Course Description
FND 101 course assumes a pre-intermediate level of general language proficiency. It introduces and gives
practice in the four language areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing through Q:Skills for Success1-
Second Edition. The course integrates grammar, vocabulary acquisition and critical thinking in order to
maximize skills and practice. The objectives and outcomes, are aligned with those stipulated by the OAAA in
the “Oman Academic Standards for General Foundation Programs” (2009). The course deals with both general
and academic aspects of language use including structures and discourse common in English. The course book
enables the students to develop the skills they need to succeed in their future academic and professional careers.
It also helps them to collaborate, innovate, adapt, be self-directed, be flexible, be creative, be tech-literate, and
be accountable-both individually and in groups. Grammar is further supplemented through Macmillan English
Grammar In context- Intermediate. It provides revision, practice and extension of the most commonly used
grammatical structures required for the students’ academic and occupational purposes. In the Writing module
two additional chapters from Ready to Write-2 are included to enhance and fill the gap of transition from Level
1 to Level 2. Confidence to use the right words in appropriate time and place is enhanced through English
Vocabulary in Use. The course also provides students with additional specific language skills, in medical word
building. Study skills and independent learning habits are also emphasized mainly through the use of the,
Introductory Units1, Comprehensive Reading (health) and Extensive Readers. During the course, general
English and medical vocabulary will be reinforced through the use of Computer Assisted Language Learning
(CALL). In addition to homework tasks, self-study assignments and online activities will provide additional
support in vocabulary, pronunciation, listening, reading and writing and inculcate independent study habits. The

Reading Module & Writing Module (10 hrs/wk)

Reading and writing practice is given via the textbook Q: Skills for Success (1). The Reading
module develops reading and vocabulary skills through the eight prescribed units. Students acquire
reading strategies such as identifying topics, previewing texts, skimming for the main idea, reading
charts, graphs and tables, identifying the topic sentence , supporting sentences, details and concluding
sentence in a paragraph, identifying pronoun referents, marking the margins and identifying facts and
opinions. Through the various text passages the students build their reading fluency.

In the Writing module learners practice writing answers to questions in complete sentences and
writing descriptive/narrative/ informative / opinion paragraph(s). The eight units also give practice in
planning, making outlines, brain storming, using visuals and T-charts to generate ideas, and using
timelines and mind-maps to organize ideas. Skills such as revising, editing and rewriting, giving
feedback to peers, self-evaluating and writing with the appropriate connectors are also focused.
Students learn vocabulary to answer the unit question; consider new information related to the unit’s
theme that utilizes this vocabulary; use this information to think critically about new questions and
use those answers to practice the new reading, vocabulary, grammar and writing skills that they need
to achieve the unit’s learning outcome. The first 2 units focus on writing a paragraph with a topic
sentence and few supporting sentences. From unit 3 to unit 7 the focus is on writing a structured
paragraph with a topic sentence, supporting sentences and a concluding sentence. Unit 8 focusses on
writing one or more paragraphs. In the beginning the focus is writing around 120 words. By the end
of the trimester the students are expected to write about 150 words. Two additional chapters (Letter
Writing and Summary Writing) from Ready to Write-2 are included to bridge the transitional gap
from Level 1 to Level 2. Extra exercises are also given for additional practice in Summary writing.

10 hours are allotted to improve the students’ general writing and reading skills through Q: Skills for
Success 1. The book focuses on the basic principles of organization skills in English Writing and
develops reading and vocabulary skills. In the Writing module two additional chapters (Summary
Writing & Letter Writing) from Ready to Write-2 are included bridge the transitional gap from Level
1 to Level 2.

In Oxford Q: Skills for Success (1) the critical thinking journey begins with an essential question that
is woven throughout each unit. The Q Unit question at the beginning of each unit activates prior
knowledge about a new unit theme, provides opportunities for students to apply content knowledge,
grammar structures and vocabulary and encourages students to share their reflections with their
classmates and comment on each other’s work. The video clips featured in Q: Skills for Success
includes idioms and expressions that are common in everyday conversation. Communicative
grammar activities and integrated learning are the highlights of the course book
