressing issues of the day, including but not limited to equity,
environment, prejudice and policing. With common communications protocols, solutions to
pressing issues will begin to emerge. Common protocols also enable greater security, through
such mechanisms of zero-knowledge proofs, for example. This allows better insight into the
effectiveness of social programs and enables governments and critics to evaluate innovation
on more than merely financial or economic criteria.

What is the abstract of the Having been neglected by journalism scholars in the past, recent years have seen renewed
study? interest in journalism’s role in everyday life, in addition to the traditional focus on journalism’s
relationship with politics. In particular, a growing body of work is concerned with the practices,
content and distribution of lifestyle journalism. Yet, there are still large gaps in our knowledge
of the field in terms of how lifestyle journalists themselves think about their work and their role
in society. Based on an online survey of more than 600 Australian lifestyle journalists, this
article identifies four key roles that these journalists see themselves as fulfilling: service
providers, life coaches, community advocates and inspiring entertainers. These dimensions tie
into recent theorizations about journalistic roles and everyday life, and not only enhance our
understanding of lifestyle journalism, but more importantly contribute to a better recognition of
journalism’s role in society. Further, the article explores some key determinants for differences
in the way journalists value the four roles, identifying economic aspects on the organizational
level, as well as specializations within lifestyle journalism as key areas of influence.
What type of material?
What are the key findings? Perceptions,Lifestyle Journalist
What are the conclusions This study also contributes to the wider research on journalistic roles by outlining some key
and recommendations? considerations and specific roles for such research to take into account. As a number of scholars
have noted in recent years, a disproportionate amount of scholarship is focused on journalism’s
roles in political life, which has to some degree resulted in a narrow vision of what journalism
is (see, e.g. Hanitzsch and Vos 2016; Josephi 2013; Zelizer 2013). Scholarship that goes
beyond such narrow definitions of journalism can therefore contribute to a more
comprehensive, even holistic, understanding of journalism today. As noted earlier, this is
crucial given the economic and cultural importance of areas such as lifestyle journalism in the
media ecology today. In particular, the research presented here may contribute to an improved
understanding of journalism’s citizen and consumer orientations, which have in the past been
seen as incompatible. Recent developments, however, have shown that journalists may
increasingly see a need to combine such approaches in communicating news to audiences.
Hence, scholarship on the roles of lifestyle journalism should not be seen as a separate strand of
its own, but rather integral to broadening our horizons about the range of facets that exist in
journalism.
What is the methodology To examine the research questions, a comprehensive online survey of Australian lifestyle
used? journalists was conducted between 19 April and 30 June 2016. Lifestyle journalists were
(research design, sampling defined as anyone who had some editorial responsibility over the production of lifestyle
and participants, data content—a definition guided by one typically used for mainstream journalists (Weaver and
gathering and analysis Wilhoit 1986). In recognition of the varying practical realities in the field discussed earlier, as
procedure) well as the shifting boundaries of what constitutes journalism in the digital age (Carlson and
Lewis 2015), the definition applied here includes journalists employed in established media,
such as newspapers, magazines, broadcast or websites, as well as freelancers and independent
bloggers. Freelancers were considered important to survey due to the ongoing precarization of
journalistic labour (Elefante and Deuze 2012), particularly in a field such as lifestyle journalism
which is arguably more susceptible to economic influences than news journalism (Hanusch
2012b). Much like in news journalism, bloggers have also had an important impact on lifestyle
journalism (Pirolli 2014), which made it necessary to include this group.

Respondents for the survey were drawn from a publicly available database (AAP MediaNet),
using search criteria specific to the lifestyle journalism beats noted earlier. An extensive search
of the database resulted in a list of 5314 email accounts. These accounts were first contacted via
an email invitation on 19 April 2016, with four reminder emails sent over the ensuing 10
weeks. A total of 458 emails were undeliverable, with respondents either no longer working at
the address or out of the office during the research time-frame. By the end of the study
time-frame on 30 June 2016, a total of 751 responses had been received, of which 616 were

completed sufficiently to warrant inclusion in the analysis. This constitutes a response rate of
12.7 per cent, which is low, but, when compared with previous online survey studies of
journalists (Vu 2013; Wigley and Meirick 2008), can be considered acceptable.

What is the abstract of the Journalism is a long-established profession prevalent in society in the vast majority of the world.
study? The rise of social media over the last ten years has seen a significant influence on the way in
which news is reported and digested by all parties within journalism, with traditional journalists
taking on a developed role utilising social media as both a way to deliver and to promote their
work.
Several studies have been conducted on what the rise of social media does to journalism, and
from the perspective of various positions within the industry. However, there has been little
in-depth qualitative research into what journalists themselves actually feel about their
professional interaction with social media.
This study investigates the journalists perspective on the impact social media has had on their
profession, and on how they perform their role. A series of interviews conducted with journalists
also look at the participant’s beliefs about the change in audience interaction.
Interactivity with the audience, and the rise of the citizen journalist, as well as the
journalist’s preferences for working with social media, are all investigated and implemented as
part of the study. In conclusion, the paper validates that social media has drastically altered
journalism as it once was, with contrasting beliefs on whether it has interfered with or advanced
the profession.

What are the conclusions and The data obtained and subsequent data analysis certainly emphasise the fact that social media has
recommendations? had, and continues to have a strong influence on the field of journalism. Interactivity with the
audience and potential sources has led the journalist away from merely being a reporter of news.
In fact, the notion of the journalist has moved so significantly away from aspects of its
traditional basis through these influences that it could be said to be a different role altogether in
today’s social media age. They now have a responsibility to pursue stories quicker, strengthen
networks, encourage sharing of articles, and respond to their readers, and because of the nature
of social media, they are expected to do this in near real-time. As citizen journalists gain more
power and influence in online media and as an outlet for news, one can only wonder what will
happen to the journalist and their publications in the future. The audience has gone from merely
being a feedback-giving element of news transmission to being a broadcaster in their own right.
Online journalism has already affected the local news scene with many local papers unable to
afford to continue printing, and the fear is now that larger scale publications will diminish or
become exclusively available online. With this move it is very likely that there will be an even
greater shift away from the traditional role of journalism towards that of a social media writer.
Though the number of interviews compiled were of sufficient number to validate the study, it is
likely that more data, of a more varied demographic of journalist, or a study into several highly
established journalists, would deliver stronger data. Unfortunately, news reporting is such a
breakneck industry as to leave little time for such requests, so stronger contacts may be
necessary to pursue such an enquiry. The industry seems to be moving away from traditional
aspects of journalism with increasing fervor. As the next generation of journalists come through
there will be an even greater capability to exploit social media in order to report news and to
market and distribute it. As those familiar to the traditional aspects of it leave the industry there
is potentially nothing to stop a move to championing speed and coverage of report over quality
of message.\

What is the abstract of the To understand this process in the field of journalism, we unpacked discourses concerning the
study? coronavirus pandemic collected from interviews with journalists during the pandemic and from
the U.S. journalism trade press using the Discourses of Journalism Database. Through discourse
analysis, we discovered that during COVID-19 journalists discursively placed themselves in a
responsible but vulnerable position within the communication ecology—not solely as a result of
the pandemic but also from environmental conditions that long preceded it. Journalists found
their reporting difficult during the pandemic and sought to mitigate the forces challenging their
work as they sought to reverse the flow of misinformation.
What type of material? Survey form
What are the key findings? Journalists’ attempt to be proactive and innovative appears to be a way of coping with this lack
of consistent and clear information. However, their flexibility and innovation is overshadowed
by the limited resources journalists already had pre pandemic. Perhaps the pandemic conditions
only confirm that these hurdles are real and have been destroying the process of journalism in a

What are the conclusions There are several conversations that require further investigation and attention moving forward.
and recommendations? The pandemic is still in process and journalists are still dealing with the daily challenges of the
crisis. At the time of writing, there is not an end in sight to the pandemic, despite the early
arrival of vaccines, and certainly no end in sight for the effects of the pandemic on the media
industry, journalism, and journalists. The COVID-19 communication ecology provides a place
to dissect the ways in which journalists do their work and also think about their work; perhaps
the journalism industry will become more flexible or change to adapt to the current and future
ecology. The disaster communication ecology requires journalists to maintain consistency and
adapt to the changing expectations of the public while mitigating personal convictions and
concerns around the virus. The needs that journalism satisfies in a crisis are at odds with
practices of journalism itself, but perhaps the metadiscourse provides the very antidote for how
journalists best mitigate the crisis and stay anchored within the norms and ethics of the
profession

Journalism. The first survey (n = 252), focused on students’ perception of fake news, the
second (n = 300) aims at finding out the type of content they had received during the
recent confinement caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Results show that most of the
students prefer online media as a primary source of information instead of social media.
Students consider that politics is the main topic of fake news, which, according to the
respondents, are mainly distributed by adult users through social networks. The vast
majority believe that fake news are created for political interests and a quarter of the
sample considers that there is a strong ideological component behind disinformation
strategies. Nonetheless, the study also reveals that students do not trust in their ability to
distinguish between truthful and false information. For this reason, this research
concludes, among other aspects, that the promotion of initiatives and research to promote
media literacy and news literacy are decisive in the training of university students.

they do use social networks for getting information. However, when asked about their
favourite sources of information, more than 67% prefer online newspapers.

What is the abstract of the This study explores the educational and post-graduation experiences of
study? graduates of a master's program with a focus on environmental journalism.
The study uses the framework of knowledge-based journalism to
qualitatively examine how the competencies of journalistic skills, general
and content-specific knowledge, learning communication theory, and
developing journalistic values allowed graduates to develop a niche in their
professional careers. Results show respondents placed disproportionate
emphasis on the importance of journalistic skills and were ambivalent about
the value of theory courses. The responses suggest scholars' idealistic
conception of knowledge-based journalism is problematic when applied to
the changing realities of journalism and the media industry in the U.S.

findings? important for respondents. Subject knowledge and communication
theory—arguably the most “knowledge”-focused components of Donsbach's
model—emerged only when prompted by the interviewers. In addition to the
competencies, four additional themes emerged from the
data. Thoroughness in the reporting of science-based issues, interpersonal
skills for professional development, and adaptability to a changing media
and work environments were discussed by respondents as key competencies
that are needed in today's environmental journalist's toolbox.
Finally, academic vs. professional tension in students' perspective about
program requirements was identified as an emergent theme.
